Shipping Container Studio

Hey Guys,

I have been working in a larger studio about 30mins from my home and have been looking for a way to do some mixing at home without the neighbours going crazy!

In the end i decided to build a small mix room with a vocal booth in a shipping container next to my house.

So i've been a busy beaver and over the past few weeks have been building......


This is the space where the Container will go.



This is the container going in that space.





This is not good!!!!!




The floor is two layers tongue and groove flooring.
Here we have the first frame and insulation going in.
you can see the start of the second frame sitting there.
There is three layers of plaster board going on one frame with two more on the next! we don't want any sound leaking out!


I will update this tomorrow with more pictures as I'm a little further along...

Awesome Dude, I set a thread up about this a while back as I wanted more information on how to do this. Please take as many photos as possible and would love to get more info and how you went about this and how it sounds.

There will be a split air con system feeding into the control room with a link through to the Booth

I take it your local zoning ordinances are in a whole 'nother universe than those around here. You can't even park a motor home in your backyard around these parts.

It's a cool idea. How portable will it be when done?

Now this is fascinating.. was one reason for choosing a shipping container so that it could be moved fairly easily if you move house?

One thing I thought.. without a concrete base, are you not worried that over time it might start to tilt?

(and yeah I think getting planning permission for this in the UK would also be a long process)

I'm planning to do the same in a 40ft container but out in Africa so I'm very interested in how this ends up looking and sounding. It would also be nice to see how you link up the air conditioner.

AS it's not a permanent structure i don't need a planning permit (or so i've been told) I spoke the the company that sells the containers and they came and looked at the ground and let me know that it won't sink.

It is about .5degrees from level. we did have a place set than was level but when they backed the truck in they dug up some of the ground!

The plan is that it will be completely portable.
All the power will actually come from 2 extension cords that run into it's own fuse box. It will also have it's own grounding poles out back.

So you're studding in one wall with drywall and then studding another wall with drywall on top of that? Wouldn't that create a triple leaf?

Hey mate in places it forms a triple leaf and in some places it's a quadruple leaf. A triple leaf actually has better mid and high frequency sound proofing with a drop in the lower end we felt that as I monitor at average levels and am not recording any drums. the mid frequencies (Like a guitar cab) are what i need to keep down. Also I have been told that as the Shipping container itself is a very poor "leaf" it's effect is quite negligent...

Did you see the one that a guy in QLD built... Sparky Studios....the John Sayers Website has some info on it...he recently sold it...

Remark: He sold it to build a new one. He added a second container with a recording room. Now he is planing a container with a bigger control room. He no longer needed the integrated booth.

It would be interesting to know the cost of building a decent studio in a container.
Not the gear, just the interior.
