| Gear Head | Shadow Sound (Glasgow)- my own studio part-build
After months reading this forum I'm at the stage where I can start posting up pics of my new studio. It's based in Clydebank, near Glasgow and I'm doing recordings and rehearsals. It was under previous ownership 'till February this year and I've had my work cut out for me since day one, with a water leak and a break in between closure and my taking the keys. Pics to come tomorrow because i've just uploaded 115 of them and my brain is fried. |

I took over the studio from a guy who went out of business before Christmas, so they place lay empty for a couple of months while I sorted out new lease/etc. I would sketch you out a layout, but I'm useless with that planner programme. The place consists of control room (6mx4m), live room/rehearsal room 1 (9mx5m) rehearsal room 2 (6mx5m ish) When I took over the only "finished" room was the smaller of the two rehearsal rooms. Here are some pics from day 1, 8th Feb 2010: Control Room as I found it - total mess: ![]() Room 1 - lack of ceiling/lights: ![]() Room 2 - post-hoovering: ![]() aaand control room roof was partially covered in eggbpx foam as so: ![]() and instant progress was made and work cut out for me in the control room on day 2: ![]() to give you an idea of the layout, the door in the pic is to the small toilet (just to the right of the control room) |

photo of room 1 in thge first couple of days, no treatment in place. The first couple of the panel absorbers were vinyl picture frames backed with egg box foam: ![]() hallway into the control room, door was left unfinished: ![]() bringing in the gear and stashed it in room 2 in the mean time; from left to right, Tama Superstar Hyperdrive (22, 10, 12, 14, 16), Pearl Session Custom (22, 10, 12, 14), PDP LX (22, 10, 12, 14): ![]() the cable sorting party: ![]() progress pic, control room is cleaner and showing the plasterboard needing fixed above the door: ![]() the hallway after a repaint. The smooth section at the top of the wall is where there was originally a gap inbetween the suspended ceiling and the wall. This was plasterboarded over and the cavity behind was filled with low density loft insulation. ![]() Room 1 after the new suspended ceiling went in. Still no lighting though. Basic equipment setup, both my and the studio kit set up down one end of the room, this didn't work too well. |

room 2 being painted, we cheated and just moved everything into the middle: ![]() room 2 sporting its new coat of paint. The black pictures hanging on the wall are the same foam backed ones and keep the HFs in the room down pretty well. This room has 3 plasterboard walls and behind the drumkit is the original brick wall: ![]() room 1 showing the window to the live room: ![]() room 1 was still on the live side for rehearsals after putting in the ceiling in, so I made four large panel absorbers. These were done using rectangular strips of wood, covered in stretchable felt fabric and backed with eggbox foam that was taken from the roof. The four panels measured 2mx1.25m(aprox). The pic below shows them in situe. Both pairs were put up parallel on the far walls: ![]() Room 1 was finished off with a curtain over the window to the control room. This flagged up reflection issues during rehearsal sessions. Lighting went in the same day, 24 spotlight bulbs in the room on a dimmer switch, nice and bright when it needs to be ![]() Showing the new curtain and multicore in place, more on that later... |

looking pretty tidy, sorry, can't say we have the same taste in colour, that blue in the hall, and green in the room really dont agree with me!! what made you chose the plasterboard panel ceiling? have you got any acoustic treatment in the ceiling space? looks like a great place to rehearse!, loving the big black couch |

I couldn't tell you why the ceiling was plasterboarded in the rooms, it was all done pre-me taking over. There is dense rockwool in the ceiling though above the plasterboard, but I've no way of knowing if the board is double layered/etc. The roof above is corrigated metal and is angled as in /\ so I'm able to climb up through a hole in the roof of the toilet and have a looksee at the rockwool. The black couch is incredibly comfy, great pace for a power nap More pics of room 2's progress and the control room to go up, It's close to finished now |
