Building My Little Box

So I started a thread on one of the other forums that I frequent, but it didn't occur to me to do the same over here as well ... for anybody who might be interested in the build of a small "box" to put some of my stuff.
So I am going to go ahead and post the same things here - that I have posted at my other home (The Ultimate Metal Forum).
I hope you enjoy.

Alrighty.
This is probably gonna seem like a boring topic - since there are other threads that completely destroy what I am about to do.
[à la Eddy's Studio Build]
But - I still wanted to share it with somebody - seeing as I have no friends who give two squirts of piss about this type of thing.

My wife is evicting me. Well ... that might be a little harsh ... but she is strongly encouraging me to get my humble setup out of the house.
So I am gonna move my stuff into our utility room.

The only problem(s) are:
* very small space
* no insulation
* I have no money for this type of thing
* puny amount of equipment that I have doesn't warrant a space of its own
* I'm disabled, which means I will have to pay somebody, or ask family to
help out with this "deconstruction"

So, when given a bag of lemons, you make lemonade, right?
Yeah ... "and then that lemonade turns bitter, ferments and turns to pigswill"

The space is small. Really small. Like - a little larger than a jail cell.
20' (L) x 8' (W) x 9' (H)

Since the space is so small - nobody wanted to come out and give me some styrofoam insulation in the wall cavity.
I wanted styrofoam because I like the thought of being inside an ice chest when it's hotter than hell outside!
But apparently - due to my small size - nobody around here wanted to give Ol' Uncle Scott the blow job.
The (2) companies I spoke to said I just wasn't big enough for their efforts.
****er heads. How dare they tell me I'm too small. Don't they know that shit scars a man for life. Why's it always come down to size?? Doesn't my passion count for anything?!!!

So that means I'm gonna have to go with the regular stuff, I guess.

Next thing is the money factor. I have none. I haven't been able to work for apprx six yrs. Long story. The short version is this: five "operations" on my back; and probably half a dozen "procedures" done on my back, legs, and nerves (which are shot, by the way). I walk like the fuggin' Hunchback of Notre-Dame. I'm not much prettier, either! But I have to use a cane to get around. I need to paint some flames or something on the side of my cane ... or get one of those kewl ones that have a dagger "hidden" in the handle. Whoa! I'd give new meaning to "crip with an attitude"

But I digress.

So now I am wondering: should I even go through with this pain in the ass project? I only have a couple of things to put in the "Box." And that shit isn't even kewl enough to talk about.

You're fuggin right I'm gonna go through with it.
**** the nay-sayers!!!!!! And **** my conscience, too!

So the small project begins.
(more to come in a moment - gotta go play Daddy for a bit)
Take care

So where were we?
Oh yeah .. I had to change some poo-poo diapers, but now I'm back.

On with the deconstruction:

So I let my two oldest sons take a proverbial whack at things.
I meant for them to remove my old Peavey Chorus 212 .... but that didn't happen.
No biggy. The pots already needed a change ... in addition to some other things. Guess you could say it's collecting dust.

As opposed to getting the standard pink fluffy stuff for my wall cavities - I decided to geaux with Johns Manville R-15

I know it isn't going to make any real difference with regards to me hearing what's going on outside, and folks hearing what I'm doin' on the inside ... but at least there will be some insulation where there was none before.

Considering I'm probably not going to be recording any live instruments in here any time soon, this will suffice for now. But there are some other goodies that I need to take pics of ... for the Low End GAS folks out there.

My brother is coming over in a bit (I hope) to finish the job my boys started.
I'm gonna be checking out some drywall later on today.
So I will follow up for anybody who gives a hoot.

Take care, and thanks for reading!

Okee-dokee
It's not much of an update - but my brother came through for me.
He managed to complete the drywall removal & even swept up for me (I'm easily impressed).
So here are some more boring pics of the "Box" minus the old drywall:

Like I said - not much of an update - but when you consider that I can't do any of this shit by myself, it's a lot of much-appreciated-effort.
Anyhoo. Thanks for taking the time to read this.
Be back soon.
Take care

So basically your wife evicted your gear, not you, right ? That's tough, but it could yet be tougher. I still feel you for the hard part of having to ask for help, ain't as easy as it seems. To enlighten your day with a little humor, may I quote a friend's recent blurt of wisdom : "Life is like a chicken shack's ladder : steep and full of sh*t".

Hold on ! Best of luck to you.

Right on! Here are some more boring pics.
Not much has happened in the past few days - I've been feeling a little bit ill - and my brother has been working.
But he was able to come over today and hang the insulation for me:

Like I said - not very interesting at all - but I wanted to show it somebody nonetheless!
Might get to hang some drywall tomorrow ... all depends on my brother, I guess.
Thanks for checking out the thread.
Will update soon!
Take care

Rawk'n'Roll, peoples.
So here is the update ...

My shit-cock-****-head-ass-munch brother decided to get ****ed up at a crawfish boil the other day.
That's the short version.
I had to hire somebody to come out and HANG the drywall - not finish it (because I can't afford that type of work) - JUST hang it.
But ... hey! It's all good. Some of my fellow rednecks decided to hook me up on short notice.
Here are some shots of the drywall which still needs to be floated (or whatever you wanna call it) - but I gotta admit that I am high as a fuggin kite!
I'm pumped up and ready to get in the ring with Mike Fuggin Tyson ... to eat his ear for lunch!!

Thanks for taking the time to check it out. You folks rewl!
Take care & will be back in a bit.

I went to Home Depot and rented a spray gun ... it took all of 15 minutes to spray the room. It is a lot darker than I thought it would be. I dig it, though.
When I hang the treatment and other things in there, I think it might come out purdee kewl!
My wife thought some textured stuff would look neat - so I told her to geaux to town and do it!
You can't really see it ... but it's there

Holy shit that's dark!!

