| Lives for gear | Strange Weather construction blog
Hi everybody. I'm doing a construction blog with sonicscoop.com, New York City's recording news website. Instead of copying and pasting I figure I'll just post links here. The first installment just went up and it's all about how to find a space. If you've got any questions etc please feel free to either ask them here or get in touch by email. I hope this is helpful for all you other studio owners! Here's a direct link |

Nice. It'd be great if you put up key pics here along the way.

You asked for it, you got it So here's the front of the place: Classic willismburg vinyl-stone. It was built by a guy with no plans as temporary housing in 1919. And so it stands. ![]() Here's a shot of the 1950's GE x-ray machine the previous medial office left. Still works! If I can't find someone to donate it to soon I'm gonna strip it down. The switches in that thing are amazing. ![]() There are my two Studer 820's from Kampo Studios in storage ![]() And some pictures of the awesome wreckage left behind. You can see the exposed brick walls which will eventually become the outsides of the control room. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() There'll be plenty more as the place comes along! |

Second entry is up. It's about how to design a place, and how I ended up hiring someone to do it for me. You can go check it out on sonicscoop.com or just click this link right here. As many of you already know Wes Lachot designed the new Strange Weather. Not many pictures to add to this entry, but in the next one we start digging into the actual work. Please feel free to ask if you have any questions! |

Are you guys doing demo yet? I rode by a while back and saw dumpsters on out front.... wasn't sure if you had gotten all your legal issues sorted out.

Looks like you are having WAAYYY too much fun in the demo phase. Everyone should get to experience demo and refurb of old buildings. Builds character. In theory. |

Looks like you have some good ceiling height to work with. Try and keep them as high as possible. Try and keep those brick walls exposed too! What trains are you near? Are you going to put in big monitors? Thanks.

First off, a new blog is up discussing the demo at Marc Alan Goodman Quote:
Yep, ceiling height is going to stay at about 10' And the exposed brick is going to stay all along the control room walls We're about 75 yards from the Graham Ave stop on the L train And finally yes, we're putting in Dynaudio M3As for mains. We also have a pair of ATC SCM50s which I'm planning to set up in the live room. That way musicians can get a real listenback without headphones and without putting everything down and heading into the control room. Plus when people track without headphones the bleed will sound good (which I think is a far underrated concept) | |

Maybe it's time to put some more pictures on here ![]() Here's the view from the back of the studio now that it's all blown out ![]() The view is from the back right corner of the control room. Where it turns from white cinderblock to brick is the start of the live room, which stretches all the way to that stairwell in the front. Then there are two isos and a small lounge tucked into the front of the building. Here's a good shot showing how big the live room is going to be from the opposite angle. This is before they took out the brick wall in the back. ![]() And this shot gives you a clear view of the condition of the ceiling. In two words: not good. We're just starting to fix all the joists now. ![]() There are plenty more pictures than these on my photoblog at : Strange Weather Construction Photos! Enjoy! |
