I'll tell you. Word on the street is that it's Michael Tiemann, a VP at Red Hat.

I knew it had to be some rich guy's hobby. A two million dollar studio out in the middle of Chatham County in North Carolina? There's no way anyone is going to make back his investment operating a studio around here, unless CLA or Rick Rubin is manning the desk.

I can stop feeling bad about it now. I thought it was some middle-class schlub who had sunk his life savings into it. Two million is like chump change to someone like Tiemann.

Clueless, I wish you well with this and hope that you are making music by the end of the year. Bearing in mind your background, are you engineering into the place an Internet Session ability where collaborators might deliver data to you quickly/ remotely if they cannot make it in person?

Also I was wondering if you had considered the API Vision over the Legacy?

Are you also looking to be tonally flexible from a hardware point of view (e.g. Neve/Helios/Focusrite/Chandler/EMI Preamps etc) as well as having a very flexible and controllable environment? Or am I a bit ahead of your thought processes (which I somehow doubt :-) )

Best regards

Andy

Yes, I'll have access to up to 1Gbps fiber to the facility, though I'll probably only turn on 10Mbps or 100Mbps to start.

The Vision is an awesome console. But I'm going to start simple.

The control room will be wired such that with the magic of ELCO connectors, we can connect one or two 48 input/48 output credenzas in a matter of minutes. In my control room renderings I've got 14U of credenza space allocated to Neve porticos, just because the Neve images were easy to put into my program. Ditto API racks (but that's totally redundant with the console--it's just 3d graphics at this point). I'm sure there will be lots of great outboard gear as time goes by.

But I'm very interested to see just how far I can go with a simple setup: a great room, a great mixing environment, and a great console. To quote somebody else's signature: great records have been made with less.

New website and new photos

I just pushed out a new version of my website...that's construction of a sort!

I also have some new photos. Here's a series of five pictures showing the progression of block laying:

I don't know if the pictures do them justice--in the field these blocks are beautiful!

Hi,

i spent some time on your blog and thought about your concept last night.
i dig it and wish you a lot of success.
will co-producers be the only thing financing the session ?
what can be the other incomes you rely on ?

Thanks! The "co-producer" model is what will drive the part of the business I call "The Miraverse". Straight-ahead studio bookings (whether by labels, artists, production companies, etc.) will drive the part of the business I call "Manifold Recording". These are two names for the same facility. (It's a little bit like Toyota and Lexus being two different brands for the same cars.)

Some staff will be better suited to supporting The Miraverse, others for Manifold Recording, and some will do either independent of format or marketing.

I hope that makes sense...and I hope I can do a better job of explaining that on the website itself--that's what I'll be working on for the next version of the site.

You have given a name to the direction I'd love to take my studio. Great work, and great definition of your vision.

Tons of new pictures

I was away for the past two weeks, but I took a bunch of photos this morning to catch you all up on the progress. If you want to go straight to the post, click here.

Here's a picture not on the blog that shows the progress in negative space--all the pallets that have been removed from stock because they're in (or will soon be in) the walls:

And here's another (not on the blog);

Enjoy!

More progress...now up to the fourth course, mostly

I've just reported another week's worth of progress on my blog.

Here are some images that are just for you:

In the above picture, note that the scaffolding height is almost 3' below the max ceiling heigh of the control room. The control room cloud will be below that level, but it shows just how much volume (and surface area) we'll have for the sound to expand before it hits the back wall and reflects.

Here's a view from what will be the desk position of Booth C, looking back into the studio:

Enjoy!

For those of you wondering...

what was the big deal about the scaffolding height in my recent posting...I've corrected the image to now point to the correct image. Duh!

Now you'll have a better idea of what a 16' ceiling peak is going to look like.

Can you guess?

I just posted a challenge for those of you with a few minutes to spare. Can you guess what this is?

Give up? There are more hints here.

I'll stab at it...... Glass block or stained glass block.

BTW, I had Wes help me with my control room here. Still finishing but very excited to hear the result.

It does contain glass, but it's neither glass block nor stained glass block. The glass itself is approx 1/16" thick.

More guesses?

Correct! The glass pieces are 4" rhomboids, and they range in depth from 0 to -4 inches.
