Thread Starter | New Studio Build In England... (small scale)
Hello there all! So.... I've been planning my build for the past 3 months or so. Getting together ideas (and funds!). My build consists of a single roomed studio which will be used for both tracking and mixing. Composition for TV and other types of media, as well as artist development and post production bits and bobs are my main duties so this set up will be perfect for me. I occasionally produce bands EP's etc however I use another studio for drum tracking. Less about me, back to this project.... The studio is being constructed at the bottom of my garden, roughly 70 foot away from any housing. I'm planning to build the studio on top of a concrete slab (which is yet to go down, 20ft x 12ft). The size is roughly 20ftx12ft and will be 7' 6" high inside. You've all heard the saying a 'Room Within A Room'. Well, this is going to a 'Shed Within A Shed' so to speak. A rough plan of the wall design can be seen below.... ![]() The 2x3 frames have now been changed to 2x4. Here's a rough drawing of what I want it end up like, however plans change. ![]() Construction finally started this weekend after WEEKS of clearing (Literally weeks...!). Here's a few pictures to wet your appetite! (apart from the first...) Mess... Wood... Arm Saver... First Panel... Window... Ok so, I'll keep you guys updated with my build and hopefully all will fall into place! Max |

Sorry it's been so long people... Been busy with work and general life! Studio is coming along slowly although it doesn't feel like it. All the groundwork is done, ready for the concrete to be delivered THIS wednesday! Hoping to get the roof up by next weekend (not finished... Just up...) which is very exciting. Pictures to follow!!!! |

Hi Guys! So.... A lot has been done since the last post. First things first, after digging out lots of soil... levelling, levelling and more levelling, I laid down a concrete ring on which I cemented some blocks. The middle was then filled with hardcore, sand, visquine, a thin insulation ring (to separate the slab from the block), celotex insulation, more visquine then concrete. I know I've given a very brief over view of ground-work, sorry! Here's a picture of the floor and the insulation ring... ![]() And the celotex insulation.... ![]() And here's the slab... wet... very wet! ![]() Then... once it had set I stood up the outer wooden panels that I had previously made and bolted them together. ![]() We're still missing the panel in which the doors will go. This will be constructed once we have bought it and know the exact dimensions. At the moment we have a temporary panel in to keep it square! (not in the image above...) These panels will be covered in some sort of wooden cladding. Still to choose the type of wood we are going to use. Initial plan was to use Cedar, however due to the soon purchase of an 8 Core Mac Pro, this is no longer possible! Finally, we got the roof rafters up. ![]() It's slowly coming together, I just hope the rain stays off for a week or so to give us time to get the roof finished!! |

Sorry about the massive wait guys! Ok, so even more has changed! .... we have an outer shell, complete with V Groove Cladding! (which is yet to be painted). The picture makes it look 'small', which I guess it is in comparison to some other spaces on here. However for what I want/need, it's perfect. (20ftx12ft). Next is a picture from a couple of weeks ago, inside the space. This week we had the Rockwool delivery. I never expected this much to arrive... ... and here's some in place. We're getting down to the electrics this weekend, as well as the internal roof's rafters. It's getting pretty exciting now as we hope to have it finished quite shortly. ![]() Every day we're doing a little more on it, with 2/3 days a week being full days. I'll try to keep everyone up to date a little more!! Max |

Just to add to that last post... Here are some technical details if anyone wants know. It's all pretty standard though. Insulation we're using: Rockwool RWA45 Wall Construction: Two stud walls, made from 4x2 Timber with a 2 inch air gap in-between. Outer Roof rafters: 6x2 Timber. Inside roof rafters(yet to go up): 4x2 Timber. |

Just as a matter of interest - is there any sort of vapour barrier going in on the inside??

Nope. As the room/space is completely air tight (everywhere is sealed), we have managed to avoid this issue! |

Ok, so since the insulation arrived we've moved on with a few more things... All the insulation is done apart from gaps where the vents are and places for the fuse box etc... ![]() We have also made the inside and outside door frames and window frames! Here's a little picture of the outside door frame. Complete with a lovely old oak sill.... ![]() Session are booked in from 6th August so we have our work cut out! Hope some of you are finding this thread useful in some way! |

Hi Mabrodie Your studio build looks great! I'm right at the planning stage of doing something similar myself. Could you possibly have a look at my thread and let me know what you think? I'd really appreciate your opinion! New detached 'one room' studio build- but which combination of shell and inetrnals? Good luck with the rest of your build! Cant wait to get cracking on my own :-) Cheers, Al. |

Thanks spacebat! Just had a look at your thread and it seems a lot like mine! You mention whether you are to build it from brick or timber? What I'd say, is that it may be easier to get the permission from your authorities (if it's needed!) if it was timber opposed to brick, as I believe this is looked upon as a 'non-permanent' build. Other than that, I look forward to tracking your progress! Max |
