Thread Starter | Live Room begins.....shortly
Ok, so after a bit of a break to work on some projects, the live room build will start in one week with a team of people. So it should move quickly from here on in. In the last few months we have been busy using the control room to complete this project which involves over 400 minutes of improvised music and video recorded over 100 days. 100 Notions from Nation of Two - YouTube And here is a prime Time Television News Story about it. 100 Notions from a Nation of Two Win TV News Story - YouTube But enough of that frivolity, now it's time to get building...again. |

I will let you know if it ends up touring to a gallery in Adelaide. Also, Sarah liked your comment that No Time is Ever wasted. And I agree. Vic

Viccy, What type of budget are we talking for your construction/fit-out (from empty ground)? Not including equipment/hardware of course..... Great looking build. |

Thread Starter | Budget Breakdown Quote:
I haven't actually worked it out, but I will give it a shot here. We bought this property/house for $15000 and got the first home buyers grant for $7000. So the house cost us $8000. It is an old school house build in 1886 on 2 acres of land. The school house was really really run down but we have slowly fixed it up. We never intended on living here, but when we made the decision to do it we realised that we would save $28000 per year on rent in Sydney!!!. So we thought well lets build our selves a great studio, pretend that we still pay rent every week and just put that into the build. even if it takes three years, it will be our space for what we used to just spend on rent. So, that's what we have been doing. We are probably 2 years into the build. We have big bursts of building when we have money, and when we don' ![]() ![]() t, then I just potter on doing smaller tasks in there. So costs : The Farmers next door levelled the ground in exchange for recording some acoustic guitar The Shed = $16 thousand (kit) - 22m x 10m Shed Build = $4 thousand Cement Slab (This was a wedding present, Sarahs mum arranged for an old family friend who is a cement layer to come here for a holiday for a week and they laid the slab for us. It would have cost about $11000 otherwise. Running Electricity sub box out to the shed cost $2500 Framing wood and labour to frame out the control room - I can't quite remember but somewhere in the order of $2500 The insulation (heaps of insulation) we got from EBAY for $8 per bag after the failed government insulation scheme. This was a very very huge saving!!!!! Probably we have used so far...um....80 bags? so that's $640 instead of $50 per bag.....which would have been $4000. Gyprock for Control Room was probably $1500 Suspended ceiling - (got from a moving warehouse for only $150. Lighting - all on sale, $80 in total. All the acoustic treatment in the control room was done with slats that we got for free, and framing wood, (a few hundred bucks). We used fabric that we had lying around. The floor in the CR was about $950. A lot of the labour was done by a local handyman with me helping. The electricity throughout the CR was run by a friend (qualified electrician for $150). That's a rough breakdown. This has prompted me to go back and document it all in excel. The live room is a more expensive build as we got a team of builders in for two weeks due to both hieight and 10 meter span of the room and because I needed a break. So that was the last two weeks and will make us broke again, so we will probably stop for a while. The team of builders have two more days, One day to finish the framing and the other day to start the gyprock (after we cable etc). So I am hoping that we can stretch things to have all the gyprock up, room built, then have a break while we gather materials for the acoustic treatment which we will do ourselves with a little help (but not from a team of builders). I'll compile the live room costs as they happen. As I said, this wasn't such a planned thing and we saved the initial money for the shed originally and since then have been doing it when we can. In bursts. Also, buy taking time as we gather materials it allows for cheap/free options to pop up. Taking our time like this has also saved us thousands of dollars. Anyway, hope this is useful info and I hope I haven't missed anything. Vic

| Lives for gear | What the....... seriously....? Aren't you forgetting a zero or two...? Our country is rediculously expensive compared to yours. In our country that kind of cash covers about the taxes you have to pay when buying property. Your poject will become a big succes if you can keep financing/investment very low, and seing the figures that wouldn't be that hard.

No, I haven't missed any zeros :-). Land and houses are very expensive here too however this pace is very remote (about 6 hours from Sydney) and was an old school house that was built in 1886 for the farmers kids around here. It was falling apart and was for sale very cheaply. Having said that, it was still a very lucky find and if it wasn't for finding this place then we wouldn't be in the position to build such a studio and to realise such a big dream. I have probably missed a good $4000 or so on the figures above for miscellanous things (wall plates, doors etc) and also the cost of the lounge, bedroom, bathroom we have installed in the studio also. And the last two weeks of building the Live room have certainly been more expensive. The remoteness of this space is what will make it a great place to record. To have complete isolation and focus on a project. Our idea is to keep our expenes down as low as possible so that we can have the space as our own amazing project studio for our own projects but also have it available to the public to use but not placing such a financial pressure on us to make it succeed as a business. So we can focus on recording, playing etc. Also, we have turned this place into an artist residency space where artists of different disciplines come, so it is really a space that we can give to people to develop different projects. That is our main aim. Vic
