They have raised the level of the project to that of a wold class facility - by letting them do that we had to almost double our budget. This is something to keep in mind when hiring them or anyone at their level. But it was a concious decission we have never regretted. That said I think they are willing to work with tighter budgets, but you would need to lower the reqirements for isolation or HVAC, which is not a big problem when you are just building one studio and don't need GK10-15 (which is a measure for background noise rating). hope this helps.

| Week 12 - part II Thanks, Eduardo! One last quick update, before I go snowboarding for a week... Even though during the last couple of weeks the focus has been to complete the mastering room, the rest of the facility has made progrss as well: * Helmholtz mount of Flutter Free's for the Edit room - will go on rear wall * Edit room front 'wall' * Iso 2 * Iso 1 * 5.1 Control Room - rear wall |

| D-Day!! Sorry it's been so long since the last update, but we've been very busy transforming this place from a construction site into a studio. And besides some minor technical issues and cosmetics the acoustic and technical part is close to finished!! So far we are very pleased the way everything has turned out. There have been lots of memorable moments on our way - especially turning on the monitoring for the first time in each room and listen to some music... ![]() But even measured by all the excitement and adrenalin kicks during this big adventure, I have to say that today is a special day. As I write this George (the other crazy guy spending as much time and money as I am) is picking up our design team (WSDG) from the airport... The next couple of days the rooms will be measured, speakers will be moved and by the end of this we'll know what we've got and if anything needs to be improved. But as far as we can tell there is not much room for improvement: They did an amazing job designing our studio - and the builders did a great job realizing their design. I have new pics in my camera, but so far have had no time to get them off the camera and post them - which sometimes takes quite long, since the gearslutz server seems very busy... ![]() |

| That sounds so corporate! *picking up the team from the airport!* I bet you guys are like kids waiting to ride their bike they got from Santa! This is exciting. Keep us posted, please?! And more importantly: pay attention (so you can reveal the teams secrets later..if you want) .... and have fun!!! |

![]() Well - we definitely got our ride. But I would not say.... bike - it's more like a Ferrari ![]() To quote Gabriel Hauser of WSDG: '...The performance of our rooms is among the best he has ever heard..." And believe me - he has heard two or three We are VERY happy and excited about all this!!! I'll have to wade through some pics and post some later today.

| Last week was quite busy... Gabriel Hauser and Dirk Noy of WSDG Europe spent 2 days in Vienna measuring RT 60 times, Sound Transmission (Isolation) and Noise Criteria (NC) in the 3 control rooms and 2 Iso booths and Frequency Response of the monitoring systems. By listening and measuring we determined the final position of the monitors. The pics are showing: * Omnidirectional Speaker for RT60 measurements in Iso 1 * in Mastering * Testing and positioning different sized PMCs in the 5.1 room * Georg and Gabriel (both seated) and Dirk * L to R: Gabriel, me, Dirk and Georg in the Mastering room |

| Hi, your studio really looks impressive and I bet you all are very proud now. Great job! What does the frequency response of such a mastering room look like? |

So far we have only done the measuring and during that we checked some of the resulting graphs on the laptop. WSDG will now carefully evaluate the data and then we will see (when we receive the final documentation) if we missed anything... BUT, so far what we have seen and heared looks and sounds exceptionally good. ![]() This may not be scientifically correct, but to me it seems there are two types of frequency responses that matter - one is regarding the room itself, which we averaged (=different positions of the omnidirectional speaker each with 2-3 meaurement mic positions and 4 measurements on each mic position). This is what was done for RT 60 measurements. Of course they also made sure no single measurement was out of whack... The other is the specific frequency response of the monitoring system in it's final position (since we are using free field speakers) with the main focus on the measurements at the listening position (single measurements, not averaged). For our mastering room this means: monitors go down to 16Hz! Some minor dips and peaks in the bass (very controlled and much less than a typical control room according to WSDG) and a VERY smooth mid and highrange - no visible (in the impulse or frequency response) or audible early reflections, no resulting combfiltering. To put in words: Deep and focused Bass and a great soundstage (wide, detailed - strong phantom center) - A GREAT SOUNDING ROOM!! ![]() The graphs themselves don't look entirely different than what you might find in a manufacturers spec sheet, but they usually don't say much about how it sounds anyways. There are rooms and speakers that measure flat and still sound like sh*t... Also - these rooms are really quiet. No computers, hardrives or anything with a fan or noisy in any other way are inside the room. Isolation is great, therefore no noise will ever mask the sound comming from the speakers which helps the sound quite a bit... We measured Noise Criteria (NC) with a VERY low self noise 1/2" measurement mic (since 1/4" measurement mics have too much self noise for this kind of measurements), but the self noise of the mic was still too high to measure NC... We were still only measuring the self noise of the 1/2" measurment mic. ![]()

