Thanks! That's a great starting point. Couple more quick questions (if you don't mind!) Are you not using an external mixing desk? And how many rack spaces in total are there?

Thanks again for the inspiration. I've been wanting to do something similar, but can't find any websites with designs or templates. So this forum/ thread has been a godsend.

And I find I'm always having to compromise with the commercially available affordable workstations.

This is for my little production space. I left enough space to eventually place a control surface. There is 8u per side but you can leave the back open and add another 6u per side easily (on the back). In the end, that's 28u (and you'd want a patch bay)

It's finished.

So aside from the gong show of getting metal legs manufactured, it is done. I switched to separate stands and built angled tops for my desk.

I have built 2 of these now as well as a production desk. One of which is in a studio in North Vancouver.

If anyone want's the schematics and cutting patterns, please let me know. I am offering this for free to anyone who wants them. I have the drawings for this desk, a smaller version of it as well as versions with flat topped racks to place your monitors. I also have a version with a 6 degree angle incorporated into the working surface.

I do have 2 other desk designs that are not pictured here and are more minimal which I would consider to be better choices for those that are very acoustics minded. The large desks that I designed pass the mirror test (no "visible" reflective points on the working surface) but a desk that is around 6' long is going to have reflection points regardless.

The one in this thread is my desk design as well (this is the smaller version).

Other Thread

The design includes a pair of "legs" for the desk that are 7u rack space that can be used if necessary or I can pass on the CAD files for the aluminium legs but unless you can weld aluminium, you will have to have them assembled by a metal fabrication shop (as I am).

These designs are in no way usable to make a profit as they definitely resemble an Argosy in aesthetics. (and the reality is an Argosy is a much nicer desk)

Also, anyone in the lower mainland of Vancouver BC. If you need a hand building one, I'm always glad to help - I work for a 6 pack :D

Cheers

I must ask erm... why place vertically standing speakers... horizontally? I mean... yeah.

Just curious because everywhere I read that's a no-no due to the KRK's design.

Studio monitors vertical VS horizontal

There are lots of rules to be said for monitor placement. This however just works better in this room for me. I started with my monitors in an equilateral triangle with my listening position at 38% and then spent a lot of time moving my monitors around my room choosing placement. In reality, these are PR6's... they suck.

Cheers.

Dude, PLEASE can I get the design for this desk (angled backed version). Looks almost exactly like what Im after. My only mod might be putting a low angled 27" monitor in the middle although im afraid looking down might kill my neck!

I'd be interested in having a look at your design also. I really dig the desk in the 3rd pic above. Maybe you could upload the files somewhere like mediafire or dropbox

@sporadicMotion

Any chance you have some details and photos on how the arm rests were built and how they fit into the desk? I'm about to start a desk build & am struggling with a good approach for that part. Cheers. Even some fresh photos of your desk upclose on the arm rests (your photobucket doesn't seems to be working)
