I got both side walls insulated and started the on first layer of drywall.
Tonight i finished taping and mudding one wall
Tomorrow after its dry i will start on the second layer on the parti. wall !

In this pic. you can see the acoustical caulking on the bottom of the sheetrock,
Every layer gets a 1/4 " gap and acoustical caulk around all the edges. And the seams get taped .. all to make each layer air tight and so the edges of the drywall wont transmit vibrations to the other wall or ceiling, floor, ect...
(to increase transmission loss)

Just a shot of the concrete wall before the sheetrock ,
This Framed wall Is set 7" away from the existing wall and will only get one layer of sheetrock because it is 8" thick concrete ! so this will be the easy wall

The back wall where the rollup door is is also concrete and i will remove the door and fill in the space with drywall and then build another wall 12" or more away from it . im waiting till the last of the big deliveries are here to build that wall.
I also would love to have the console moved through the rollup door but the timing may not workout that way.

This doesn't look like a hobby to me! Radio Control Boating is a hobby. Making didgeridoo's on the weekend is a hobby.

This is looking great! IMO, you're blasting through the heavy-lifting part.

Thanks guys,

Yea this is not a "Hobby" for me. 15 years in the first studio and now investing enough time and money in this studio to build a nice home and just retire......
But that would be no fun would it /

This is definitely a business and i cant wait to be working with music instead of hanging drywall.

The wiring and commissioning of all the gear will be so much fun, Also getting to hear the room for the first time will be so cool.

You can never tell what a room will sound like until its done. My last live room sounded pretty good I can only hope this one will sound even better.

After I get all the big deliveries i will fill in the roll up door space with drywall. ( its a 6" concrete wall) and build another wall 12" or more away from it.
and add a double door and sound lock to the small door.
It will be where the band can park and bring there equipment in.
its a busy alleyway and kinda noisy so that wall will probably have 3 sheets of drywall. the small door will still be the weak link .

I also would love to have the console moved through the rollup door but the timing may not workout that way.

are you going to use soundboard? plywood? stagger your layers? are you caulking the seams and penetrations?

All the drywall is at least 2 layers of 5/8" with the second layer rotated so no seams line up and each layer is taped and mudded and the edges are filled with acoustical caulking.
Any penetrations will be caulked , all electrical will be surface mounted and the penetrations have been kept to a minimum.

Soundboard is a waste of money for sound proofing.
Plywood will not be used in soundproofing as sheetrock has more mass.

Acoustical treatment will be next and i will post pics of the resonators , clouds and traps as i build them.

Thanks ,

steve

hey steve,

i am no expert, but my studio designer told me that varying materials was better than using many sheets of the same. maybe you know better, i am just askin' we put up 7 layers for our booth, dywall, soundboard, plywood, dywall, etc...

Varying materials will help to keep the wall from resonating at a certain frequency so yes you are right ! thumbsup

Double wall construction with a 12" air space and 2 layers of 5/8 drywall on each side the STC should be around 68db (or more) and that is way higher than a door or a window which is the weak link in the wall. The wall is only as soundproof as the weak link.

The treatment will also help to dampen my walls and ceiling so the resonating frequency should not be a problem.

Remember what stops sound is mass air mass thumbsup

yuppers!

that is why i have soundlock. doors to studio, booth and contol room meet in one groovy place. my booth is a room within a room, and my studio is a room within a larger room. so, yes, i know about air space. i was just talking about the walls of my booth -- we didn't have the space for an air gap within those walls.

i figured you were up on stuff, i just like to know inside stuff for when i build my next one.

i built my place too -- just got detailed instructions from the designer. man! nothing better than holding dywall over your head!!

SSL 4072 G+

If all Goes well with the financing

The really HARD thing is the SSL will cost as much as a house!

I just feel the decision to go with the SSL is right because of the proven track record,
The SSL will hold its value better than other consoles(except the 80xx series Neves)
And the maintence wont be as bad as the Neve V series
(I cant afford the 80xx series)
Also I hope it will bring clients to the studio who wouldn’t come if i had a
Amek,Trident,Euphonics Ect.....

And it will fit my style of recording and mixing.

thanks for all your posts and support !

Ha HA

Hi Neil Glad you found this site, Its cool ... Lots of info and knowledgeable people.

Yea the last studio build went easier than this one mostly because of all the help from you and others who pored out there blood and sweat.

The only thing that makes this one easy at all is knowing the mistakes i made and knowing what i would have changed in the first studio.

Thanks again for all your help I think about those days allot now as i am building these rooms and starting over. I do miss you,, your help and everyone else who made the last studio something special to everyone who came there to record.

You probably know this but that old room is still being used as a studio....we built that place over 20 years ago and it is still making music.

This new room WILL sound better and i am trying to put everything i have learned in the last 25 years into it.

steve
