The best of both worlds.. Hello all, we started today to renovate the rehearsal space/studio into a real small studio for recording mainly acoustic music, on 2" 24 track and digital. First batch of pictures, putting in a French oak floor, used but for free! Also you see some cork panels on the wall, plan is to cover all walls with 2" of cork. Any comments or recommendations are more then welcome. Best regards, Willem

Hai Willem, Yer from the Netherland, not? So euhm, what's with the cork? Why would you cover all walls with cork? It doesn't reduce transmission loss, it doesn't absorb. On of the pix show a panel in front of the window, why? is it for isolation purposes? What is that material. Got plans? (a floor plan maybe?)

| Hi there, I see you have layed the wood directly onto the excisting stone floor with only a thin layer between it. Have you thougt about this before, cause I think this will give a lot of contact sound. Succes met bouwen. Greetz, Paul

Adding the new floor on the existing one if fine. You don't wanna pretend to make it float. The isolation is pure for thermal purposes and make it less squeaky. Since your floor is tiled on, probably?!, a concrete floor your save. Concrete doesn't flank that easy. It's the wooden floor that'll do the flanking. But, if it's just one room it's nothing to worry about. The only thing I could think of that should be trouble, is the (now) noticable resonating of the floor.

I should have mentioned that this is the control room we are working on. It's a free standing building of roughly 100 m2 or 1100 square foot. The main floor is of concrete, 2m or 7 foot thick, used to be a support for heavy machinery in the passed. We checked the level of the floor tiles and it was done very well that's why we use this thin alu foil coated foam just for leveling the differences in the surfaces of the tiles. The cork panels we are going to use are there for 2 reasons: thermal insulation and for the acoustic absorption. In each corner we will put a bass trap and, if necessary we will add reflective panels when the room turns out to be too dead sounding. Will post a rough sketch of our plans later.. Willem. And yes I am Dutch....

Ha die Willem :) The cork, thrash it and get some "real" absorbers. You got the cork for free I suppose? It'll make a better floor instead. Speaking of which, with a "hard" floor like that you also need a "soft" ceiling. 2m thick concrete? WOW! that's GREAT for a tracking space, let alone a CR. Good stuff!

Just a VERY rough sketch to get the idea. I will stick to the cork, because we do not glue them to the wall, they fit snugly between the 2"x2" battens on the wall, will secure them with 0,75" x 5" wood. If it doesn't work we can cover them with other material to keep the thermal insulation. We are very close to the river and it get's very chilly in the evening, not to mention the winter.... Willem.

I love the looks of your wooden floor. I want to do something similar in my basement studio but I'm not sure how... I've put wood floor in our house but I use those thin cheap wood floors that's easy to install. We call them "click floor" in Sweden. But they don't look and feel as nice as real "heavy/thick" wood floor. Very nice.

Thanks, we got it for free, it's 18mm massive French oak and I guess it was expensive as hell. The stuff you mention is called laminate and is mostly a thin layer of wood on top. Used a lot in houses over here, looks good and easy to maintain. Willem.

Small update. Some more floor went in due to the big help of Big John, as well one of the four racks I bought for €25 a piece, brand new 16 RU slanted rack out of a DAP tour case. No good for touring but good enough to bolt them together and finish the top and sides with birch plywood. Willem.

We have an enclosed room! Hello all, last Monday we finally made it into a room. Got some solid doors from the Metropole, thanks again, I already have their multi core audio cables a while ago....lots of them. OK new batch of pictures, including 1 finished bass trap, covered with some off white fabric. The whole back wall will be a bass trap, yeah! Enough small talk, pictures. Regards, Willem.