Take care

Alright.
So I went ahead and purchased the least expensive Laminate Wood from Home Depot.
I decided to stick with the darker color - which (in this case) was a Brazilian Cherry.

Hope to have this put down in the next day or so ... but we'll see what happens with my "help!"
Thanks for checking out the thread.
Take care

Actually ... I'm a fuggin liar and didn't realize it until a minute ago.
My brother came by and said he would come back later this afternoon or in the morning, and lay the flooring down for me.
But I didn't realize I told y'all the wrong color:

It's actually called "Estate Cherry"
So ... it's not quite like I was thinking it was ... but it is still gonna do the trick for me!

I'll hopefully be back soon with some new pics.
Thanks again & take care!

3 steps forward ... 2 steps backward.
The flooring is done.
I am happy with it, but it wasn't what I planned.
In addition to the floor that I already bought - the color of the room has changed as well.
I took a couple of quick shots just to give y'all an idea of what's going on ... and the walls aren't done being "painted" yet, either.
My best friend is going to do some "faux" (brown glaze and some other stuff) painting on the walls for me.
I couldn't argue with her ... as she was the one who went ahead and put the flooring down for me ... plus, I liked her idea to be honest.

I was just looking at these pics I posted ... and the pics look nothing like the actual color.
I think it might be because of shitty lighting, or the shitty camera!
So I wanted to post what the color actually looks like:

I hope that didn't burn y'alls eyes too bad!
:-P

Once again - thanks so much for taking the time to check out the thread.
Take care!!

Talking

Hey, guys.
Here are a couple more pics:

As you can see - the piss yellow is gone. It didn't work out quite like my wife hoped it would - but that's ok.
The room could be purple with swirly shit on the walls, and it wouldn't have bothered me.
But I am happy with this color (Toffee Crunch - Behr paint) and how everything turned out.
The next thing on the agenda is to start placing the treatment and whatnot.
Thanks for taking the time to check out the thread.
Take care

Thumbs up

Hey, bud.
Thanks a lot for taking the time to check out the thread.
I appreciate your reply.
Funny you should say "man cave"
My wife has been referring to this project as the "boy cave"
I have (3) sons ... and all are excited about finishing this project!
Guess that's why she calls it the "boy" instead of "man"
Or maybe she has a more sinister, derogatory reason ... hmmm.
Gotta check out that theory!

Thanks again for your reply. Hope that you take care

Thumbs up Thanks, Doc!

Thanks for that, Tony.
And it's only been ... what ... 5 yrs since I first started looking into this?
Where does the time geaux?

Pretty much ever since you got the studio going for your students.
Granted - this isn't the same scale as most of the cats on the forum, but it's going to be just fine for me to do my videos, and work for local bands.
I'm still holding out for an ATB ... but my sights are on the 8-channel version!

But thanks again for the reply, Doc.
Hope things are going well. Take care

Alrighty, then.
So I am at a place where I could use some input, please.

I am posting these pics to give you an idea where I would like to set my desk. It's hard to tell - but the desk is actually about 2' away from the wall.
In the corners behind the desk - you'll notice there are (2) out of (4) BareTraps - I put them there just to give some sense of measurement, etc.
These BareTraps are apprx 4' x 2' in size (I believe).

So why do I need y'alls input? I am curious where (on the walls) to place the rest of my treatment.
Here is what I have:

Two: 4' (H) x 2' (W) x 2" (D) "panels"
Eight: 4' (H) x 1' (W) x 2" (D) "columns"
Twelve: 1' (H) x 1' (W) x 1" (D) "blocks"
Four: 4' (H) x 2' (W) x 3.25" (D) "BareTraps"

Just wondering if anybody has any input on the placement of these units.
I have an idea or two on how I might hang them - but before I commit, I wanted to get some additional opinions.
Thanks and take care!

One other thing I meant to ask:
having a 2' space between my desk and the wall ... is that a good idea, or am I pissing in the wind?
dfegad
The reason I have a space such as that - is because I recall reading somewhere that could be a good thing ... but I can't remember where I read it, or who said it
And (if it's worth anything) I am using Focal Twin 6's -
Thanks

Is the room 20' L finished? I've been under the impression that the listening position should be somewhere near the 38% of length mark, measured from the hard surface of the front wall. That would put your ears around 7'7" from the front wall.

But most of the experts say that the 38% mark is mostly a starting point to get your head out of the location where the most commons room modes occur (I think). I have no idea if your dimensions create specific room modes that would require a significant change in LP towards the front wall. Maybe one of those folks will chime in.

As a general rule of thumb for a room like yours, monitors should stick to the wall as close as possible. It is also generally admitted that the listening position should be around 38% of the total length of any CR.

But as another worthy general rule of thumb, mind that general rules of thumb are just starting points. Careful measurement and analysis should prevail. Alseaux worth your time is reading your monitors' tech specs, which should provide with info pertaining to ideal listening distance and such details.

Remember that acoustics (unlike soundproofing) is a statistic science, much like chaos theory. We know tendencies and rules, but we can only favor possibilities.

Wow. Very technical input, folks.
Thanks a lot for taking the time to share the info with me.
I am going to take all of this into consideration.
I'm glad to hear that I might be able to get away with having my monitors up against the wall ... that means more space to give the illusion of a larger room.

Again - thanks for your time and input.
Take care - both of you.

I prefer monitors away from walls. My starting point is 1/3rds for length and width. I'm willing to sacrifice some bass response for the depth and image focus you get when there's air around the monitors.

According to some literature on the Genelec site, placing monitors between 50-160 cm away from the wall can cause LF cancellation, IIRC.

edit:
Just looked it up and they may just be talking about that particular speaker (1037C).
