Hi, the console was one of Decca's main location recording consoles throughout the 60s. It was used on classical sessions for people like Pavarotti, violinist Itzhak Perlman and pianist Vladiir Ashkenazy.

It's all valve and comes with two additional racks of mic amps (that sit out on the studio floor).

As with all consoles of that period, it was designed and built in-house so it's pretty unique.

I'll post some more info and pics of the restoration (which took nearly three years) later this week.

oak drums....cool!

Still, looks amazing. The view out of those windows is very, very British. Could see myself sitting listening to Nick Drake all day with a view like that...

All the guys are really, really great craftsmen. We're very fortunate to have Stuart (who's running the job) and Kevin (the studio designer)...both of them keep in touch so if there is anything that's unusual, it normally gets picked up before it gets built...

Yep, it's the cleanest site I've been to!
And yes... I owe them many, many beers (I'm fairly certain they'd agree )

Can't wait to see that staircase installed. That's really going to add a great design element (as well as being functional). This could be one of my favorite builds ever . . .

Wow!

Sheer beauty! Really inspiring.

One question though (and please excuse my ignorance), are those boxes with holes in the control room walls Helmholtz resonators?
If so how did you know the exact frequency when the building wasn't even begun?

Again, amazing vibe.

Wish you best of luck with the studio,

Hey Mike! It's great to see your place coming together. I've read every single studio construction thread on GS and yours is at the top of my personal favorites list because all of the key elements are so close to how I'd envision my own dream studio - the size, shape, architecture (I've built post and beam myself), the whole ball of wax. You've done an awesome job. I'm sure there are a billion details that need your attention as you try to finish everything off. Good luck getting the truly important stuff done right so that the studio can work for you as best possible. It's great to see spaces like this that have inherent beauty and artistic vibe. Next time I'm across the pond, I'll be ringing you up for a tour!

Thanks to everyone who's posted comments. Not much spare time the last week or so to post a proper update...

In the meantime, here are some photos from last week.

A couple of photos of the oak staircase up to the lounge and machine room

The view from the top

The air con duct work in the booth - bigger than we all expected, but I love the industrial look :-)

Just a few more photos :-)

We moved all the big equipment today (tape machines, reverb plate, mixing consoles etc).

The old studio is up 2 very tight flights of stairs....and we had snow!

:-)

Thanks to Petra for the photos!

230kg of analogue 2" heaven!

Goodbye to the old control room

EMT

and finally, a photo of some lights and wheels in the new control room ;-)

Just wanted to add - if you're in the UK or Europe and need a studio move doing properly, Pulleyns removals are fantastic! They even do symphony orchestras! Cheers to Mike Banks for the recommendation.

Scott Pulleyn arranged everything and his team are wonderful (and funny!)

Thanks to Stuart too for making everything go smoothly at our end :-)...especially the A80!

Did you tape the plate to the frame? I've seen alot of people online ruining their plates by snapping a spring while moving.

That's what we call good workflow, no need to put all the effort into slamming your head against the wall.

Stunning!
I'm loving the woodwork.
I'd love to see it in the flesh some day!

Congrats to you for undertaking a laborious project in these so called "dull" times...

Best of luck!

Thanks again to everyone that's taken time to reply to the thread...haven't made time this week to post any replies...but...here are a few more photos!

First up, here's Steve, the brilliant decorator we have. Just prior to sealing the floor.

And... after sealing

More progress in the control room. The floor is finished and equipment racks are installed

If you found a big ol wooden cross from a church in town it would make a great decoration in the live room. Even if its not your thing there is probably a great buck to be made in the christian music biz.

Thanks for your interest - sorry for being slow getting back.

No it's not a private studio. We're in a tiny village in Kent. I'd rather leave the exact location vague until we're finished with the build...hope you understand.

Cheers
I really hope I can get to record in there one day, like others have said, it's not far from my own dream studio. It's looking amazing!
