Am I dreaming - Studio build out has started!

Hello Slutz! I've been getting smart from GS for a long time and now I will attampt to allow others to learn from the mistakes I will likley make along my way in building my studio!

This is all I have thought about for years and its finally STARTING to happen.

This buildout will be done in the basment of my house and will be done on the tightest budget imaginable. When I say tight I mean tight, actually laughable!

Luckily I have grade above 3 of the 4 sides to the basment and heavy hardwoods around the property so Isolation will not be too much of a challenge.

Attached is the existing plan and a few pics (im clearly no photographer)

in the next few days I will post the few pics Ive taken up until now to show how things have progressed, through envelope insulation and framing.

I welcome anyones input and hope others will see my mistakes (learn from them) and see how Im going after this one piece at a time, or one 2 x 4 at a time.

More to come soon!

Thanks to all you dirty gear slutz!

Proposed

Long and narrow space. Bearing wall down the middle and no budget to open it up.

You can see my intentions for the LR and CR. This is the basic layout and although I wish all the rooms were bigger this will cover my needs plenty.

Roughly 700 SF will be finished.

The live room is approx 21' x 12' and the CR is 13' by 8'-4"

Ceiling is around 9' and has a great deal of chase/soffits for HVAC. Alot of this will be square but I am also putting in some angled soffits to cover sanitary and electricallines, which in a spec house like this are always nailed right on the underside of the joist. The least 90 degree corners the better right!

more to come as time a funding is available.

Wow, looks like 8 foot ceilings in your basement. Lucky you. Pretty good amount of space for a basement in general. Can you give us a plan with the rooms labeled? I'm having a little bit of a hard time imagining it.

Otherwise, AWESOME! It's a great feeling isn't it? I'm 11 months deep into my build and about halfway done. I feel your tight budget. I am making my own bricks right now to save money. ahaa.

My only advice is to ASK QUESTIONS! There are tons of professionals and amateur experts on this forum that will be glad to unload some of their knowledge on you.

Good luck. Take a deep breath. You have a long way to go.

Neil

Are you attempting to maintain a visual between the CR and the studio proper? Have you considered facing the live room with your desk and putting the door in the center of the wall with a window in it? It might be tight having to walk around your desk to get through the door, but in my opinion having a sight to the musicians is vital.

Framing and envelope

First couple of walls went up and I hung plastic to isolate the room where I set up the mitre and put the beerator.

Put up basic fiberglass R-13 in all the uninsulated exterior walls that are frame composition.

from this point on I framed, and framed, scratched my head, and framed more walls.

As im sure you know its easy to plan plan plan and then before you know it a wall is up and you find yourself thinking what if I had moved that this way or that.

I agree a line of sight is crucial and I plan on framing in a small window in the staggered stud wall between the CR and LR. I still need to get my head around the best way to keep the isolation of each wall side/studs and create the window rough opening.

Attached is a current pic from last night that show how the framing has come about in the CR and a few shots of the staggered stud wall, and the soffits that are eating my rooms.

Any thoughts on the window framing are greatly appreciated.

I been watching your thread and you are moving along well. Good work.

I started about 6 months ago and progress is always in line with paychecks. HA

The feeling of seeing this dream come to life is well .... the most fun Ive had with my clothes on!

Thanks for the comments Neil. Love the VU ink!

If I were not spending every penny I have on this buildout I would probably have finished my leg pieces, but hey I got to prioritize right.

It's been almost a month since my last post. I have been working on some live multi-track recordings and have not had much time to work on the new place.

Good news is that all the proceeds from the live work will go to materials.

I will post some pics of the additional soffit and ceiling framing later this week.

I'm starting to think I should remand this thread

"the slowest studio build ever"
