The Mackies may not be the best looking option (although really, unless these new Euphonix things are reasonably priced, at the moment they sadly are) ... but to be honest, they work really well for what we needed. And they fit just perfectly in the desk size wise.

I can get over how they look .. in fact, when you're in the room, you hardly even look at them .. it's all the surrounding gear that you pay attention to.

Ah, that I can understand. But what I actually meant was, there should be a real console

Haha, I totally agree with you there! But we're trying something a bit new+old with this one. Pres/EQs/comps/master in rackmount in the desk, sort of like an actual console ... but the faders (provided by the ugly mackies) are merely controls for the DAW.

We had originally been looking at the Tonelux/API stuff but really we realised that we were just getting "too slutty" (if that's possible) and weren't thinking about what was actually going to WORK and SOUND GOOD for a midrange project studio...

Maybe after we cut a few platinum records we'll trade up for a Wunder console.

Hey Matt

first off, really really great job, its soooooo damn nice there!

on the MCU/XT/XT front, what DAW are you using? i had the same setup as you did with the MCU and extenders and swapped out for a mixed logic M24

Mixed Logic

you can email kevin borroman there and he is a great guy

i run sonar and cubase and its a great controller for those DAW's, and IMHO much better built and supported

anyway, just an idea if you were looking to switch

although the new euphonix stuff also looks good

best of luck to you!

Hi matthew,

Just a question about your setup with the Avocet;

- Do you use the DA to send your mixes to tape?

Overall are you happy with it,
does it improve a lot from a cheaper monitor controller?

Very nice studio btw...

Thanks for the compliment! We're using Logic. I had originally looked at the mixed logic, but I just couldn't get the "logic" of not having the scribble strips above each track. I figured it would be an awfully obnoxious time having to look at the monitor and decipher which fader was associated with which DAW track.

Really, I love how the MCU works -- the only reason I'd ever change is for aesthetics...

We love the Avocet for monitoring, it's absolutely stellar. Great sound even when compared with coming out of the Apogees. That said, we haven't ever tried using it's DA for output -- since we used to record back to the DAW and not to tape. Now that we have that studer, we might experiment a bit with that. I'll report back if I discover anything of use!

Cool, that's really tempting (the Avocet) especially when coming from a Mackie Big Knob..

I like your setup , the new+old is the way to go

Hey guys, thanks!!! Randy -- nice to see you back around, hope all is well?

And Yes, it's a Studer but it's a 2-track a810, not an A80. Have to get a tech to look at it ... right now it's not putting anything out .. but it was working and fully tested before we moved it last year so I'm hoping it's something simple....

I hope it's something simple too! What a fantastic machine to print to for mastering. Best of luck with everything.

Hi Matthew

Trebor Flow here for the Lonodn Evening Standard

I have a question about your old+new mix set up.

Without an analog monitoring desk how do you supply the artists with a zero latency monitor mix?

For instance when I track a vocal, my Origin STT-1 has two seperate outputs so one feeds the converter and the other feed my monitor desk (which also has a feed from my DAW)

I have never been able to get on with the so called "zero latency" monitoring that converters offer by sending the signal back out of their d/a, the 2ms delay this seems to create has always bothered me - IMHO nothing beats direct analog monitoring for feel and pitching of instruments /voice.

How do you overcome this problem with your hybrid set up.

By the way - congrats on the studio - it looks STUNNING

Best

Trebor

matthew ...

just curious ... isn't the console ( 19-inch sides ) running to hot ... do you have fan's installed .. I think the temp after a long day will be extremely hot ...
maybe stupid Q : but I've seen nice gear in the past .. damaged by temps ... even when room temp is ok/cool
since then 1 space ventilation blinds into all my racks .. specially when you're hanging them upside -> down ...

with you're converters in the standing rack you're more carefull .. than you're beauty tubbies .... who gives a *** about converters :-)

enjoy !!

Haha, Trebor, always happy to talk to the press.

We're using a hearback system. We're taking the digital outs from the AD-16x, through symphony, and into a focusrite saphire in standalone mode, which then feeds the hearback.

While it's not perfectly latency free, we've found that symphony is incredibly low-latency, and we haven't had any complaints with this system yet. The latency will be even lower now that we've switched to PCIe and a mac pro from our old G5.

If we do encounter issues, another option is to get a small mixer, and pull mults out of the patchbay that all of our mics are going into. But really, I don't feel like we're going to have to do something messy like that -- symphony's latency is pretty inaudible. It might be there if you really look for it, but it's not in the least bit distracting. I've cut some really good vocal tracks myself through the system and it wasn't a problem for me...

Hey man, haha, well, the space between the converters is merely the result of an abundance of room to do so. In the desk itself, we wanted to use as much space as we could, so you're right, some pieces of gear are butted right up against each other.

There are small gaps between each piece of gear just by nature, and then along the sides. Our plan is to put in some silent fans under the desk in three different positions, and we're pretty confident the constant air flow is going to keep it safe enough. We're also leaving the back of the desk off and instead attaching some very thin fabric to cover it up, which should allow for air flow.

It's funny, out of all our gear when we had it set up in the old place, the things that got unbearably hot were the avocet rackmount and the apogees. Things like the tubetech, the MP2A, or the thermionic phoenix ... while they got warm, it didn't seem like it was any warmer than usual.

I hope we can keep it this way, because it certainly looks great with it all mushed together, and it also is very convenient to have it all fit in front of us!

Thanks for the reply Matthew

It's funny but I really find the direct analog path "feels better" but then again my converters have more latency than the ones you use.

I'm really looking forward to hearing your first mixes from the new set up
I must say I'm seriously thinking of getting an Avocet -

Great thread.

Hey, thanks Eduardo, though I must say I'm in awe of your place ... beautiful design and craftsmanship! Congrats on getting word on the Redco shipment ... whatever happened there, the one thing you can be sure of is the quality of the cables once they arrive, they do a great job over there. Keep in touch! I'll pop in on your thread now and again...

Great stuff Matthew and thanks for sharing.

Is that an Argosy console or did you build it yourself? I was not aware that they had one that fit the Mackies.
