Thread Starter | New barn studio build
Just bought a house with a two story barn I'll be turning into a studio over the next six months or so, thought ide keep a photo journal of the progress here. More for myself but of course comments and suggestions are more then welcome. Here's a picture of the room I have to work with, long way to go

Thanks! Its on the second floor of a old barn with a really nice deck. Should be a awesome space to work in! Not sure if I want to split the space in half and do a tracking room and a mixing room or just make it one big open room (got a small ISO closet for guitar amps framed out already) I'll snap a few more pics tomorrow

Looks like a cool space, fun project!
Where are you located? I would think hot summers, harsh winter, rain, etc would be considerations when thinking about heating, cooling, insulation, etc.

Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Gearslutz App | Well it depends on a few things.
How much you are going to insulate.
How much gear, and what gear you have. (Gear generates heat)
The number of people that will be in the space.
The volume of the space.
You'll have to run a few formulas to calculate the heat generated, cooling required, and air flow required.
Have you read this book? I would definitely recommend it, its only a few dollars and it'll save you lots of trouble in the long run: Amazon.com: Home Recording Studio: Build It Like the Pros (9781435457171): Rod Gervais: Books

Thanks I'll have to check that book out! I have quite a bit of construction experience (what I do for a living) but something like that certainly can't hurt! Rock wool insulation and 5/8 sheetrock most likely. I'm I'm Pennsylvania so hot summers and cold winters more worried about the instruments then anything, temperature humidity etc.

Yes, that book should be absolutely compulsory reading before spending a cent or lifting a finger. If you do construction for a living it'll probably be the perfect level for you.
The author is an active user here (and elsewhere) too

What an awesome space!
I have always dreamed of a barn studio. I can't wait to see what you do with it.
Question: you say this is the second floor, what are you doing with the bottom floor?

Depending on how much weight you add, you may have to check that the structure can take it too. then again, since you are in a barn, you may not have neighbours, so you may not need to sound proof so much, so you may not need to add a lot of weight..

A new cement slab was poured about 5 years ago and a bunch of new support beams added but I'm still going to have a architect look it over before any heavy building. Downstairs will be my work shop I have a small boutique music company I build microphones and guitar pedals and stuff. And also a work shop for the Harley

Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Gearslutz App | Wow, sounds like quite the set up. Any pictures of the landscape outside?
Another thing I was thinking. The glass in the windows will have to be of the same mass as the walls, otherwise "soundproofed" walls wont be soundproof at all.

Yea I'm not sure what to do with the windows. Two in the back Im Going to frame out and get rid of. Ide like to keep the 2 on each side so at least I can open them on nice days. They are almost brand new replacement windows, far from sound proof. Right now the front door off the deck is a big sliding glass door, I think I'm going to remove that and frame it out for a storm door for security purposes.
I'll try and get some mire pictures of the space up tonight if its not raining.
Behind the barn is a big furniture store storage garage but they're are neighbors probably about 50 yards away on each side

That's a great idea I was thinking something along those lines too something that's easy to set up and take down and still looks decent. Got a few ideas Quote:

Lovely looking space!
I'd start with the controlroom,
Really nice to have the
natural light coming in from behind if you're sitting
by the mixing console...
Good luck!

A couple more pictures, its dark out so only some temporary barn lighting
A view of the down stairs you can kind of see the new support beams
And a couple more shots of upstairs and the little framed out ISO booth

Unfortunately been super busy really haven't gotten much done. Starting to get building supplies together and gear up to start working on it next month. In the mean time I set up a spare bedroom in my house as a mix room for projects until the barns done. Heres a few pictures of that build. Building the desk foe the studio this afternoon.

For the HVAV system you can think of a line duct distributing system with dispersion diffusers since the space is large and long.
