Great studio

Hi Mathew, just came upon this thread and i must say you have done a great job, it looks fantastic, it´s a real insparation for anyone wanting to build a new place
I might have missed it but what monitor system will you be using?
Did you send those redco snakes to the patchbay or directly to the pres? With those Dsub connectors it looks like you´ve sent them to the patchbay, would it be possible for you to describe your wiring scheme?

Hiya Hotstuff,

We have Barefoots as our mains, and we also have a set of NS10's coming for shite B monitors.

As for the patchbay, we've got the mc snakes going into the patchbay. All the channels are then normalled into mic pres, but this allows us to send any mic line to any pre through the bay. The Redco bays we got are really great. We just had to change the points that had mic signals on them to "Ground Vertically Strapped", and it works like a charm.

Just always remember to turn off Phantom before patching mics in and out.

Thanks for the info on the patchbay setup Matthew, I wonder if i can normal the mic to mic pre inputs on a simple 48 point jack patchbay,it doesn´t have grounding options.
Those shite ns10 will prove there worth! you´l see! Dont forget the power amp, must be slutty.

Sound Proof?

I am curious how well the sound proofing is working?

Have you had any pounders on the drums yet?

Regards

Hey guys,

Thanks for all the notes and requests for more pics. The room is pretty much finished now, so once we clean it up I'll snap some photos of the "completed" rooms.

As for soundproofing ... well, it ain't perfect, that much we know for sure. We expected that. Will it hold out enough that our neighbours won't feel the need to challenge us? I think so. I know the neighbours can hear it (one of them already commented that he could) but he didn't seem to be bitching us out. Only time will tell for sure how offensive our presence is ;-)

I know you've heard lots of compliments already on this build, but the before and after pictures are truely inspiring! Very jealous!
Quick question, I wasn't sure what the purpose of the slatted ceiling was? Is it a diffuser of sorts? (It looks cool!)
Once again, congrats!

Hey, I know, we've been slacking off. We're in the middle of working on our project now and I've lost all sense of things.

But to update you all -- the room is sounding really nice. We're really thrilled. This project we're going after really big boomy drums, and we were afraid the room wasn't going to be big enough to get the roomy sound we were after, but so far, they're huge.

Once we get some things cleaned up I'm going to try to take some final pictures. You guys will all be the first to see.

Great to see your studio.

What's the update on the studio?

On one hand, I can certainly sympathize with the approach of "Hey, I can't hear any difference, so why should I pay that much?". On the other, I wonder why anyone who can't hear a difference is recording, mixing, or producing records.

Very cool! This is probably the nicest studio build thread I've seen. And you're in Calgary too! Hopefully I get to see this at some point.

What's the studio called? What area of town is it in?

The riser at the back of the control room that will house the couch.

We decided to put an isolation booth behind the live room, along with a window into it from the control room.

Jeff surprised us and built a "loft" area to act as a lounge, now that the isolation booth has taken up the original location for it.

Building tree-house-ish, atticky, steep little stairs going up to the lounge area. We'll be putting railings all the way around.

Good luck, and best wishes I always like to see people who believe in themselves and have a vision. PS it looks real good ...
