| Lives for gear | My home studio in progress
It took me most of the summer but I sectioned and framed off a 40' x 50' area. Now, most of the drywall is finished. Here are a few shots of the mess. One home studio/basement project for your viewing:

The deal was that I could build a studio if the rest of the space was usable for friends and family. It took my wife and I about a month to design the whole area. We had about 2400 sq. ft. to work with. We estimated that for contractors to do the work, the cost to me would be around $80,000. Since I'm doing most of the work myself (except the plumbing, I know I don't know enough about plumbing, and the partial drop ceiling), the cost, when all is finished, will be between $20-$25,000. Not bad for a studio and living area. Another thing I'm doing is setting up the main tracking room with removable 703 panels. If my calculations are correct, and so far they seem to be on, that room will have a nice natural reverb-think small room setting on a Lexicon--that I will be able to somewhat adjust through the addition and removal of sound absorption/reflection panels. It seems like a lot of work for a non-commerical home studio that will only take limited outside work, but I love doing this. I don't know if I'll ever be as good at recording as I am at playing, but heck, I'm over 50 and this is what I do when I'm not working. It's pure fun at this point in my life. | |

Here are updated pics. The control room and small tracking room are nearly complete. There is no noise issue with the track lighting or hi hats in either area. I added a quick shot of the bead board I'm using in other parts of the basement. Damn, this is a lot of work, but since I have the skills to do most of this myself I am looking at an estimated savings of $40,000 for the basement and studio so far. I also build a removeable floor to cover the carpet in the small tracking room should I ever wish to change the room acoustics. It is in 5 interlocking sections, 2x9 feet, 1/2" thick plywood, and can be assembled by one person in about 15 minutes. I have on order 2" thick 703 panels for future use. Ack, two of my pics don't want to upload!! I'll try those two later. |

Almost complete. I don't have the acoustic trapping up yet, but it is useable. The tracking room is full of junk until I can get my other storage space squared away. This is pretty much it. The bookshelf will be removed to another room. The long shot is the rest of the basement--needs the finishing work, but looking good. Man, I'm sore! But saved a lot of $$$. |
