Community Music Workshop/Studio in Brighton...

Hello Slutz.

I'm helping out on a studio/kids music workshop/community radio station build here in Blighty. It's all being done on a shoestring budget after Network Rail evicted the owner from her last place due to it being under a bridge that needs a lot of repair. I do engineering for her when the occasional band wants a demo (her old place was more of a rehearsal space with a control room tacked on), but have specified a lot of improvements for a live room/control room that will get good results on a budget.

It's all being done with good will from people in the area; Jackie (the owner) is an intensely community focused lady and has called in a lot of favours!

So, I went down to check out the build today, which is directly under Brighton train station, two days into the build.

The space is an old coach stable, so there is a roof with arches galore, and some lovely beams that support the actual train station (obviously not ideal ).

So, without further ado....

(oh, and we still need an electrician apparently , so if anyone's a sparky and free in Brighton.... )

edit: Sorry for the blurred plan, it was laying around the site and I don't have an electronic copy. Going clockwise from the bottom left it reads: Kids' room, Rehearsal C, Rehearsal B (with stage), Rehearsal A (live room), Control Room, Radio Room. The door between the radio/control rooms is also not going to be in the final build.

If anyone has any incredible techniques for sealing the gaps between the walls and the uneven stable floor that would be awesome. I was thinking of stuffing it with rockwool in the larger gaps and then going to town with acoustic sealant caulk.

The floors are eventually going to be raised on rubber, then placed on top of pallets filled with rockwool (not my idea, but seems workable and better than nothing thumbsupthumbsup!).

Looks like a great start! How much of a noise problem will the train be?

It shouldn't be too much of a problem; once the floors are (somewhat) isolated from the structure I'm hoping it'll be fine. All of yesterday I barely noticed any train rumble at all.

Obviously the proof will be in the microphones come recording time, but fingers crossed eh!

Greetings.

A little photo update.

Things are going pretty well; behind schedule, but I think we're about to crest the hardest parts in the next few days.

Still to do:

Flooring (you can see some has been started in what will be the live room)
More panels thumbsup
Ceilings
Electrics (not us)
Decorating
Moving in.

It's going to be an interesting week
.....

GIK guys; I found out today that the traps and diffusers were ordered from you! It's good to know we're in safe hands.

Jude, I know you're here somewhere

How did it go with the studio project? I used to live in Brighton so I'm really psyched to hear how you did.
