Building My Desk For My Home Studio

I sat down with my friend, known on here as 'SporaticMotion' and we designed my a desk that would suit my recording needs.

I already started building forgetting to take pictures and after day two of building, SporaticMotion called me and asked why I haven't posted pictures of my build yet.

I've been blessed with a "soon-to-be-father-inlaw" who has a small wood shop in his 60's styled basement.

Here are the pictures

More to come, as I progress further on the build.

Pic 1: 6U desk-top rack units. Just about to sand the putty and getting ready for the primer. There will be a totall of 12U (6 per side).

Pic 2: I actually put the top part on wrong in this picture. The top should be turned the other way. I'm leaving the backs of the rack enclosure open, as I want to be able to wire and re-wire my gear easily.

Pic 3: After I did the primer coat. I am going to be painting in a satin black.

Pic 4: Using a heat lamp to help the primer dry. It actually worked really well. This was completely dry within 20 minutes.

Pic 5: This is after I finished painting the upper and lower part of the legs.

Pic 6: I just wanted to show off the 60's style carpet my father in-law has in his basement.

Unfortunately, due to my work schedule, I am forced to wait until Wednesday to continue.
I will take more pictures and post Wednesday night!

Some more pictures to take at look at.

I have only have a few things left to do.

Sorry that I didn't clean off before taking photo's, but I have been really having to manage my time, just to be able to work on it.

Anyway, you should have a pretty good feel for how it will look at the end.

Instead of foam or filling, I used neoprene for the arm rest with a leather vinyl wrap

Let me know what you think.

Can't wait to see more of this. This is more or less the exact type of desk I would like to build once I finish building my home studio. Its given me some great ideas to think about.

So far so good. I see you changed your mind about the end caps. Good choice! Stained wood > plain black thumbsup

Yeah, I'm glad I did!
Now I have to figure out how to mount to the desk!
I think I have a solution for that.
The desk is coming home tomorrow.
All I have left to do on the desk:
- finish one side of the arm rest.
- Put the back powerbar shelf in place.
- Attach the side caps.
- Clean and take home.

Let the fun times begin!

I'm taking photo's to document my "garagio" build at the moment, once that is completed, I'll put up a thread about that, hopefully soon to be followed by a "custom desk" build!

Haven't put anything into it yet.
That will have to wait until I finish work.

You said the black is a stain? Looks super smooth. What product was it? Was it applied with a brush, roller, sponge? Also, what is the wood? It's hard to see if there's grain on the end or if it's mdf or ply... What is that stuff??

Looks super nice!

The Desk top is a formica laminate.
The Wood is just a plain Fir, but I really liked the grain pattern.
It is a solid piece of wood
I used a cloth to apply the stain and afluffy roller to apply the polyurathane.

The desk was made out of MDF and used primer before I painted with a "Silk Balck" paint.

Thanks for the compliments.

You're studio build thread looks awesome.

Hey John,
Thanks.
Gear will go into the rack space ontop.
I still have to buy the hardwaremounts for those rack spaces... or the other way would be to use wood rails and screw the gear into wood rails?
I still haven't decided.

The other thing I have to decide, is whether or not to use wood rack covers or to buy the black ones from my local music shop.

Anyone have opinions?

So here's a question...

I need a dual monitor for the desk?
I have a 23" and a 21" monitor to mount.
I also need rails for the desk.
SporaticMotion, do you know if L&M sell them or can order them?

They do sell the rails. You'll want a dual monitor stand to accommodate.

Ordering the dual monitor arm from the states.
Way more cost effective.

I'll be hitting L&M up as soon as I'm out of bed.
My jaw hurts.

Just thought I'd post a pic or two with some of the gear in it.
I had a friend in to program some Electro house/Dub stuff.
Lots of fun.
More to come when more gear is bought.
Stay tuned

I know you've already ordered an arm so it's a moot point but I'll chime in anyway. I've used multi-monitor setups for years and to me, they are a mixed bag. I've had 8 monitor setups for microscopy workstations that worked great and cut down on printing costs in a big way. For audio, I prefer either one large monitor (like 28 to 30") or a 3 monitor setup with the two outside monitors smaller and rotated 90 degrees so the long dimension is set vertical. I don't deal well with the seam down the middle at an audio workstation. I get neck stress, headaches, etc. But if my main work area is on the large monitor down the middle, then I put plug-ins on the side with other intermittent use windows, I'm fine.

Your desk looks great, by the way!

The desk look great. Would it be possible to post the exact dimensions of it? I'm thinking about building something similar, but I would need to check if it will fit in my future studio.
