Hi Steve,

I am enjoying your building very much, great work!

Just a question: it looks like you are covering the complete front, back and ceiling with a layer of 3-4" 703, covered with cloth. Is that the plan? If so, aren't you afraid of making the room too dead?
How did you calculate the amount of absorbent surface?

Thanks and good luck finishing,
Dirk

Steve, Do you remember what we did on your old studio? Instead of 703 we used fiberglass ceiling tiles, peeling the plastic covering off each one. I had fiberglass in my hair, behind my ears, other places which I won't mention.

While, I would love to be there to help you build this place, I'm sure glad I am not there now.

Yep i remember....... that stuff was the same stuff 703 I think it was 2" and I got a great deal on it from Trane because they had just removed it from some Huge building i think a school.... But yea pealing that stuff was bad...

I will be done with the control room 703 today and will post some pics later.

I have some of the cloth to start covering the traps and ceiling.

Its not over yet i still have to hang more 703 in the live room and that will be a much larger project

The front soffit will have wood on it and there will be diffusers on the back wall , the floor will be mostly wood and some wood on the lower side walls also a Huge mixing desk ,keyboards and outboard racks, I didn’t use any software to design the absorption i just went with what i have known to work before.

I can fine tune the room if I need to with some wood and diffusers

I used Mode Calk to design the room dimensions.... its a good tool and i t can be found at Ethan Winners Site.

As far as the Bass trapping you can never have to much .

I will fire up my JBL 6328 s today and check it out but i am sure it will sound GREAT!

This is going to be one of the best threads of 2006!!!

IT must sound super focused in there!

We're mounting 10 bundels of 6 (2x4) panels of the 703 in our room as we speak. That stuff is nuts!

Have fun man! I'm loving the pics

Talking Control Room Start

Well Its starting to look like a control room now .......
I have finished with the cloth and have started on the wood treatment and trim,
My friend Neal the Deal is building Diffusers and three 4 foot tall RACKS !!! Wish i needed more rack space but i have no $$$$ left for Gear
I will have plenty to get started and will add as i can afford to.

I really wanted to get more done on this room ....... I’m going to pickup my console on tuesday and should be back here on thursday .

Here are a few Pics. of the room before all the wood work is done.

The next pics will be of a console moving project !!

I am so tired............ All i need is a 3 day non stop road trip with a huge mixer that takes up a whole 17 ft truck !!!

No rest............. well i can get some sleep when i am driving g

The place is looking outstanding, thanks so much for sharing your build process with us. You seem to really know what your doing with the build, what research did you do to prepare (books, mentors, websites, etc...)? Did you use an architect to design the room or is it based on your research?

Thanks

Thanks man,

This is the second studio that i have built ,, the first one (20 years ago)was with a lot of help from close friends and musicians . we just wanted to record and didn’t really know what we were doing, but it came out really good
and is still being used as a Recording studio in Tucson.

When God put it on my heart to build this one i just used the things that worked in the last room and made them better, and the things that were a problem (i hope) i fixed.

This control room has some really awesome bass trapping and the demissions were figured out on Mode Calk. It should sound pretty flat anywhere in the room.

The live room is sounding great even with just sheetrock walls and i want to keep it as live as i can .... i will have a way to tune it depending on the sound i want.

Still have to build the drum room ,, and one iso booth.
The rest of the isolation will be done with Gobos.

Thanks so much for the interest,

steve
