You're absolutely right - it was a UAD-1. Which is also happy.

Well this is a nice twist, Cody -- I think you're marrying my ex-girlfriend!

Calgary is a small place, it turns out...

By all means we can have a chat soon and you can check the place out....

F*ck!

Now I know where the next Fast Romantics record is going to be recorded...
I think we were supposed to do a show with Trevor before the CNL was shut down for business. I was quite looking forward to that!

I'm sure we'll get to do one again. Fast Romantics are indeed our first client, you're right!

We'll be doing shows again once the record is done so we'll hook up with you for one I'm sure. Trevor is one of my best friends in the whole world ... he was our first drummer. Small bloody world.

Sorry guys, I know an update is long overdue. Things are moving right along.

Panelling in control room ceiling is done. Boxes for potlights are in, as are the potlights themselves .. though we're waiting to stain the boxes before we finish embedding them. Waiting for our three hanging lights for the back of the control room. The raised sitting area has panelling on the sides now.

Both rooms are primed, and the control room has the first coat of paint on. I'm feeling like we're right around the corner from wiring this bloody place up!

Apologies for the camera phone pics, my real camera was at home.

Hey Mathew,

Things are looking great, thanks for sharing.

I had a question regarding the sound treatment of the room.

I may be missing something but the main live room looks.........a bit too live IMO. Are you planning on installing bass traps or Absorption panels? Perhaps I am missing something in the pictures.

Thanks and keep up the great work!!!

Thanks man -- and yes, it's insanely live in there right now. We have about $6000 in GIK traps that are going up in the live room and in the control room once everything is painted.

Studio build

I really am interested in the work you guys are doing. It's cool to see a studio being built from the ground up.

If you ever get the chance to go to Los Angeles, check out NRG in North Hollywood. I've worked at many studios but NRG seems to be the most up to date and well ran facility in the U.S. When we were recording last year, Jay Baumgardner, the owner of NRG and mixer and producer for such bands as Papa Roach, System of a Down, and P.O.D. was there working and was the most laid back and "real" person I've met in the business. He taught me more in an hour conversation than I learned the whole time I was doing my internship at another top of the line (but not worth mentioning) studio.

I really want to thank you for the nice order. Please be sure to send me some pictures when it is done. We MOST put some of them on the GIK website.

So a little update without photos ... I'm currently in Vancouver on a bit of a stress reducer, and so my good and noble friends have stayed back to continue work.

I just got word that the flooring is down in the control room, all of the painting is done, flooring is going in on the live room, and the Omnirax desk is being built and customised!

Worst part about it is, I have to wait 5 days to get home to see all of this madness!! I can't wait. And that's when you'll all see the next round of photos too. Sorry for the 5-day blackout....

Well boys and girls, it was nice to come back to such developments!!

All of the flooring is in. Paint is dry. Started putting gik acoustic traps on the ceiling but nothing on the walls yet. Eagerly awaiting our new shipments from them so we can keep going.

Omnirax Desk came in. It's assembled and Jeff the genius modified it to house more rack gear in the centre area. It's a beautiful little beast. We still have to clean it up more. We're going to embed the mackie controls in there nice and snug, and hopefully find a spot to embed our crane song avocet so it's well presented and easily accessed...

A bunch of trim is in around windows and doors.

In some of these photos you can see Jeff working on our big ceiling piece that will cover the old florescant lighting sockets, and house 8 hanging lights, as well as some nice looking wooden slats. It's going to be a giant trap (4" of mineral wool in the whole thing) and then we're hoping the vertical wooden slats will act is some kind of diffusing element. If not, it'll look cool, at least.

But my god, did the paint and flooring ever make us feel like we're 2 inches away from setting up instruments!!!!

Which omnirax desk is that? Looks great, you gonna put a dual screen in above the mackie control? And how much did you pick up the extenders for? They seem to be more than the main control unit nowdays!

Looks really cool by the way, especially the wood in the control room. Not keen on the white with a blue line, with such an amazing space I would say to give serious design consideration. But maybe it's awesome when you're there.

The blue line was in previous photos, it was just painter's tape. It's a two-tone brown, lighter brown on top, darker on bottom, as you can see in the latest photos. We're not quite sold on how that turned out, but I'm hoping that once the bass traps and homemade baffles get put up, it's all going to make sense!

The desk is the omnirax S6C24XL, but we've modified it to have rack space in the center area as well, and we'll be modifying where the Mackies sit to house them nice and snug.

Thanks for all the well-wishes everyone, it makes us feel fuzzy. Good fuzzy.

Yes, dual 20" apples ....
Extenders were around $700 each I think, last year.

Thanks Meriphew!

Update... Hanging lights should be in both rooms sometime next week. Our mega load of GIK bass traps are coming on Tuesday. Live Room's centre wooden slatted bass trap is being hung on Sunday.

Our massive cable order is going in today, and hopefully we can get Redco to push it out nice and quick for us, because that's the last thing before we can wire this bad boy up.

A note to all of you following the "on the cheap" aspect of this build. While it's still definitely on the cheap, we have most certainly discovered that the old studio-builder's phrase "Whatever your budget is, double it" ... well .. it applies. Tee-hee.
