New place in Groningen (The Netherlands)

This is my new place.

I'm on a tight budget and can't do the whole thing in one go.
I'm going to do basic stuff in the smaller room first (about 25m2) so I can work and save money for the big adjustments in both rooms
The smaller 'square' room has a floor resting on beams resting on sand and can be made workable by laying in a new floor (just bought a second hand solid oak floor to cover both rooms) and putting up some broadband absorbers/bass traps.
The bigger room (wobbly wall) is about 30m2 and has a concrete floor, street view and noisy neighbours above. This needs a lot of work..

A studio designer/builder will be coming over in the next two weeks for some advice.

More to come, questions and tips in this early stage are certainly welcome.

Thanks.

Ziet er veelbelovend uit!

I'm pondering this... Holland is a small, crowded country with not a lot of space left (compared to US, Australia, Canada f.e.). I live in de Randstad, and I'm still a 'student' and all that, and I find it hard to find a decent and affordable spot to build a studio in. How do you guys do that?

I would think it would be easier in Groningen where property seems to be cheaper.

That is one thing which is for sure... or places like Enschede where property pricing is also low, but still... even in those places you won't get the stuff for free...

Nice project btw !

Thanks for the nice comments.

Just made a google sketchup model for the studio designer to give an impression.
The scale is not exact, but you get the idea.

Dutch Dave, It's definitely less expensive overhere, but still a lot of money.
Sometimes you just have to dive in knowing it's gonna be feckin freezing for a while.

Picked up the secondhand oakfloor last weekend.

Any tips on removing or restoring hardwax and adding color to an oak floor anyone? I read you can ad color to hardwax. But there's a shitload of hardwax with damage on there allready. I'm trying to avoid having to remove all the hardwax (chemically or just with alcohol) and taking of a bunch of milimeters with sandpaper. (80m2 wood = 15+ full days of shitty labor)

I'm afraid this endeavor is just more of the above before the fun part begins. (dancing around butt naked with a twixwrapper crown experimenting with the leftover construction/cleaning chemicals...)

More coming soon.

The entrance, loading up the floor in Hilversum, starting the tedious task of removing hardwax with chemicals.

Got carried away with the sketchup.
This is the long term version...

It's big, so here's a link.

Suggestions? I attached an empty version for fanatics. thumbsup

Anybody any experience with sand as isolation material? Floors/walls (rock wool for sealing)

Thanks Reptil,
Hope so, it's a shitload of work as it's a second hand floor.

Nothing interesting happening at the moment, just sorting out the electricity and making some broadbands.

I'll put up some pictures in the next few day's just to keep the diary going.

Hope to move in somewhere next week and mess around with speaker placement etc.

Here's a new sketchup version.
As an alternative to a traditional setup I figured I might as well look at the option of combining live and control room, creating almost twice the space for either function while loosing the ease and flexibility of separate rooms.

Comments are more then welcome.

Smallest space = closet/ISO booth/machine room
Medium space = vocal/drum booth (drums would generally be recorded in the main space)
Main space = control/live room

Hi,

with so many Dutch Gearslutz in this thread I was wondering if someone can recommend me some dutch based studio designer(s) because I want to do some acoustic treatment in my home studio.

Thanks in advance!

Hello NoVi,
I suggest you mail Frits de Groot at Helios (Welkom bij Helios Pro Audio Solutions).
He'll be able to help you out.

Good luck!
