Breaker 17 Studio in Chattanooga TN

Breaker 17 Studio

We are currently working on adjusting room acoustics, collecting mics, and looking at building some seventh circle audio pres, and of course putting in a patch bay.

I have been looking at getting some Roxul Rockboard 60 from ATS Acoustics to build some gobos and we need to order some bass traps. Suggestions anyone?

We are also open to suggestions to raise awareness that the studio is here. I'm trying to give some work away to get more content on the website, clients on the list, and generate some word of mouth advertising but it has been a few weeks and I haven't heard much. I should be patient though.

Thanks in advance for any feedback!

finishing that phase i'm realising that DIY treatment is definetly the cheapest and it is customised in every way(acoustically and esthetically)

nice space you have there btw

Congrats on getting your studio up and running! Chattanooga is a tough place to get started, although there are a lot of musicians around that town. I grew up there, and I know and have played with or recorded hundreds of them.

EDIT: <snip> I'm a jerk.

Maybe start around $20 or $25/hr. That will help you get more clients, and those happy clients will generate some buzz for you. Then, when you add proper acoustic treatment, raise your rate by $5. Buy some nicer preamps, raise it $5. Get some outboard gear or another mic, raise it again. Upgrade your AD conversion, raise it some more. You get the idea.

Chattanooga is such a rad town. Best of luck with your studio!!! I will be in town for about a week at Christmas; maybe I can swing by and say hello to a fellow Gearslut!

what's up with the eq you have in your rack? Is that in line with your monitors?

The prices we charge are based on the sound quality we provide. If a client disagrees with our prices then this is not the studio for them. Our philosophy is our limitations do not negatively impact our sound quality. As much as we all like gear, it is not the most important part of the equation.

I appreciate your concern for the Chattanooga musicians and speculation that we just slam tracks against a brickwall limiter. I take great care and pride in my work. Sound quality is our number one priority and every single client has been tickled pink with the sound quality we provide, which is posted on our website because we are very confident in it.

If you don't mind I would appreciate leaving negativity out of this thread. So far everyone that has visited the studio views it as a positive for Chattanooga musicians.

Also, the EQ in the rack is in line with the amp driving the speakers mounted in the live room.

Nolan, I would love for you to visit. Unfortunately I will be out of town the week of Christmas but next time you are in town I would love for you to come check it out.

ok, reverbnation's player sucks. It played for 30 seconds and stopped. I'm on a fast internet connection though, so I don't think it's the connection. I think reverbnation just has a lot of traffic.

We do plan on putting up more treatment in select areas and building some gobos but surprisingly the we haven't run into any problems in the control room. The storage shelves behind the listening position seems to do a very good job for us. Also, perhaps it has something to do with the volume level I monitor at. For whatever reason it works for us at the moment.

If I do not want early reflections from the wall the source is moved away from the wall. It hasn't been a problem because everything is being close miced. If I do need a really dead room the back room is very treated. So far I have only needed to use it to separate loud guitars from a drum performance.

As far as gear goes the converters in the 003 and digimax are not ideal but also far from unusable. Andy Sneap uses his 002 all the time and his clients certainly do not complain. Same goes for the pres in the Control 24 and the Digimax.

We are looking forward to building some Seventh Circle Audio pres as soon as the owner can afford it as well as moving to PT 9 with an SSL Alphalink AX/MADI Xtreme card down the road as well. With that being said, I want Chattanoogan's to know I can create great recordings despite limitations. God knows I did it in college when gear wasn't working correctly, and I'm a better engineer as a result.

Josh,
Good luck with the studio. Chatt is a cool place.
Do whatever it takes to get people in the door. I say pick the most popular bands and just comp the studio time. That goes a LONG way in the south.

hey bob, how's your new location in atl working for ya?

Josh, I gave your info to someone wanting to do some VO work the other day, he said he was from soddy daisy. Just some script over a music bed, nothing fancy. I wasn't sure what your rate was for that, but I gave him a link to your website. I told him it would probably be cheaper to just hit you up than to drive four hours round trip to come to my place.

Also,
500th post!

Thanks for the referral Greg and thanks for the luck Bob! Every now and then when I go out to see what talent I can find and pass out business cards I'll find an artist or band I feel would be a pleasure to work with and I'll offer one song free to show them the experience we provide.

The owner is in Atlanta on business with his other business and checking out a used Focusrite ISA 428 while he is there. Hopefully it's in good shape and ends up in Breaker 17.

Very cool. I will give you a heads-up whenever I head that way. My folks live there, and I just finished up my MBA from UTC back in May, so it is a place that I get ample opportunity to visit!

Finally got more foam! And we put a 1/4" feed through plate on the wall between the "more live room" and the "dead room." We just need to move some of the old foam around to make it fit better.

We may end up adding a little more lighting but the foam is certainly an improvement in sound. Previously, there were more reflections than I wanted to hear in that room. Also, I will add, the drums are sounding great in that corner now!

Thanks for the compliment Greg. Hopefully more updates soon.

The new foam is glued and we put a 1/4" feed through on the wall from the larger room to the smaller one. We also put coat hangers on the wall to hold the cables. I'm about to run out and grab a few more for the last few cables left not hanging.

Wow am I out of touch...$40 an hr for rack rates?
$280 day rates? Is that what the market will bear in that area?

I listened to your demo reel - sounds good...if not a bit hot on the top end.
