Thread Starter | "Garagio" build in my suburban garage
So, a little introduction. I am a guitarist who is dabbling in some songwriting, and putting together my own arrangements in the box. I also do some guitar overdubs for friends projects here and there. So, up until now, I have had my gear in one of our bedrooms, which also doubled as a place to "keep" all my guitars, but due to a change in family circumstances (my son being born) we've had to get a bit creative with our space. So my wife gave me permission to move my stuff into the garage.....that's where it begins. Just to preface, i didn't want to use the entire 6m x 3.5m garage, as I needed just a small amount of space for my soldering iron and workbench. I also could not remove the garage door as we live in a townhouse (condo), so its in a little complex with matching neighbours. So, this is standing at the door from the house looking into my garage. The black plastic was hung just to give me an idea of the space I have to work with. You can see my work bench down at that end of the garage. ![]() Now looking back towards the wall from the "workshop" area ![]() So I decided I needed to start building a wall.... ![]() The catch with this was though, as I was unable to remove the garage door, and I wanted my wall to be below where the garage door travels up in the tracks, I had to essentially build a "soffit" or a wall with an offset. Unfortunately, jumping ahead a fair bit, (I was too busy building to take pictures) you can see that I have put up a wall, plus also a second wall section which is secured to a joist in the ceiling and some supports in between the two. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Now, in case you were wondering, that white cabinet that is hanging on the wall, is actually my media cabinet. As my loungeroom is on the other side of that wall, my TV actually hangs directly adjacent to that cabinet, so my XBox, DVD Player, Media Player etc lives in there for the loungeroom TV. So, that means that cabinet stays... Jumping forward a fair bit more, I put a wall in to cover the existing single brick wall on the outside of the garage. ![]() You can see in the next one that I have framed down in front of the window |

Framed and insulated with some soundscreen.... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Now for those playing at home...unfortunately we take a big step forward again to all the gyprock (gypsym plasterboard) having been put up. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I need to update with a few more photos. I made up some fake skirting panels to cover the exposed sections of concrete slab under the original existing walls that were there. Just out of MDF, I'll take some pics of those tomorrow. I'm up to paint at the moment. Completed a couple coats of undercoat on everything, ceiling has been "whited", now just need to get the door and frame all primed and enamel'd...then the colour starts going up. Once the colour is all up, I am going to be installing a timber laminate floating floor. All in all, I am pretty happy with the results so far. I can tell that I am not called to be a plasterer in life, but I think it turned out pretty good for a first attempt at a project like this under my own direction. More pictures and info to come! -Rob |

You don't even have paint on the walls and you already have the lava lamp in there. |

Final dimensions I'll measure up for you later today, but from the top of my head it is about 3m wide, and 3.5 - 4m deep. So, enough space for my desk and my computer, and some guitars and other fun toys here and there. Oh yes, that crown moulding we call "cornice", and every house in Australia has it pretty much. I had never seen a house without it until I went to the USA. |
