Don't forget the vapor barrier at the exterior walls.

They will put "Tyvex" or something similar on the outside underneath the siding, is that what you mean?

I was thinking foil faced insulation or poly on the inside.

Tyvek is not a vapor barrier (it lets air pass thru).

Yes, we are putting plastic on the insulation side of the outside wall if we use blow-in insulation (not quite sure yet), or, if we're using R-19 it will have the facing on it.

Oh yeah, warmer climates (less harsh winters) the vapor barrier goes on the outside (I could never remember that)

I'm on the fence on blow in insulation for vertical walls, (even recycled denim) and no matter what the manufacturers say there has to be some settling. Especially if you have some significant low frequencies happening

Not so much new construction more old destruction. Uninstalled the Sonys today making space for the SSL which is now announced for next Tuesday.

Amazing how many wires can pile up in 8 years...

That is actually where the name came from. I'm wondering if I should give the new studio a new name

The black stuff is weedblock. The new studio is going to have the same wall covering, but because of the acoustic panels, there will not be as much wall visible.

I decided to stain the concrete in the tracking room (picture is a first draft), If i don't like it down the line, I can always do wood later.

Weedblock? How did you come up with that idea?

A stained VU for the concrete? Awesome...

Such a oversized real VU connected to your 900+ would be eyecatcher!

The VU with the needle in the red is actually the Double Trouble Productions, Inc. company logo (same as my avatar). It probably would have a carpet over it most of the time, but I still think it could look cool.

Wolf came up with the weedblock idea, and a bunch of studios have already copied it. We tried all kinds of of different themes for the walls, but nothing really worked. This one looks RnR to me and it gives a great mood for recording. It does eat up a lot of light, though.

Dumb question - is the weed barrier flammable? You have to be careful putting fabrics on the wall.

Yes. On the walls we have one layer of weedblock right on the drywall, which gives it that nice structure, but it doesn't do anything for the sound. On the front wall (to the right of the console in the picture) we have 3 layers holding in the insulation, it's a "soft" wall.

I did some fire tests and even though the stuff doesn't go up in flames, especially when glued to drywall, it still melts slowly when holding a flame to it. So, I guess the new studio is getting a different look after all, thanx again for the tip thumbsup

Not to mention the fumes? When I was younger I used to catch my old guitar picks on fire cause they went up so fast... then someone told me those fumes are very poisonous and could damage one's nose and lungs in unknown ways

Hey Michael, that SSL looks AWSOME at Wireworld! I wish I could get the budget for one myself. As it is, I still can't find an affordable solution for replacing my Sony.

Looks like you still have the Adams set up in surround- how would the AWS handle 5.1 stuff? Not that there's much of it anymore, but still.

Hey I noticed Michael used pvc to run under the slab. Have you guys heard of the "dielectric" effect that cables are not supposed to sit on plastic? I am pouring concrete next week and am wondering I can't afford copper pipes to run all my audio to and fro so what else would one use? Is the gray pvc any different from the white?
someone help me with the "dielectric" effect?
sam

Hi Sam, I wouldn't worry about dielectrics with PVC (poly-vinyl-chloride) pipes. I've got several of those running 35 feet from my control room to my machine room, and back to my racks, with every kind of cable you can imagine in them ( analog and digital cables, video, word clock, optical, VGA, lots of CAT 5/6). No RF or dielectric effects from any of them.

The difference between the colors is that usually the grey ones are "schedule 80", which are much more heavy duty than the white PVC, which I think are called "schedule 40".

I had to use the more expensive schedule 80 pipes in my studio, because where I live we have to use post-tension slabs for concrete foundations, because of the shifting soil.

They make a specific pvc conduit (the heavier grey).

Copper in the slab wouldn't be a good thing

You must have been playing extremely fast for the pick to catch on fire

It is still going to be a 5.1 setup with the Adams and a set of NHT M00s with a M20 sub as alternate speakers. The SSL handles 5.1 monitoring very well, can switch between a few different 5.1 speaker setups and even got built in bassmanagement and downmix capabilities. It has 4 different 5.1 external inputs (to listen to external sources) and provides an insert for a Dolby encoder. The actual mixing will happen in Nuendo in that case, because the panning in the console is not really setup for 5.1. We were listening to some surround stuff yesterday, sounds great. So there will be a M&K LFE-4 for sale...

I am keeping the rear rack and most of the front console for the new place, but will have to cut the front sides in half, it would be too wide the way it is set up now. We are going to build a new center section that will house the SSL (no feet), the MC Pro with two 24" monitors, sunk into the desk, and all the remotes for reverbs etc. There will also be space for the main computer (in the Iso box underneath) and some of the outboard gear. I just bought an X-Rack with 8 dynamic channels (there will be a second one with 8 E-series dynamics) and those will most likely live in the front "towers".

BTW, did you notice that your "feeling" button made it onto the new console

Wow, I might be interested in that as a backup - I'm on my second one now because the first one inexplicably stopped working correctly last year. Fortunately, I have a good friend who sold me his. But before that, I got one of those Blue Sky Bass management controllers, but it's not as quiet as the LFE-4, and creates a hum in the sub channel that nothing would get rid of.. Maybe I'll sell that and put that money toward your LFE-4.

If you have a problem with HUM in the subwoofer, and it is caused by the Blue Sky BMC, send me an e-mail (include the serial number), and we will see if we can get this fixed for you. pascal@abluesky.com

Sorry for any inconvenience this has caused.

Cheers!

On the backside of the building is a nice deck, right off the kitchen of the main house (lounge), that's where the grill is going to live. The photo is from when the studio was still in planning
