Closely following this thread over here.

I have a strong feeling this room is going to sound and look amazing when completed. thumbsup

Brian, how closely are you following Ethan's acoustical treatment/layout suggestion?

Exactly following. I had a few ideas based on the intimate set up I wanted, and mirroring my room for the last 5 years was important.Ethan took it from there with the diffusors, etc. Ethan spent a lot of time on my every little question ... and the design was fine tuned over weeks of discussion, and the room came into shape in my head with his help.

I had the option to do less here, and that became not an option the more I thought about it. I had the option to build more than I did, and I needed it up in a shorter time than I was willing to spend with 6" of 705 in full wall frames, covered in paper or plastic or whatever.

As little as possible. We'll see what it needs. A diffusor over the desk ... that's not at the first reflections, for sure.

Here's the door, all good ... adjustable seals on all sides, and a moving seal at the bottom. (mmmm .... stain or paint?)

Actually sounds like my old room but better ... very similar size, yet much tighter on the imaging and the low end is more clear, as would be expected.
Sounds like the speakers and amp

As in any set up, moving the speakers around in small increments is key.

All around the room is even and nice. The frequency balance at the sofa is especially good, so that's good luck. The exact middle of the room, just behind me, is the only weak spot.

The low end behind the speakers, in front of the Mega Traps, is nearly non existent. It's bizarre. Those things work very well, for sure. There are no low end bumps anywhere along the walls or corners.

Looks good, Brian...

Hey, Brian :

Your construction guy can fly out to LA? This looks about what I imagine my new conversion at my house in Mt.Washington to look like...

Excellent! I should have a couple of new customers for you in the relatively near future.

I'll never forget the day I discovered just how poorly my original attempts at bass trapping were working. I sent pink noise through my monitors at 75 dB SPL measured at my mix position, then played a 75 Hz sine wave and began measuring at different spots. It measured 58 dB where my ears normally are, and just a few feet away, just behind and above midway between the speakers, it measured nearly 100 dB!

It's better now, but it took a rather prodigious amount of bass trapping.

So the room is all good, and I've been working on an amazing record. The Black Keys - 'Brothers'. Comes out May 18th internationally, CD and Double LP. Mixed by Tchad Blake. Truly amazing work by the band and Blake.

I really like the videos on the website - it really gives the visitor to the sight a good sense of who you are, your experience, your viewpoint and manner of work-flow, and what you bring to the table. Little touches like this are what really help distinguish one engineer from another, as realistically, the person doing the work is the best bit of equipment in the room.

Yes I did. It was nice to hear from old clients who were supportive of the move with the caveat that 'it's the engineer not the room'. I still know that's true, and thanks Nolan for your compliments, but this room helps me that extra bit. Been here a couple of months actually ... just updating the world with this little thread.

Thanks to Ethan Winer for all the time, and thanks to my crack crew who did the job in a hurry for a song.

Just a bump here to day that March was my best month ever, working on Sami Yusef and Jessica Lea Mayfield this week ... and having a Studio Opening Party on Thursday 13th, 5-7pm, with PBR and gourmet pizza from my fave restaurant. Playing The Black Keys 'Brothers' all through this building a few days ahead of the release with permission from the band.

Any locals who want to come by on Thursday May 13th please email:

What a great job! I am an original central Ohio guy myself (up in Kent now), so it is great to see such great builds from you and Neil in that area. Outstanding work! Also LOVE the Black Keys and their records always sound top-notch...

Just stumbled across this thread - this must have been one of the fastest build outs I've seen... Congrats on the new room!

Thumbs up

Brian, your room looks awesome, congrats (it´s my wallpaper...)

what´s your final dimensions after treatment?

Do you have some measurements or idea "+/- db deviation response"? I´m curious - you have Real Traps literally everywhere..)

Thanks Ciro

Inside of the treatments? 11' x 18.5' x 8'. I was going to measure tones but am simply too busy. Learned the room easily, tweaked the speaker placement a tad, and am on a roll ...
