If you look closer, you will see that black polymer stripe in between the two plates, which is used as a decoupling material, interfacing between the hanger itself and the rail clip system. See the red arrow.

The hanger goes through the top metal plate (without touching it) to the bottom metal plate (pointed by green arrow) to which it is fixed. It is facing downwards. The top metal plate (blue arrow) clips into the rail system from over the bottom one. Therefore, this way the load of the ceiling is indeed put on the polymer which rests on the bottom plate (green arrow): it's decoupling.

BUT those are not as efficient as Sylomer or spring based systems. And for a good reason: because it is simply not needed. Darius's studio is a bunker design (self-standing massive box in a box design), whose only surface which is in contact with the rest of the building is the bottom of the 30cm thick concrete sub-structure (see first pages).

This concrete sub-structure is interfaced / separated from the building's original concrete slab by a decoupling polymer, calculated to provide an effective decoupling frequency of just under... 10Hz. The ceiling is hanged from the outer shell which rests solely on this decoupled sub-structure.

Which means that the whole studio cannot be subject to external parasite vibrations - including the ceiling. So, no theoritical need for particular 'acoustic' ceiling hangers, but to be thourough, we still put those - which are already providing way more than we actually need.

EDIT: actually the model used is the version interfacing between upper rail and lower rail network. So, same as if with only a single rail network - but they are not interfacing with the hangers themselves but with the first rail network (top one, same-same though, see second picture).
I completely understand your solution now e. I didn't saw that polymer. Realy nice job.

Cheers.

Mike

Hi Darius,

Congrats on your new studio construction - it looks like it is going to be a great place! It sure must be an exciting time your have right now.

I hope everything turns out as you plan - it did for us - we finished our new studio earlier this year...

All the best

I'm super-stoked at the progress so far! Looks like I'll be making a trip across the pond to check this little bad-boy out when she's done!

Darius, I may have missed it - what are the dimensions of the finished room (ceiling height, width, length)?

Visible net dimensions (so what one sees when standing in the studio):

Min "visible" width 4.40m (front @ start of FTB)
Max "visible" width 7.00m
Max "visible" length 7.40m
Min "visible" height 2.60 (front @ start of FTB)
Max "visible" height 3.20m

Effective net surface of mastering studio: 41.9m².

Inner hard shell boundaries dimensions (FTB geometry boundaries):

Min width 4.40m (front @ start of FTB)
Max width 7.80m
Max length 8.99m
Min height 2.87 (front @ start of FTB)
Max height 3.42m

Inner shell net surface: 57m²

Outter shell net surface: 70.4m²

This is a complex Front To Back shaped room, hence usual "room" ratios formula are not relevant by any means.

Construction of the massive bass trap at the back of the room has started, but we're going to be keeping that one under the radar, so the next update after this might take a few days.

60cm?

Make it 100cm to 180cm, membranes, tuned.

(PS: I think maybe you're confusing the pile of insulation in the first picture with the bass traps, which are not shown in the pics?)

Hi Darius

Wish you the best of luck with your project. I built my own studio too, about 7 years ago. Took me about 2 years to complete but was worth all the effort.

Hi Mischa,

I asked the contractor when he'd be finished, but all i got was a long, demonic laugh with lots of reverb!
