Arrow Finished Basement: Studio/Acoustic Advice Welcome

This thread was started with different pics,
I ended up buying a different home before I deployed.

So, been a long time. Recently returned from my deployment in Afghanistan.
I am contacting people who have commented on the original pictures, so they may edit.

Here is a video I made showing the basement studio area.
This is an unlisted video, and can only be seen if you have the link.
Does not show up with youtube quote tags, so here is the link..
Click there ---> Studio Upgrade - YouTube

Here is a photo of the dimensions.

Still need to do some before measurements.
Will be building my own panels: Products from local Lowes
Roxul Safe'n'Sound 2'x4' 3 @3" thick.
"Roxul 8-Pack 47"L x 23"W x 3"D Stone Wool Insulation Batts"

Superchunk Corner traps either out of the same Safe'n'Sound or
a couple Roxul 4-Pack 47"L x 23"W x 7-1/4"D 30R Stone Wool Insulation Batts.

Now that has potential. 8-9' ceilings in a basement is a luxury.

The pictures are great, but it would also help your progress and our understanding if you drew up a floor plan showing dimensions and the placement of windows, doors and so on.

Treatment often goes in corners so if the fireplace can be moved or removed it should make your life easier.

I too struggled with a fireplace in my basement, but only from a reconstruction standpoint for some sound isolation. I ultimately decided to let it stay because I thought it added value and character to the house.

For sound absorption purposes I am trying to use it to my advantage by converting it into a bass trap. Perhaps you can do the same-

If the fire place can not be moved I would not worry about it. Keep in mind that rooms have 12 corners so that one area can be skipped if need be.

As far as placement of mix, you will want to face the short wall and start with the mix spot back around 38% of the room length. Note that this is only a starting point so you will find moving forward or back will improve things.

One problem I do see with the room (treatment will help with this a lot) is the rooms length is over twice the length then the width and height. I have worked on a lot of rooms like this which is good that it is long but it does have kind of a tunnel effect to it.

Dozer,

Welcome back. Congrats on the new house.
You have symmetry issues since the right side is the foundation and the left is interior/open hallway/lossy walls, etc. with this in mind, the soffit/venting is the least of your issues. Have you begun to think about how you want the end result to be configured?

Baically going to have the KRK RP5's with the sub, and another set of 8" monitors next to the KRK'S. The game area and every thing is going to stay there. Is there any reason to do measurements now? I am anyway, just for before and after. Going to build panels and corner traps, measure again, then work on issues.

Went ahead and got 3" thick Roxul Safe'n'Sound.
Link:
Shop Roxul 12-Pack 47-in L x 15-1/4-in W x 3-in D Stone Wool Insulation Batts at Lowes.com

They did not have the 24" width.
Went with the 16" width x 47" length x 3" thick.
12 batts in package.

Superchunk Corner Traps, here I come.
Gonna have the triangular shelf, half way between
floor and ceiling. The same concept others have used.
Front to be framed and with fabric.

Going to have 32" face. 16" depth from face to corner apex.
Will be creating video of the project.

Here is link to video of studio area to be used..
NOTE: REMOVED GAMING AREA FROM BASEMENT.
WILL BE DOING UPDATED VIDEO, and MEASUREMENTS WITH REW5.
SPEAKER PLACEMENT DISTANCES SUBJECT TO CHANGE

Started my cutting for the Superchunk corner traps.
Electric cutting knife works like cutting through butter.

I did do some RTA, and have a pretty nasty dip at 117Hz, but as I have said,
that will all be shown in the "before" measurements I am going to take.

Update: conducted "Before" measurements. Will post soon.
Cut wood for halfway support., to be placed halfway between floor and ceiling.

Progress

Making progress.
Floor to ceiling corner bass trap,
32" face with 16" depth from face to corner apex.
Here are some pics, though I am also doing video, to be edited later.

