Then again, you've go the whole live room as a chamber! You ARE putting some great playback speakers in there, aren't you, Greg?

I was over last week, the place is looking & sounding great.

We'll be installing some decent playbacks, with much better fidelity than most of the speakers in "the great" chambers.

Which isn't saying much, actually. The best "real'" chambers I've seen (Capitol, Fantasy, Cello) use ratty old things with similar-grade mics. It's more about the actual chamber physics/mojo and what you don't hear than the fidelity of the actual transducers, IMHO. Which is why I shy away from doing the real thing; I mean, I'm no Les Paul or Bill Putnam... (but maybe our designer is...)

But that said, we can wheel any set of speakers and mics into any area of the building, and make that area a chamber at any time with connectivity.

And, thanks for stopping by, Paul. I really appreciate it.

That's a strange thing. I've "owned" that console now for nearly 2 years, but I've never done a session on it! The last session that saw signal through it was scoring "WALL-E." And it has been in storage since then...

Considering its initial value, and the huge number of giant film scores and great engineers that have used it, it was a relative bargain.

But, sometimes, when the pile of cables becomes overwhelming, I wonder if I shouldn't have gotten something with a single firewire cord instead.

Then I come back to my senses.

I just had to quote this - a very appropriate statement, not just for building studios, but for life in general.

Knot the door, I'm coming (!?)

Kudos to Greg for sharing the adventure.

I have to say that this is a truly uplifting sight!

(BTW: funny, reading on the backside label of the plate reverb that it's being manufactured some 30 mls away from where I live..)

Wow! My architect is so visiting this thread!!!

:-D i'm building my studio too. But hell, the console alone is more than what i'm spending. The demolition just finished.

Congratulations!!!!

Thanks for all if the kind words. It really does mean a lot.

We are nearing the end, now, and it is finally starting to look and sound like a real studio. Actually, it sounds fantastic. Glorious. Kudos to Jay Kaufman and his design and acoustic expertise.

The last week has been spent detangling the patchbay and finishing acoustic tuning, as well as making fabric frames, picking and ordering carpet, toilets, sinks, countertops, etc.

The wood floor for the stage should be going in late next week. So, the change will be quite dramatic.

I'll have some pics of the partially completed walls up soon. The woodwork and color palatte are looking great.

Some iPhone pics to bring us up to date. I apologize for the quality; my Canon G9 battery was dead.

48-channel Neve cue mixer, soon to get a new cabinet:

Fabric finally going in the stage walls.

I wish, I wish, I wish... I could drop by for a personal tour. But since I'm living in The Netherlands, and I'm not planning on going to The USA in the near future, I have to do it with the nice pictures you are showing us.

I wish I could make a studio like that, but I don't think I ever will be able to do that, or something really strange needs to happen first, like writing a song that becomes the best selling song ever (like that is ever going to happen), or I have to win some big jackpot in the lottery (like that is ever going to happen)...

Good luck with your amazing studio!

just a question, shouldn't there be some 703 or something behind those fabric pannels?

When there is enough space for the sound waves to move around in full wave, you can get away with just diffusion in majority of the places, without having to resort to huge absorbtion. As the place gets smaller, diffusion starts playing against you so all you can do is absorb in order to stop waves.

Yup. We're using the same principle at Manifold Recording, but with a twist. Our diffusor panels on the East Wall will be reversible, so that one can tune the room from an RT60 of 1.0 sec to an RT60 of 0.5 sec.