| Hi Mischa, thank you for your answer. I would like to see such a frequency response curve with my own eyes just to know what dimensions we are talking about. On the other hand I respect that this might be a company secret, never mind. Best Hannes |

I totally understand your curiosity, but I'm not sure if I want to discuss a graph in a public forum even though it is NOT a company secret. One single graph simply does not fully represent the sound of a room and leaves a lot of room for misinterpretation. Reading and knowing what to learn from graphs is not an easy task - what looks perfectly straight can be severe combfiltering and what looks like a large hole could be just a small notch - just as aresult of 1/3 octave smoothing, windowing... But as I said in an earlier mail we have not received the measurement documentation yet, so I don't have anything to post anyways.

I'm not sure if Musikmesse is a place to make a mastering engineer happy... ![]() But if you ever come to Vienna, feel free to call or PM me and we can talk. Regarding Musikmesse - if you know anything worth checking out let e know, maybe I'll change my mind.

| Erm ... I take it as a given that every frequency response curve that is published anywhere should be carrying information about the gate time and probable smoothing. After all we are in an acoustics forum ... And other parameters like T60, impulse response and phase are important as well of course. But basically I am just curious/interested, so all is fine. No hassle. Hannes |

| It's been quite a while since my the last update - but unfortunately attachments have been dissabled for the last month or so, therefore it has been impossible to post the final pics of the finished studio... What has happened meanwhile: Studio 1 has been open for quite a while now and we have been really busy mastering, which is absolutely necessary since we definitely need some cash ;-) Studio 2 and 3 are also up and running - this Tuesday we had our opening party which was a lot of fun. Somewhere arround 200 people showed up to se the new studio and almost everyone stayed quite long, chilled and had quite a few drinks... Since the upload seems to work again I think I owe this thread a couple of final pics, but before I post them, first of all we would like to thank everyone who has been involved in this project - we did receive some questions regarding who did what and what suppliers we used - all of which we would hereby like to thank (I'll also put some links at the end of this post): Of course first of all there is this crazy team of acoustic designers and our architect who patiently transformed all those ridiculous ideas (I think that's what he initially must have been thinking about the acoustic design) into a great sounding and beautiful looking mastering studio. Thanks Heinz and Gabriel!!! Also thanks to the supplier of our studio doors and special materials for the floating design (we used mostely Kinetics Noise Control), especially thanks for the doors which were among the best bang for the buck purchases - thanks Jan-Joost! Thanks to Martin from Klangfarbe, Brian from RPG, Mike @ Vintageking, Mark @ Funky Junk and last but definitely not least thanks to all the construction workers and companies who did a great job! Here goes the list: Acoustic Design: John Storyk, Gabriel Hauser WSDG Architectural and Acoustic Design Architect: Heinz Richter Planungs- und Architekturbüro Heinz Richter Noise Control/ Acoustic Doors/Acoustic Materials: Jan-Joost van Beek Alara-Lukagro Brian Moule RPG Europe Harry Pawel (very efficient bass traps) Pawel Acoustics Equipement: Martin Richter, Gerhart Moser Klangfarbe Mike Nehra Vintage King Audio Mark Thompson Funky Junk Ltd |
