Hideout Recording Studio

Sharing the backstory on design and build of the newly opened Hideout Recording Studio in Vegas. I designed this private shop commercial facility for Kevin Churko and his son Kane. The first release, the new Five Finger Death Punch, charted at #3 first week. Kevin is thrilled and that makes me very happy.

Kevin was a great client in regards to knowing what he wanted. He's obviously been in scores of great studios around the world. This made the design goals easy to identify. The studio was built by Kim Barnett of The Pillar Group.

I will first share the floorplan, then some construction pics and finally finished photos.

If anyone is curious, feel free to check out their Facebook page.

Program

The program for this facility includes:
Entry/lounge
Control Room A (Kevin's)
Control Room B (Kane's)
Joint Use Booth
Tech/Aux tracking room
Machine Room
Bath

The neighboring space is an open warehouse with tie-lines for various tracking uses: drums, full band, etc.

Finished photos

These are the professional photos of the final results. The whole process occurred within the past 18 months.

For the curious:
- discovery conversations took ~3 months
- Design/Blueprints ~ 3months
- Revisions/Permits ~ 5 months
- Build ~ 4 months

~1,200 man hours for the build
~100 man hours for wiring integration which was flawlessly executed by the very cool Zack Fagan of Under The Wire (located in LA)

some measurements

One major design priority was to have a very even spatial response in Kevin's room at mix and client locations. The Spectrograms show the results. Part of the reason is the rear wall of the CR is a dual-function trapping system and storage closets. Additionally the soffits that wrap the side and rear walls are very much a part of the consistent and tight LF response. Also, the construction systems which employ various mass layers, Green Glue and isolation hangers.