Shop Roxul 12-Pack 47-in L x 15-1/4-in W x 3-in D Stone Wool Insulation Batts at Lowes.com

Halfway up one of the corners, with midpoint shelf.

One full corner complete.

Going to Lowes to purchase front panel framing lumber.

I have done 6 before measurements.
Both speakers, Left Only, and Right Only.
3 measurements with mic pointing at speakers.
3 measurements with mic pointing at ceiling.

Will post .mdat files later, with more explicit details of measurements.
Also monitoring chain.
2)KRK RP5
1)KRK RP10S Sub.
Room dimensions are in first post of this thread, with sketch.
Speaker distance subject to change.

NOTE: the current acoustic treatment you see, will change.
Some things in room will be moved, such as the bench seen next to the corner trap.
Also going to build a ceiling cloud.

On another note: I made the monitor stands my self out of 2x6 lumber.
Each monitor is on 3 little rubber cabinet bumper feet I got from Lowes.
Each bumper is about 1/4" diameter. Flat on one side, convex on other.

What are your thoughts on the positioning of the 2x6 lumber used
in for the monitor stands?
They would not act as some sort of tuning fork, would they...lol.

Full corner trap, with frame in front, frame not attached,
still have to add fabric. Frame built with 1x2" treated pine.
For 1x2x8": At Lowes
Treated Pine is $1.97 per piece.

Full shot, minus ceiling cloud, and other stuff I am building.
Don't mind the foam you see behind the desk,
that is all going to be taken down.
I have some other OC703 panels that are going to be placed in that area, Possibly.
The bench on the left will not be there when finished.
One side of the wall is 7ft, because of heating duct in ceiling, other wall is 7'10".
"STUPID HEATING/COOLING DUCT!!!" lol
Monitor distances subject to change, as well as possibly purchasing
additional 8" active monitors, which will not be tied into the sub.
Considering building a trap along the front ceiling edge, from side wall to side wall.
Triangular Roxul pieces with a 21" face. Would have to build a frame, for that.
The frames for the corner traps are not attached, they are
just leaning against them for now. Next photos will be with the fabric.

Midway shelf for corner trap. Outer frame holding fabric is going to be
screwed to the center piece, with one screw in center,
through outer frame, into front midway shelf piece, since
outer frame weights pretty much under 4 pounds, and
can pretty much stand there alone with a screw.

Midway shelf with triangular cut top cap.
Extra framing wood piece under cap was used
to give support for the front face edge of cap.

Left over Roxul for ceiling clouds.
4 batts, plus excess waste pieces(to be used for something)

Update: 4:26PM March 1: Been busy fixing truck..and doing drawings for my college Electronics Fabrication class.
Hope to get back to the improvements soon.

Here are the before measurements:
Target/Level was 80dB
Download DozerMeasurements.zip from Sendspace.com - send big files the easy way

That is six .mdat files.
Posted this in earlier post, but it pertains to measurements.

Video of what it looked like before measurement,
private video, can only be seen with link.
Only pay attention to the half where the studio area is,
the back of the room changed. The video is just
to show what the front of the room looked like
before I even started.
I say in the video, that "I don't think they put pink stuff or anything, in the walls
behind the drywall" but, when I was drilling for corner traps, found out there is
fluffy "white" stuff. Same consistency as the pink stuff, only white.
Also, its 7' 10 1/2" ceiling on one side, and because of venting, 7' 2" on other side.

Back of room now, after moving gaming area:
THIS IS THE WAY THE ROOM IS WHEN TAKING THE ABOVE MEASUREMENTS
So, Front of room from video, back of room from pictures. Sorry if I complicate things.
Don't mind the table on the right, or all the stuff laying around
on the ground, the place is under construction..lol
The big white box the ghetto blaster is on, I was probably
going to fill it with pink fluffy stuff. Its a hollow box made of 1/2" panel
boards, with internal framing, but its mostly hollow. The whole back side is open,
and can be filled with whatever. Could even cut some circular,
or stylistic slots/vents anywhere on it. Front? Side? whatever.

