stevep,

Amazing, really! You should win a Gearslutz Award for keeping your work progress updated here! You seem to be extremely skilled and know a lot about construction, acoustics and recording. It's a lot of fun to look at all these pictures and the progress you make.

I have some questions, are you inspired by any studio construction in particular when you build this studio? Do you use any construction software for this project, for instance Autocad? Have you done this before or is this your first project? What kind of approach have you had when it comes the choice of buying ALL this gear? Have you owned a lot of this gear before and know it works or do you use a structured gear purchase strategy for succeeding with both the budget and the gear choice? How much of the gear have you chosen to buy second hand? Being this skilled and doing it all from scratch, in terms of spending you need to have used some kind of reference on what to spend the most on and what to not spend as much on. For instance I saw that you really did the acoustics part very thoroughly and that you really wanted an analog studio rather than a digital one. Could you please tell us a little about how you have delt with all these decisions you've made and how you have ranked the different components in regard to the importance for the final studio sound and how much the components contribute to the final sound? Have you done research about this before you started or do you just "improvise"?

Best of luck!

Glad to hear the automation is going Steve! Great job. If you aren't re-installing the OS, I have the master user and password (if you need it)

Question

Sorry it took me so long to get to your questions,

Ive been stuck inside a mixing board for the last 3 days

The design for this room came from the last studio me and my friends built 20 years ago in Tucson, I took all the good parts and tried to fix all the mistakes i made .

Quote:

The Budget ....... Blown through the roof

I was using Multi track decks before and I couldn't see starting another studio without a 24 track Studer.

I was using A degidesign DAW and MIDI software Synked to the Multi track when this stuff first came out, in the 80s we had a 128K Mac we Hot roded with a ?? meg Hard drive WOW ! and then moved to the MAc 2 with 2meg of ram and a color monitor .. that was state of the art.

So with the new set up I chose to go Mac , Pro tools HD Acell and the Apogee 16X Converters

Quote:
How much of the gear have you chosen to buy second hand?
Most all of it except for some new Mic's, Also I had allot left from the other studio.

Quote:

Yes I spent Allot on Isolation and Acoustics in the control room , live room .

All the great gear and a bad room does no good, I would rather spend more on the room now because thats something you cant go back and fix later .

You can always buy more gear to fill up the rack later.

As far as an Analog vrs Digital studio.......I think i covered both worlds pretty well unless you meant a digital mixing board.

I like the way an analogue desk makes music sound and i prefer to work on a large desk. in split format, working on building the mix from the basic tracks on.

I will mostly use Pro Tools as a tape machine and will have it synked to the Studer for most projects.

Or will start on tape and move to digital

Quote:
Could you please tell us a little about how you have delt with all these decisions you've made and how you have ranked the different components in regard to the importance for the final studio sound and how much the components contribute to the final sound?
The Tape machine, Ptools outboard gear and the desk will all work together, they are all tools for me to get the sound i want for each different project.

as far as rank....... Give me the studer, the desk, some outboard a few good Mic's and you can have the DAW !

Quote:
Have you done research about this before you started or do you just "improvise"?
This studio is a product of many years of working every day in a commercial studio seeing what works, what is needed and how i did it wrong the first time.

I'm sure i made plenty of mistakes this time to .........
only time will tell

THank you for your interest,

steve
