The frequency looks good, but how are the more important measurments? ETC? Waterfall? cheers Mika |

I will make some more detailed measurements this week and send them to my acoustician so we can use up the remaining space on the back wall to resolve the 120 and 150hz and after that we can finally move to the live room. Lots of work there .... don't even except to have it done before the end of the year ...

I am about to pick up the four new 16U rack bays this afternoon so the control room is really getting together finally. I picked up the MW-1 studio tool from the customs it was a nightmare as always I have also purchased a new amp - laboga mr. hector. I am starting a new session so finally I can try it out |

| Lives for gear | I took some pictures of the control room and from the today reamping session. The Laboga amp kicks ass, finally I had the opportunity to use it on a record. We preffered the laboga over the bogner uberschall together with the band. Ended up using 2 heads - the laboga and the dual recto. The condenser mic on the cab wasn't used in the final tracks just the 57 and 421. The MW-1 is a wonderfull unit and a must have for everybody who's doing a lot of guitars. And finally some pics of the control room that is starting to look like a control room I have noticed that I am using much more reverb after adding the side wall QRD diffusors then before. With around 80% of the acoustic treatment installed it's a real pleasure mixing here |

Crazy last couple of days, finished 3 records, started mixing another one and I have a 5 day tracking session ahead .... so as you can guess the construction part is progressing really slowly. The only thing I have managed to do in the past couple of days is to remove the cloth grille from my mesa oversized cabinet so I can see clearly where the mic is pointing at, trying to perfect my guitar tone now that I have the option to reamp the tracks The laboga amp is insane, the project where we used it will go to mastering this week so I will post some samples once mastered. I have finally managed to do a set of measurements for the last part of acoustic treatment before we can call the CR done. (just a slight 4 months of delay ), you can see the freq response, rt60 and the waterfall graphs. We will try to tame the decay in the 100-200hz region otherwise it's pretty much the best you can do with a room of that size. d. |

Hi David I think there is a lot of room for improvements in your room. You should realy work on the modal ringing, and with the speakerposition to get a better response. there is not much below 80hz and i am shure you can get a much better result with some small changes. Don`t give up. You can do it!!! I would be happy to help you with the last tuning. cheers Mika |

| In floor heat / Focals
Thanks for taking the time to post all of this, it is truly appreciated. The sample track you posted sounds great too! You mentioned in one of the early posts (sorry I joined late) something about heating the floor, did you put in some kind of in floor heating? Sorry if I missed this earlier. Also now that you've had some time to work with them, how do you like the Focals? |

| I have one! Seems your Twins are pretty close to your console, did you try putting them vertical with the midrange driver on the bottom? (you can select that from the rear switch) The Twins in vertical position will have better horizontal vs. vertical dispersion and you'll hit the console and ceiling differently so it might totally change your response. in a recent install where the engineer had a small studio in a basement, changing the horizontal vs. vertical positioning made a lot of difference. It might not necessarily work but you should give it a shot. (tweeters on the outside) Let me know how it goes! Simon @ Focal |

Beowulf: the heating in the building is like this 1) studio (control and live room) are heated via HVAC 2) the rest of the house (lounge, kitchen, bathroom and accomodation) is heated with the electric floor heating. If you go back in this thread you can see some pics of the cables before they were burried in concrete. The focals are really amazing monitors. The midrange is killer and the tweeter is very pleasing to my ear - I was always struggling with the adams as I felt they are too harsh for me. The twins incredibly improved the quality of my work, I am planning to add a sub6 because for the music I do at most often I really need to hear all the subbass notes. Simon - thanks for the tips I'll try them out. Hands down your products are top notch |

You should demo them definitely, monitors are a thing of personal preference, you either like them or not. and good luck with the build |

Simon, I did the changes you suggested and It worked )) I have put the monitors to vertical position and tried both options regarding which woofer is reproducing bass and measured every option. I got the best results with the top woofer used for bass. The bass resposne is much more present and fuller, I still have to do some more measurements while varying the distance from the back wall.

| Lives for gear | Finally building my new place !!!!
A long time has gone since my last post ... Finally we have managed to finish all the acoustics in the CR. Once the wooden trims are installed then we can call it done and proceed to the live room. I have the second load of the CR cabling on the road, so we will rack up the rest of the equipment and wite the spakon patchbay for the guitar cabs and amps. Last month I have managed to buy a CAD megamix VCA automation system - the one that installs into the board, 32 channels, just right for my D&R We will start the installation tomorrow. Today we have fired up the old mac and the APU unit to see if it has survived the transport, gladly everyting works. We will have to pull out each module from the console, install the 4 circuit boards, wire the faders to the automation modules and then set up timecode sync between logic and the megamix software. More pics tomorrow

So we started the installation of the CAD megamix VCA automation to my board. We took out all the modules, installed the circuit boards to the console (4 boards, each handles 8 faders), racked the APU unit and currently we are installing the modules back to the console - we have to rewire the channel and fader connectors to incorporate the megamix system. I have also decided to change the layout of the console, untill now I had 24 modules on the left and 8 on the right, now it's 16 on both sides. We have already 10 channels up and running, 22 to go ![]() Here are some pics, enjoy )

Finally I had some time to further tune the control room. I took the time and played with the speaker positions while measuring each spot and trying to find some relations between the positions and measurements data. The heigth of the speaker does almost nothing to the respone, just minor changes, I have my speakers vertically with the top driver doing the bass as Simon@focal suggested. When the lower driver is selected to play bass I got a nasty dip at around 500hz that I suggest are the reflections from the console. As it was seen on the previous measurements there was a hole at around 80-90 hz so the goal was to reduce this as much as possible. Doing the various measurements I quickly notices that this dip is in relation with the distance of the speaker from the front wall. the bigger the distance between the speakers and the front wall the smaller the dip was - we have pulled the console back a couple of centimeters and ended up with the speakers 64 cm from the front wall and the 90 hz dip virtually dissapeared. So this must be IMHO the front to back room mode (90hz is roughly 4 meters) while my CR is around 4,5 meters. So I wrote down the best position for the speakers and we set them up in a triangle with my mix position. Did a quick listening test and as expected the bass was pretty intense and again much more focused compared with the previous speaker position. I am really thinking about changing the back corner bass traps before we put on the finishing wood trims. Now I have some hangers in the corners (a'la john sayers) that have a pretty broadband nature. I local slovak company makes theese resonators Rezonator it's most efficient between 80 and 125 hz that covers my front to back problem so I am really thinking about ordering those two and building them into the soffits instead od the hangers. |
