Thread Starter | New Premises Build Starts - UK
Hey all, so after closing the doors to my old premises back in April/May 2010, i have finally settled on a deal with new premises, in my home county of Somerset, South West England. The old place was in the middle of nowhere, and i was renting it (admittedly very, very cheaply!) from the engineer than ran it whilst putting up with carpeted everything, a low ceiling that went down to just under 6foot at one wall!!
This new one is in a busy town centre, above a decent sized 350 capacity venue that has hosted the likes of Franz Ferdinand, Kate Nash, well the list goes on.
It consists of a "live" room, studio 1 on the plans, one end (top, on plans) of which has a 7-and-a-half foot ceiling (i'll be using this for storage, booths, and close mic'd amps etc) and then the most part will have an off-centre apexed ceiling, going up potentially twice that in it's max height internally.
A wall, complete with a window, sealed door and extra layer not present on the plans, separates this from the control room, which has a large size much like my old place. We'll be building the console and most rack gear (comps & convertors especially) into a single piece of furniture, with a huge sofa along the backwall. I won't get too hung up on gear, and the photos i've taken so far are plain awful! More to come, and if anyone has any ideas or thoughts they think might be useful, feel free to chime in!
FLOOR PLAN:

VIEW INTO CONTROL ROOM FROM LIVE ROOM:
Room is deeper than the photo lets on!
IDEA OF HEIGHT OF THE APEX'D PART OF LIVE ROOM:
Again, Room is deeper than the photo lets on!
As you can see, the whole out walls are finished and just need the rest of the rockwool inserted, and the inner skin. Doors are being beefed up, big time!

Hi
Looking good...
Was there much extra consideration needed on account of there being the adjacent live venue, in terms of isolation?

Hi Chris, yea luckily the builder that has been overseeing the plans has some experience in the field, which is good. Planning the separating wall to consist of what it does on the plans on one side of the girder, and then a cavity where the girder sits, then a second wall on the control room side as well, utilising different materials. The budget isn't exactly huge, hence no CAD drawings or super expensive materials, but so far so good!

Control room & far end of live room will be a 7'4 ceiling, and the apex of the live room ceiling will be following the line of the existing outer ceiling, so potentially anything upto to around 14' !

So, here's the profile of the new ceiling - The apex is pretty high, the guy there is on a step ladder! Those are the roof joist templates. |

Ok, here's looking through to the live room from the control room. Up so far is one side of the two parts of the dividing wall. The other side is going to be mildly angled, making the roof easier and creating even less parallel surfaces, and is isolated from the other part of the wall. |

So, we've been upgrading gear heavily too, so for the gear geeks in ya...
First up, gone from FW Motu & ADAT (yes!) to a lovely new SSl Alphalink Madi AX, and a nice new UA LA610, which also came with a free UAD2 Duo card! Thank you UA!
To add to our existing compliment of Marshall 1960A 4x12, Orange PPC 4x12, Marshall 1936 2x12 & Marshall JTM601 1x12 guitar cabs, we picked up a new Marshall 1960BV (Loaded with Celestion V30's). They are, of course, stacked like this for storage purposes....
..and we treated ourselves to a lovely new pair of Focal Twin 6 Be's. Yum! |

Thread Starter | Colour Choice & Ghost Repair
We're going top right of the 4 colours!
Ok, so the typical Soundcraft Ghost problem of a dead headphone jack knocking out the monitor section outputs had to be rectified, so we took her apart....
We're actually going to have a few channels modded too.
Then, after replacing the headphone socket, seeing as we NEVER use it, we decided to do a mini-mod of our own, and mount it inside and block the hole, as it'll be hidden in our new 8ft-long console anyway. Keeps the problem item out of reach!
Simple but effective!

Possible alternative to lava lamps! The picture doesn't do it justice, actually nicer in person. All 9 balls change colour.
ANYWAY! More construction and decorating pics this week, progress is catching up now. |

Leads for wallboxes through and ready for sealing up and soldering.
Consists of 24 XLR in, 4 Combi "out" (for headphone mixes or sending to live room PA) and 4 speaker jack "out" (guitar & bass heads to cabs). About 250 points to solder. a-w-e-s-o-m-e.... |
