Hey, SteveP -

I just came across this thread, and I wanted to say congrats and good luck, it looks like it's gonna be a gorgeous space. I built my own place, pretty much single-handed, so when I say I feel your pain (esp. with sheetrock and insulation) I mean it literally.

My place is two rooms, both room-within-a-room in my basement, all walls and ceilings 3 layers of 5/8" sheetrock. I figure I put up about 15,000 lbs. of rock, and since I'm in a brownstone-style building in Brooklyn, I had to carry every single sheet, one at a time, from the curb where they were dropped, up the stoop into my front hall, back it into my apartment, back it out into the basement stairwell, and then get it down the basement stairs. I cried a little when I saw your first picture of two pallettes of rock being driven in by forklift.

And my timing on the insulation was phenomenal, too - did it in the middle of July, before the AC was hooked up. I wore long pants, long-sleeved shirt, hat, safety glasses, and dust mask. Only almost passed out.

But it was all totally worth it! (Although next time, I would mortgage a small child to hire someone else to do the grunt work.)

Anyhow, looks like a great job, as well as a nice job documenting it! Keep it up, I'm looking forward to the next installment.

Wow that was allot of work even before you had to hang the rock !!!

I had this Huge roll up door and waited to fill it in until all the drywall was delivered.

The first studio we built we had to haul everything in through a small door ..... but still Not up stairs..... man I cracked up when i read your post i know how hard you worked ...

I've been seriously thinking about maybe moving out to LA and getting a job, but i know its tough...i have a small get up now with some decent stuff, but who doesnt these days...i'm a Christian like yourself, so thats why i threw it out there...i'm actually really good at painting, but i doubt you'll need much painted, I am pretty good at building stuff, its been awhile though, when I was younger I helped my dad with a roof and finishing off our basement, haha...i was just screwing in screws and doing whatever he said to do though

I'd be willing to come in and volunteer some of my services as an intern

About to start the last half of my schooling at MI and I've done live sound and recording for over 10 years at my church back in Santa Maria.

I'm looking forward to getting a normal job in the studio instead of slaving away stocking at costco 40 hours a week (on top of my 5 to midnight schooling)

Great work by the way, I'm studying all this studio design in my acoustics class and I love seeing this stuff. By the way, you haven't mentioned, What kinda console?

Steve,

A question on the Rockwool in the ceiling: how does it not slide down? Is it just compressed a little between the studs and then the stretched fabric does the rest or did you somehow mount anything to prevent the rockwool from slipping down?

And another question: did you calculate the helmholz traps or is the wood just to get some brightness back?

Thanks, looking great!

Thanks for your intrest in my construction project

A really great way to do this is fiberglass insulation pallet banding . But i didn’t have to use that . i just made sure when i framed it that it was really close to 24"
and the panels fit great !. the cloth wont hold the 703.. i think i had a loose one or two and just used some 3 " drywall screws to hold it up . The wood trim strips will support them if they try to work loose.

As far as the walls in the bass trap .... i used furring strips on the back side of the frame so when someone leans on the wall it wont dent in .

No calculating, i just wanted some hard surface on the lower part of the wall for wear and tear.

There is a 3" layer behind the wood and the gaps are around 1 1/2" .

I really didn’t want any reflective surface there but i had to do something. I NEED to finish this studio.

If i don’t like the way that wall sounds i can angle the wood to deflect the sound back to the rear of the room. But it should be ok....

Heres a link to the strapping....

http://www.uline.com/Browse_Listing_...Poly+Strapping

use roofing nails, nail on the back side of your studs before you fill with 703.

This advice is from Knightfly at the John Sayers site.

awesome!

Totally awesome thread you guys! I built a smaller scale "room within a room" and vocal/drum rooms last year and this really made me remember my own lack of sleep during that time! I can't wait to see the final product, your doing awesome and I'd be super excited about this.

dang-I'm to go record something right now, come to think of it!! Wohoo!

Talking Console Move !!!

Here are a few shots of the console moving adventure, Everything went well even driving through snow , rain, and heavy winds !

The last few days i have been trying to finish the control room and am almost done !

I found a Lighting store that is going out of business and i got about a mile of track and a bunch of track lights for a great deal. And one Lava Lamp

So the control room lights are done. All that’s left is the flooring , doors, Window and a couple of outlets.

I am hoping to get 6 Guys over here on Thursday to lift this Monster up onto its frame.

Remember in these pics. i am not moving !! and all the boxes are Channels, faders, GML automation modules, CPUs and a ton of spare Parts Channels , faders Psu, Cards, chips, Computer , Ect..... Plus i got a stack of Schematics and diagrams 1ft tall plus original service manuals.

This will be fun to commission..... Much better than hanging drywall or wallowing in Insulation.
