Building a small project studio in seven short videos

I moved from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur recently and decided to spend a bit of cash building a nice mixing/video editing environment for my freelance work. It was lots of fun, and a huge learning experience.

Part 1

Part 2

Part 3

Part 4

Part 5

Part 6

Part 7
YouTube - Calamity Studio KL Room 07

It took my father-in-law and I just over three months, mostly because I was still getting dragged into paid projects that took a bit of time.

Thanks for watching, everyone. The room, like all studios, is still evolving, and the rack unit is growing rapidly, the latest addition being a MW1 for re-amping.

What's not shown is the absolute hell that I went through trying to trace a ground loop, that was only solved by making the entire signal chain balanced through mic-pre-computer-mixer-DBX-big knob-speakers. This entailed rewiring every cable at the back of the patch bays and making up a few more to boot. Worth the effort, though.

Also, the door hasn't been as successful as I hoped, and I'm probably going to have a proper steel skinned door put in either directly instead of the studio door, or in the lobby outside. That way I hope to get a +70db reduction instead of a +40dB.

But at least I can work now, which I'll have to do to pay for some of this kit. :-)

Nice videos! Have you done any measurements to your room? Did it end up as you predicted?

Really enjoyable videos, Paul. But just to clarify, are you saying the rock wool is itchy?

LOL.
@adassumpcao: I ran REQ Wizard and wasn't surprised to see a small mode at around 180hz. As every wall facing the speakers is already covered in rockwool I'm going to have to learn to live with it. Although I did make a slight EQ correction, for what it's worth, with the DBX graphic EQ set on it's lowest range. Everyone will tell you that you can't EQ a room, and I agree, hence the 'for what it's worth'.

Tony is now available for work in the Kuala Lumpur area, and the good news is that he still has all his fingers.

Glad you like my photography, bassjam. I'm lucky that some people actually pay me to do it, which finances absurd projects like building home recording studios.

and finally, the rockwool itch has gone. :-)
