Hi All, Well, the exciting news is that we have decided to move our beautiful studio to a new location, and build it fresh and brand new from the ground up. I will obviously post pics and updates as we go along, this is the very beginning and we have only started bashing and all wetworks today after months of careful planning and brainstorming. The New Studios will be Situated in Woodstock, CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA in a creative business hub called "Buchannen Square". It is a beautiful location here in S.A. right in the centre of many new creative spaces and businesses coming about in one centralized area. The Studio will cater for Advertising Agencies in SOUTH AFRICA, specializing in "MUSIC CREATION" and have the ability to be flexible enough that it will cater for International Producers/Artists as well as Local Artists. The nice thing about it is that there will be many different Producers/Engineers from across the world which we are connecting with and will collaborate with, to make the studio a very accessible facility. We also hope to give South African Bands and Artists a platform and open up late night sessions and an after hours program to facilitate international quality recordings at a very affordable rate ![]() Here's a draft of the plan of the studio. There will be Central LIVE ROOM, 2 x Control Rooms, 2 x Vocal ISO Booths, a Kitchen, Entrance, Bathrooms, Shower facilities and Balcony. Will post more soon - cheers. WJ

Are you sure the STCs on the iso walls will be enough for adequate separation on vuvuzela ensembles? (Looks like a nice place. Make sure to account for the fact both control rooms will be used as tracking spaces at times. Tie-lines and space.) |

| Gear nut | The Shell. (And Cape Town Sunset)
Here's a first pic of the open shell. We started demolishing the back rooms you see there this morning. We'll be completely building everything from scratch for economical reasons and ease of use. Just had to put the sunset pics up, it was an amazing atmosphere earlier. The 2010 World Cup atmosphere here in S.A. is so inspiring, its so warming to have so many different people from all over the world in our neighborhood. Love to all, cheers W PS: Can you see that ship on the horizon in the 3rd pic? Mystical.... Last edited by waynejoshua; 10th July 2010 at 01:22 AM.. Reason: Spotted Ship on Horizon :-) |

Ok, so we're actually off to the right side of the "Buchanan Building" (pronounced Buk' anan, not bew-canon apparently) called "the Hills" Building. Part of the whole of "Buchanan Square" which also has an Armoury Building and some revamped and restored old buildings that have been in Woodstock for ages. Luckily there's a nice long gradual ramp from the ground floor up, to wheel up things like old Hammond organs, Grand Pianos, Large Drum Kits etc... See pics... "Arthur Madolo" is the guy in the red jersey, he's an old friend and helped us build our last studio and our home. Fabulous guy! My Brother "Shai" is the guy cutting strips for initial viewing layouts once the bashing is done, to see if we are going to shift anything last minute. Shai will be in charge of "Studio B" once we're complete. My father "Hilton" is the guy standing on the tiles in one of the pics, also another studio wizard, he's built 6 major recording studios over the years up until now, so its great to have a good team for this one. Enjoy the photo's. WJ Last edited by waynejoshua; 14th July 2010 at 10:39 PM.. Reason: Spelling error |

Note that, in South Africa, all the wall construction in the country is brick and mortar. At least it used to be. In fact I think code calls for double thick brick construction with an air gap in between, in certain situations......load bearing perhaps or between bedrooms in houses. Certainly more difficult to deal with IMO than framing out using 2x4 lumber like here is the USA.

| Gear nut | View of Table Mountain & Lions Head From Studio A!
Hi there folks ... Here's some shots of the view from ISO BOOTH A next to Studio A... When we're done, you'll be able to peep out at Cape Town's famous "Table Mountain" & "Lions Head" while tracking vocals if you wish! The World Cup has come to an end, but spirits are high here in S.A. and we're glad to still see many tourists coming in and out of Cape Town, it has been a fantastic festive event which we cannot forget. So we have also started building our shower/bathroom section of the studios and will also complete kitchen area and entrance while we wait for materials, rockwool, dry wall boards etc.... We're going to obviously float all the floors of all the rooms besides the kitchen and bathrooms, so we have got the ball rolling and have started the brickwork. While waiting for stage 1 to get underway, My brother and I walked across the road for something to eat at a magnificent little eatery called "Kitchen". The owner "Karen Dudley" is a very colorful lady with great food ideas and only uses all local produce and try's to keep things organic as much as possible.... Guess I know where we'll be eating lunch from now on Met with the landlord and tied up some last minute business, and we're set to start really moving now, time to finish the whole building process is 6 weeks. I guess well go over maybe two or three weeks, I know how these things go, so lets see. ... I've also ordered some boutique gear from a good friend here in S.A. "Matt Alison" who makes some amazing custom stuff, has his own tech company called "ASHTON AUDIO" he's a genius and a great guy. Check out his site for more info. Ashton Audio - Pro Audio Solutions Very excited to receive some amazing Pre's from him in about 6 weeks from today, he's busy building us some custom units.... Ok, gotta go. W |

| Gear nut | And more....
We're doing the floors a bit differently to how we've done them before this time... The standard floating floor idea obviously, but instead of U-boat rubber blocks, we've used off-cuts of neoprene attached to blocks and creating a structure which we will add layers to... Rockwool and another two layers of Supawood and dry wall over this initial layer of Supa wood. Then after that the final floors will be laid down.... And rooms will be built on these floors. Enjoy... | Gear nut | Control Room Floating Floors.
So after doing Control Room "A" the way we did it, we figured we could move faster by doing control room "B" with longer strips of brandering and rubber stops every interval. That way we could insert and cut the rockwool more easily and move quicker as 8 weeks seems to be turning into more like 10 and we need to finish by deadline.... Enjoy the photo's, cheers WJ - Dreamspace Recording |