Side wall: Just a couch, and a cabinet full of nerd books.
All the foam you see on the walls will be coming down, making way for
panels and such. The foam will be used more for looks, I guess,
of course, will have some acoustic properties. However, its the ripoff foam
from foambymail...lol, so basically bedding foam, cut to shape like studio foam.

UPDATE: 3-2-13 @ 1PM
Lowes:
Going to get lumber for:2 ceiling cloud panels, 2 ceiling to wall straddle panels(Roxul)
As well as lumber for: the other 4 panels I have(OC 703)

Roxul Panels: 4 panels @ 15 1/4" x 47"
(6) 8' pieces: 1x4x8 @ $3.37 ea. Item# 201711 = $20.72

OC703 Panels: 4 panels @ 32 1/2" x 53 1/2"
(8) 8' pieces: 1x3x8 @ $1.38 ea. Item# 4512 = $11.04

OC703 Panel Spacers:
Three 4" 2x2 per panel. Top left and right, one bottom center. Topped with felt pad.
(1) 2x2x8 @ $1.64 Item#4513
Two top 4" 2x2 pieces will have screw hooks going veritical.
To be hooked onto eye hooks screwed into studs behind drywall.

Wood glue, new drill bit, box of 2 1/2" screws(fine thread drywall)

Chain link and hooks for ceiling clouds, and straddle panels.

Going to just use one screw through pre-drilled hole, per corner, with wood glue.
Might use 2 per corner, cuts price compared to internal corner brackets, which if I went that route,
I would need 32 corner brackets.

4 Wall panels: 33"x54"
2 Ceiling clouds: 16"x48"
2 Wall to ceiling straddle traps: 16"x48"
Now I just need to vacuum and clean up mess.
Then add fabric to everything, then hang.

Look at these little guys, made two of them with waste materials.
They will just be standing up somewhere, who knows.
Maybe I could make 40 of these, and do a scatter block type thing.
Probably not,,

Front corner traps covered. The lens on the camera has skewed the lines, making them look somewhat bowed.

One of the ceiling panels.
Its a navy blue silky fabric, with a square type design of a different even
silkier material.
The color is off, did not do color correction.

No problem, thanks for the support.

Here are the finished pics, still more treatment in the future.
Also have to purchase some longer monitor cables, around 15 feet, so
I can move my subwoofer around.
Currently uploading youtube videos, showing construction, and a private video for here, showing the
panels and such..

Side panels OC703 2" thick spaced 3" from side wall
Rear panels OC703 2"thick spaced 2 1/2" from back wall
Ceiling Clouds Roxul Safe'n'Sound 3" thick spaced 2" from ceiling.
Straddle traps at rear ceiling to wall apex Roxul Safe'n'Sound 3" thick
After measurements coming soon.

I was posting measurements over here.
Upgrading Acoustics/Measurements Included

But so it can be seen here..I have also posted a recent build upgrade.
Also moved monitors 26" from front wall, spaced 4ft apart.

So, decided to make use of my old walmart eggcrate foam that I
used for ghetto treatment back in the day.
Stuffed it inside the box/shelf at the back of the room.
Along with a car cover that I dont use, and a sound blanket.
Used some 1/4" rubbery foam type underlayment I found in the garage
attic, left by the previous owners. Covered the front of the box with
underlayment. My cheap attempt at some sort of bass trapping.
Heck, since I had it, why not try it.
EDIT: Will be pulling this stuff out and stuffing with white fluffy R30 Johns Manville
that will be left over from acoustic front wall that is being build.

Underlayment

Stuff box, that face is the top of the box.

Box covered with underlayment. That is the bottom of the box.

Box upright, at back wall.

Covered with blue fabric, Ghetto blaster back in place

Put some foam tiles on top of side panels, angled.
ALSO ADJUSTED ALL SIDE AND FRONT WALL PANELS OUT TO 4"
FROM WALL.

