PONY MUSIC's new Music Complex is currently under construction in Hallam (Melbourne, Australia) (200 metres from our current location!). The 945m2 complex will include: Large Retail Showroom (2 x floors), Production Office / PA Room, 6 x Rehearsal Studios, Recording Studio Live Space and Control Room, Kitchen and Lounges etc. Completion date = sometime end of April 2008!!

Cheers all.. Ceiling beams went on half the place yesterday and plastering has started today. I'll post some more photos and information on the construction and materials used etc shortly as things progress.. Just working out the Electrical and Air-Conditioning stuff at the moment - big task while trying to keep the rest of the business running also!!

Some latest photos from today, first row of plaster started.. ceilings in 4 x rehearsal studios on and half of one rehearsal studio walls on. There is foam wedged between the floor and ceilings on all plaster to keep them isolated from walls/floor/ceiling etc. waiting on ceiling beams to roof the rest of the place and also on insulation between the walls. And yes we're also waiting on getting the fire hose reel moved (tonight) because it's not much use behind the wall!!

New woven style insulation - I'll post specs and type etc shortly!



Roof/Ceiling is constructed with 2 x layers of beams - one for the internal ceiling and one for the roof capping. Once beam sits on the internal wall and one sits on the external wall - the basic "box within a box" concept.



All plaster is sitting on rubber strip around the base and a foam beading between walls and ceiling sheets. 16mm Firecheck plaster plus BarrierBoard plaster will be added will go on top (extra levels will be added to the recording studio and control room.

Rest of the ceiling beams delivered and ready to go up next week.. Insulation next before outer walls are plastered then barrierboard added as well.

some more updates.. a bit slow this week as they were waiting for roof beams. Noiseblok insulation also delivered and ready to install.

Also just realised there weren't any photos of the showroom/office space up yet after a few people have asked.. so here 'tis. Nothing fitted out yet. 2 levels of showroom and office space each floor with bathroom, kitchenette and office. You enter front of building into middle level. Downstairs is entry to rehearsal/recording facilities (or entry groundlevel at side via roller doors) large kitchen/lounge, bathrooms and large Production / PA Office area and storage.

The major Im talking to is kind of pushing me to go to Melbourne to record material for them, if I decide to go that route I assume Id have my choice of studios so hopefully you guys are up and running soon. Plus just made a thread about your awesome store in the Aussie section.

yeah +1...what are the absorption figures on this type of insul?
Also noticed your plasterboards are resting on foam (or rubber, can't remember) strips to isolate them from the concr. slab...what are the stud frames floating on?

sorry, been a bit busy to update.. I'm waiting on absorption figures on the Noiseblok so once I get the data I'll add that also for those interested!

The plaster is sitting on foam rubber which is basically to seal the gap between the plaster and floor. Each wall is isolated from each other and the amount of sound pressure required to go through one wall, the concrete floor and into the next wall is so great we haven't "floated" the walls - however the flooring will be floated. It's a bit of a different way of building than the "old school" way and we are putting a lot of faith into our "Noise Control" specialist who is project managing the construction!!

Sorry all I'm still waiting on the data for the Insulation material. I have seen it and it beats all other materials (rockwool, acoustisorb etc) in terms of acoustic efficiency etc.. I will post the info as soon as I get it!!

The Electricians get a start:
There is only ONE penetration into each studio for electrical wiring and then all wiring is run internally within the room via conduit and mounting blocks etc. This is to minimise holes in the walls and sound leakage. There will also be one penetration for data cabling and one for air conditioning only.

Dayum, that's one HUGE complex...

Flat out last week and this week painting - working around electrician and carpenters laying the flooring. moving steadily along!!

Rehearsal Studio flooring - acoustic underlay, one layer of chipboard, one layer of yellowtongue.. floor covering still to go on top..


Rehearsal Studio painting.. patching some dodgy plastering as we go! 2 plasterers were fired!!


First coat of paint on hallway, lighting goes in..


Last minute changes - we decided to move the entry door to the recording studio lounge due to the floating floor and ramp..


hmm is that a kitchen sink or a paint cleaning setup?


Flooring is laid throughout rehearsal hallway, each studio doesn't touch the hallway flooring, rubber strips added in between also.


Rehearsal Studio lighting... 2 switches, one with fluoros for working light and 4 x dimmable wall lights for more mood lighting in a creative environment.. final coat of paint goes on..


350+ litres of paint!! 3 coats (1 x undercoat, 2 x topcoats!) that's a lot of painting!!


Yesterday and today, undercoat and first coat went on the Recording Studio Live room, lounge and control room.. needs to be done by Monday as the floor is starting to be laid then in the recording area.

Is that a electric socket under the aircon blower? If the firebrigade here see that we can close that room directly... Its forbidden in france to build/install a powersocket under a aircon blower or 1meter next to it. Something about condensation...
