Monitors and Earthquakes!

Guys,
This is a bit of a strange question but where I live in Christchurch New Zealand we have had 9500 earthquakes in the last year or so.
Some of these are monstors, one killed alot of people, and they are still going on an on, and my little studio has taken a couple of real bad hits.
The main problem I have in my monitors and Imac go flying from the top of the console meter bridge!.
The monitors are sitting on auralex pads, the imac on the meter bridge, anyone got any ideas to secure them so they don't fly around but still are "floating" on the auralex pads!!
Not your usual build question I know!
Any ideas would be great!
We just had another quake while I was typing, magnitude 5!!

This is the photos of studio builds forum so I think you are in the wrong place (I'm sure a mod will be right along to move it) but, jeez! That sounds miserable! Have you considered just moving somewhere else?

If not, I guess you could do some kind of suspension system like you might for isolating mains. Would seem overkill for nearfields though. You'll need a good acoustician/designer to deal with something like this for you. I would thoroughly recommend Thomas at Northward Acoustics if you decided to go in that direction (pm me if you want his contact details).

Best of luck!

Treat the problem the same way that live sound guys handle their flying rigs: use safety cables. The cable should be loose enough that the monitors (audio or video) are not confused about which way the force of gravity is trying to pull them in normal conditions, but should be tight enough that if they are knocked off the bridge they won't fall far.

Send a message via ICQ to muziekschuur
There are brackets to hang your monitors, maybe another way to go about. You see that often in broadcast invironments...

All of the above suggestions have merit. Alternatively you could consider flush mounting your monitors, which would solve the problem and at the same time probably improve their performance.

My feeling is your first priority is to look at the practicalities of securing your equipment and issues such as optimising the function of your Mopads is down the list.

Regarding the CHCH earthquakes, I am still shocked and saddened by what has happened to imo, NZ’s most beautiful city and despair as to what the future may hold for it? It is an ongoing catastrophe of truly tragic proportions. My thoughts are with you all.