Since my sub is pulled forward for better response, and causing
reflection into measurement mic maybe,.
There was large hole at 700Hz, because its gone after
I put the underlayment stacked up on the sub, and a little on
the desk. It also cleaned up the waterfall decay in the lowend.
Still need to get the darn longer cables to position the sub better,
haven't gotten to that yet.

New measurements

And these are measurements with EQ.
Used my Emu1820M Patchmix mixer to route my mic to Wave, and Wave
to ASIO. Set ASIO delay to 2ms. This allowed me to route
the measurement sweep from REW, through my DAW, with the Eq active.
As you may have guessed, the boost in the lowend, of course
caused a little mess in the lowend waterfall.

I have another thread on here regarding measurements for my room, running parallel to this thread.

OK, going to Lowe's to get some Roxul Safe'n'Sound, and some more building materials. Going to build floor to ceiling corner bass trap in back wall corner, and add two more panels to ceiling cloud sides. Also panels to straddle back and side wall ceiling to wall apex, other.
UPDATE:
I got some sweet deals on hardware for my new panels I am building, from dun dun dunnnnnn
BIG LOTS baby!!!
Got all my corner brackets for the panels, and L-brackets for corner bass trap, for around $24
I still have alot of eye hooks and hooks, but will need to purchase more for hanging.

Since the weather has warmed up here in Michigan, I can do all my work in the garage.

Might also get some:
Johns Manville 300-in L x 15-in W x 9-1/4-in D R- 30 Fiberglass Insulation

When you unroll it, its actually alot of insulation for $10.
And it sits 9 1/4" thick when uncompressed.

Unfaced Roll Features Link

This also looks interesting, but I would have to do research on its abilities.
Johns Manville 8-Pack 48"L x 24"W x 13"D R-38 Fiberglass Insulation Batts
Thats 13" thick..

There was not much bass build up in this back corner.
Did a quick test afterward, Decay times improved in lowend.
Of course, still need to cover with fabric.
More stuff coming...

This: $10
Johns Manville 300-in L x 15-in W x 9-1/4-in D R- 30 Fiberglass Insulation

Unwrapped:

Had some leftover, so I will be making this:
Not sure where its going to go just yet.
9 1/4" doubled over, fit into 6" frame,
60"x15"x6"

Talking Guidance/Thoughts?

Decided to build up the front wall, behind desk.
Ok, so I am going to be taking the panels off the front wall, as well as the straddle traps at ceiling to wall apex.
I will be able to use those elsewhere.

I will be building a frame for acoustic material.
Once done, the whole assembly will be fairly light.
Here is the drawing.
If you look at my front wall pics earlier in this thread, you will see the duct
on the left side, so that is the reason for the duct cut out.
Also, cutouts for my plug sockets.
Squiggly line denotes acoustic material.

Here are my options, which route would be better?
What are thoughts on plastic or kraft paper membranes and the such?

I can either use all Roxul Safe'n'Sound batts, 2'x4'x3"
Two batts in each "well", which gets me 6" deep.
That is 16 batts total.
So two of these packages.
Shop Roxul 8-Pack 47-in L x 23-in W x 3-in D Stone Wool Insulation Batts at Lowes.com

Or, I could save money, and buy the same Johns Manville fluffy
white stuff I used in the post above, for the corner trap.
Put that in against wall, and the Roxul in front of that.
Pushing the Roxul in will compress the white fluffy from 9 1/4" to 3".
That would require one package of 8 batts Roxul, and a little less than 3 rolls of the Johns Manville.
Shop Johns Manville 300-in L x 15-in W x 9-1/4-in D R- 30 Fiberglass Insulation at Lowes.com

The white fluffy, is 300" on a roll and 15" wide.
I would put two 4' pieces in each "well", on top of each other, this would compress both 15"(30" total)
into the 2' "well". Then in front of that goes the roxul, which compresses the thickness of the white fluffy,
as I put in the Roxul.

