Home recording studio - Norway

Hello fellow slutz!

First of all, pardon my English language. I know that it's not perfect.

Thought I should share a bit of what I've done recently in my house.
I'm trying to build myself a small one-room studio.
My goal is to raise the STC rating of the isolation, to make my playing, jamming and recording more friendly to both my girlfriend and neighboors.
The room was previously a bedroom / office.

A littlebit of pictures in the building progress

Old gypsum is being removed from the wall. as you can see, no isolation is under the walls.. the stc rating is about 20 if even that...

Floor over floor is being mounted (2x2")

Floor is being isolated, and U-boat floaters is placed under the 2x2's.

1st layer of 22mm MDF

MDF caulked and sealed

two layers of gypsum over MDF. Caulked and sealed.

YAY! my new saw has arrived!

My Live keyboard rig. Kurzweil PC3x, Clavia Nord electro 2, Moog Minimoog Voyager, Access Virus TI, Alesis Andromeda A6.

Walls isolated

1st attempt to install rc8... the wrong way, has been corrected now.

My girlfriends contribution to "blood, sweat and tears".. Autch..

Winter reaches the cold north.. My house is to the left... Mr.plowman desides to put all the snow into my yard.. great!

nothing else to do, than eating some chili-butter marinaded lobsters while we wait for the snow to disappair.

The snow finally disappairs, and my new swedish-built tanks arrives!
(volvo V50 R-design for those who wondered)

Now well.. back to work!

Gypsum installed on walls.

1st layer gypsum

still 1st layer gypsum. Old door has been removed, and new 40dB Sound-door is going to be installed.

What's next?
Roof gypsum + lighting.

What lights to choose...?
I want something that doesn't leak to much sound out of big holes in the roof (example: downlights..)

hmm hmm!

The windows is not of a great concern. It will leak sound outdoors, but that will not affect anything. I don't have any disturbance from the outside to worry about.

Very good, well done!

Can I ask, what insulation are you using?

I am looking to perform the same method.

erikdrink: tusen takk

beef: jo takk for det! blitt litt utskiftninger oppigjennom, men er veldig fornøyd med de jeg har nå.

charles: I'm just using a regular insulation from a norwegian company called "byggmax" - just a matter of price. It's about the same as glava/rockwool.

UPDATE:
just finished with the second layer of drywall - now i'm just waiting for the carpenter to do the final caulking, then I will start mount the electrical and the cable-routing channels. the room sounds like a church right now.. about 10 minutes of reverb. Guess it need some treatment

Ok, thank you.

A couple more questions if I may...

1) What was wrong with the way you first installed the RC8?

2) Are you planning on putting a carpet, or laminate flooring over the gypsum board? Would appreciate it if you could explain your choice.

1) I installed them upside down...

2) I'm going to put on a layer of "underlaying soft sheet " for the flooring (don't know what the english word for that is), and then laminate flooring on top. I've done that on other parts in the house as well, and got it approved by carpenters because the pressure is normalized out to the whole floor because of the softsheet and flooring, and the soft/fragile gypsum won't break. could of course put a layer of mdf on top, but he floor does about the same thing: normalizes pressure.

haven't done so much work this summer due to this:

I promised you some new updated pictures, Here's the second layer of gypsum. I didn't have time for anything else this weekend. Decided to build out my kitchen as well - so actually my girlfriend did the acoustic sealing of the studio. Approved.

Any suggestions about console placement?
the upper picture are taken where the "special corner" is located.
this is also where i intended to put the console shown in the paint-picture.

The lower red figure with the two black dots (monitors), show where i may put the main desk.

any suggestions?
The room is about this measures:
4,5m x 3m

I spotted out the location of the window and door.
The door is mounted with the hinges outwards, so it won't go into the room when opened.

I'm a bit worried about how the left speaker are closer to the wall than the right one, and how the sound will be because of this.
I can move them to the upper red, and place them more to the middle of the room, but I will then throw the sound at the short side of the room (3m) not the 4,5m wall.

the pain in the ass is the "special" corner....

Why not position the speakers 38% from the back wall?

You want to place your ears at 38% from the wall. RealTraps - How To Set Up a Room

Thanks, I'll try to make the desk the way that I can put the speakers on monitor stands, and the desk in front, and then be able to sit in about 30-40% out in the room.

I'll post some new photos of the project soon. I've been busy with rehearsals for our concert that went of this saturday with our pink floyd tribute band. Over 4000 people showed up along the river outside Kristiansand

Here's a couple of pics for those who are interested. The lasers were rented from England.

After seeing your keyboard rig, your car (I have a V70 Turbo), and knowing how much I like the Norwegians I meet,...seems we would have a lot in common. Keep up the good work. I have a very similar home studio which is as much a creative getaway space than anything!

Hehe, thank you
I'll try to speed things up a bit now, but I just get hang up with everything else.
This weekend I finished the new kitchen (sorry no pics yet)

I've installed the sound door though and sealed it with insulation and acryl.

I'm pretty satisfied with the STC rating. When i started the project normal speech could be heard outside the studio. I got no measurements of it, but when I play music from my livingroom, and move to the bedroom I hear a LOT of music, and that's through 2layers of gypsum on both sides.

When I enter the studio, which is closer to the livingroom, almost all the upper frequencys disappair, and I can just hear a subtle roomy lowend.
Got what I expected.
I've just added 2,2cm of mass on one side of the walls because of the already small space.

the walls is now like this:

Gypsum-Gypsum-10cm insulation-RC8 channels-gypsum-gypsum

the floor is built like this(seen from bottom to up):
old: wooden roof panel-15cm insulation-22mm MDF-Wooden floor-
new: U-boat floaters-2x2" studs with 5cm insulation between-22mm MDF-gypsum-gypsum-huntonit Silencio 5mm-laminate flooring.

the door installed is a 35db sound/firerated door.

thanks for all help from the forum so far!

New updates:

Sound door installed!

Test laying of "sound-plates/layer underneath floor"

Started the layering of the new floor.

the floor looks like this with a kind of "vintage" look.

I'm thinking about the wall colors,
Jotun has a new serie called "Pure color", with a shine rate at 01!
I think this color looks pretty nice. It's called "sober".

question is to put it on all 4 walls, 3 walls or 1 wall.
I'm thinking maybe 3walls with sober, and 1 wall with "hibiscus", which is a soft red color without shine.
