I'm pretty sure it's flutter echo between the floor and ceiling. I had the same thing happen to me. Once I treated the ceiling it went away. Don't carpet the floor.

Now i'm confused again! I've been recomended wall to wall carpet, just because it absorbs high and high mid.

I will have basstraps and absorbers with rockwool for the mid and low.

Does anyone else have something to say about this? i'm about to buy wall to wall carpet next weekend.. should i not do this?

Tim

Ps. I don't mean to be rude and say that you are wrong victor! I just want an extra opinion, since i've been recomended wall to wall carpet in such a small room! sorry

ps2. Daaamn.. the room looks REALLY small on the pictures.. it's not THAT small

What kind of floor do you guys recomend? Wooden floor, but does it matter acousticly what kind of wooden floor?

Is some sort better and some worse?

The big problems are allways in the lows. That is where you need to focus.
To quote Ethan Winer, you can never have to many bass traps.
But if all the "bass traps" are broadband you'll end with a dead room. The solution would be to cover the corner traps with cardboard, just to reduce the absorbtion on the highs.
A wall to wall carpet will push you far on the road to a dead room.

Just for reference: how many pro studios have you seen with a wall to wall carpet?

Acoustically speaking there's not much of a difference between a concrete and a wooden floor, though i prefer wood (or laminate)

Tim,

What a small room needs is lots of broadband absortion:

Yes, that i know! that's why i will measure and build absorbers for the freq needed, and start with basstraps made of rockwool

What is FRK? i'm not familiar with that word! I'm planing to have HIGH density mineral wool (95kg/m) for the basstraps and cover it with textiles!
That's what the other guys on the forum have done?

I want a pretty dead room, but definatly NOT completely dead! But in that matter, i just have to listen and measure, right?

Then laminate it is! GOOD! Cause it looks better than wall to wall carpet!!

I have another question for you! The clouds will be pretty hard to make, since i'm pretty tall (192cm) and the height is only 213cm. Is it okay with foam-clouds? If i build everything else by my self with right kind of isolation for the right freq, do you think the foam in the ceiling would make it bad? Got any suggestions?

Thanks ALOT again victor! tell me if youre coming to sweden, then i'll buy you a couple of beers

For 2-6" the common recomended material is about 50kg/m³. When thicker than 6" less denser material should be used (and not denser).

If you want to use foam try to get basotect 5cm or better 7cm thick.

I'll take that beer gladly - but if you hapen to come to germany, feel free to come by. It's always a pleasure to have a beer with a fellow gearslutz.
Basotect.. that's new to me.. will check! 7cm is no problem at all, then i even have some space left for my head when standing! :D

I've got Event 8" monitors as my primary monitors, so i'll go with less density for the basstraps then! Good to know =) Less density = cheaper, so that's good news

Maybe we'll have some gig in germany in future, i'll warn you in good time

Hey!

I've had kidneystones and when i came back from the hospital i had a 2weeks flu.. veeery nice! In other words, not so much work done..

the things i HAVE done is.

Found the right floor! Drilled the air holes in the walls and the strips so the concrete walls can breathe. layed the floor and "installed" the strips on floor and ceiling!

Some pics of what i've done =)

Haha.. it will be large white absorbers on the wall, so it won't be so much of the wallpaper left! I have it in my head, you'll see later.. i hope.. otherwise is just to paint the wall

Take care!

Heelloowww!

The room is all finished, and now i'm building the wall absorbers! But here's the problem!

I've been searching and searching for a insulation that has the density of 45kg/m3. But i can't find anything!

i've found glasswool with 35kg/m3

is it true that stonewool/mineralwool works almost as good if you double the density? Because i think it will be easier to find a density near 90kg/m3 with stonewool/mineralwool...

This is hard as hell here in Sweden! We don't have owens corning 703 :/ And they don't send to europe!

What to do? Is 35kg/m3 almost as good as 45kg/m3? I don't want it to be half-good.. i want to make the studio sound as good as i possible can!

advices needed thumbsupstike

Thanks alot!

hmm.. can't find anything about gasflow resistance :/
0,033 W/m·°C ?!

don't know what parameters or numbers to look for

I've now called all the different insulation distributors in Sweden, and i've found an insulation with the density of 51kg/m3.

I have ordered it since it's the nearest density i can come to 45kg/m3.

Really hope it's good enough!

Thank you!

Hi Tim,

Looking good, if you can afford to get superchunks in behind the rockwool traps you're making. It seems like you've got most things sorted, I think it's going to sound ok in there when you're done.

Look forward to seeing the final result!

Thank you! =)

I'm now almost finished with the superchunks! It's only some final touch to make them look better!

I made them 40cm deep (15,75") And i have to say that the superchunks made a HUUUUGE difference!

i think i will do the measure part tomorrow, but i have to learn HOW first

i will post some pictures soon!

Thanks for your reply's!