However, as I have said, I can just use Roxul all around, with no white fluffy, at a higher price.
What say you?

Framing:
Considering using the 1x6 for all. Which actual width for this product is 5 1/2"
However, I can space the frame assembly an inch from the wall with my brackets
that are going to be used for attaching the whole frame to the wall, mainly
to hold it against the wall.
Going with the soft white wood, easier to work with, does not require drilling.
Held together with L-brackets.
Top Choice 1 x 6 x 8 Kiln-Dried Whitewood Softwood Board

In the end, covered with fabric, dressed up with moulding.

Costs: Using white fluffy and Roxul(substitute white fluffy with Roxul?, add $20)
Lumber: (I have some wood allready)
8) 1x6x8 @ $4.98 each = $39.84
Materials:
3) Rolls of white fluffy @ $10.45 each = $31.35
1) Package of eight batts Roxul Safe'n'Sound = $49.89
Total: $121.08 plus tax, minus 10% military discount.
Comes around $116.24
Allready have lots of brackets.
Fabric can be had at thrift shop.
Plus price of finishing moulding of choice.

Rambling on...
Would have left over white fluffy, for which I would pull the stuff
out of my "Poor Man's Bass Trap" that is located at back wall, holding
up ghetto blaster, and put the white fluffy in there instead. YIPEEEE!

The stuff I will be removing for this, from the front wall, my two OC703 34"x53"x3"
and the two straddle traps made of Roxul, can be relocated.
If I remove the current ceiling cloud...
Could use both OC704 panels as the new ceiling cloud.
That leaves me with 4) 3" Roxul panels to relocate anywhere.

Changed the plans a little.

So, behind that wall is poured concrete foundation.
I am in the basement.
There is white fluffy in the walls, and 1/2" drywall.
Now I am adding this to that.

White fluffy added
To be compressed with three thin slats of wood running vertical.
This is to make way for 3" thick roxul safensound
I could use fishing line, wrapped around small finishing nails.

Leftover for stuffing bass trap at back of room.

Two 1x2's vertical holds it in place.
Secured with angle brackets.
For the center top and bottom wells.
I removed the white flufffy and verticals, and used two 3" roxul batts
So total of 6" Roxul for the top and bottom center wells.

The Wall!
I ended up making the center top and bottom wells are 6" Roxul Safe'n'Sound.
All other wells have white fluffy and 3" Roxul.

Final leftover white fluffy that is going in bass trap
at back of room. You can also see, to the left. the four straddle traps/absorbers that will be running the length of the room, at ceiling to wall apex.

I also have my two ceiling cloud panels(which were originally on the front wall, before the big wall was put up.)
Once I cover the new Wall and back wall corner trap,,,,hang ceiling cloud and side wall apex absorbers, and stuff
the bass trap at the back of the room, I will take more measurements.

Front wall done.
Fabric held in place with clear tacks around perimeter.
So, I can always change things just by pulling off the fabric.
Fabric was 5 dollars at the thrift shop.
Believe its a queen size flat. Did not have to cut at all.

These were originally the left and right side panels, but now they
are the ceiling cloud. Two OC703 @ 33"x53"x2".
The side closest to the front wall is angled down farther.

The original front wall panels, are now the side panels. Same Two OC703 @ 33"x53"x2".
The third panel, the smaller one, is just leaning on the wall.
I have four of those, not sure where I am putting them just now.
Those are Roxul Safe'n'Sound 16"x47"x3"

I took all the ghetto foam out of the back wall box, and stuffed
it with left over fluffy. R30 Johns Manville.

Back wall, not finished. This is not how it is going to stay.
You can see the other two Roxul Safe'n'Sound 16"x47"x3" panels, and the other mini panels I made with some waste, on top of the thick dense foam square block. You can see the frame has been made for the white fluffy floor to ceiling corner trap. Just have to go find some black fabric to match the front wall corner traps.

Measurements coming soon.
I have yet to get those darn longer cables to reposition my sub.
