Hey, thanks man, that's nice of you to say. There's progress but I haven't been in there since the mudding and taping began. I'm on my way in there today to hopefully snap some shots, as I think we're pretty close to finished with that, and then we start painting. Tomorrow we'll finish the control room ceiling ... and then it'll be time to slap the flooring in!!!

I'll try to get photos up today or tomorrow...

We're all broke and exhausted and a little confused... but it's a good feeling to be almost done this thing.

Progress Progress Progress

More progress. Almost all of the mudding and taping is done on the sheetrock ... there's just a little bit left and then we move onto painting!!!

It's pretty funny how much smaller it seems now that it's all boarded in. It's also INCREDIBLY live in there. Echo lasts a good five minutes. It's a nice, warm echo, surprisingly warm for just sheetrock ... so I'm hoping that once we get trapping and diffusion in there in just the right places/amounts, it'll be a perfect little tracking space!

And as you can see, today we were in there dangling from the control room ceiling trying to nail up the pine. I'm such a pussy when it comes to heights -- Alan, my construction partner for the day, does much better. Our ladders are at the ends of their lives, and they were ricketty. So I conquered some fears today.. nail gunning things fifteen feet above the floor....

It's comming together very nice! I like the double ceiling height, makes it look really spacious (and hopefully sounds very good). Keep the pictures roling in!

Thanks guys.

And just a little inside info. We're *contemplating* (it's not final yet) getting a Daking Console for the mix room instead of going all outboard. We'd be selling off most if not all of our pres to do it ... but we're evaluating our financials at this very second and seeing if it's feasible.

That'd be a nice way to Christen in the studio!

If the money's there...do it without looking back! If nobtwiddler still has his, you should talk to him. It was a great board with mods and the price was excellent.

Thanks for the support!

We have indeed looked into the tonelux, and it's still a consideration, as is the API 1608, and as is just not doing a console at all and sticking with the fab outboard we have.

Decisions, decisions!!

We've decided against getting a console at this point. Instead we're going to get a killer piece of furniture to house almost all of our rack gear at our fingertips. Problem is, we're short a little key information about some gear. If you've got the time and a good gear collection, you mind helping us figure out some gear dimensions???

Dimensions of Various Gear -- Phoenix, Chandler, API, Thermionic, Great River

Seeing you've gone this far , make your own to genuinely "have it at your finger tips" which in my case means having it angling up at me out of the desktop not in a rack that I have to turn or bend down for.
I was turned on to this style after having mastering done at 301 in Sydney - it's so hands on and logical with a good patch bay.
(Sorry i have no ability to post pics but you could check studio 301 mastering site to get an idea)
Cheers, Ross

Ross -- funny you should say, that's exactly what we're doing. We're modifying an Omnirax Synergy desk that was originally built for a control 24 --it will house our control surface as well as 31U of rack gear!! All at our fingertips. sort of like a console, but made entirely out of outboard gear... should be fun.

Thanks for the note!

Wow! This is going to be in my hometown! I need to come down to the spot and help you guys out... though I am pretty unhandy... I guess I can paint, but that's about it.

Really happy that you posted all the snaps. Considering that today was my first time seeing this thread, it was cool to breeze through and see how much progress you have done.

Talking

Looking great man ! you guys have been busy

As for the gear,... you can always add gear later,... spend the $$$$ on things that cant be done later,..

with a good console you would be suprised how little outboard is needed to make a killer record

Jeff, my business partner, is pretty damn close to a carpenter, but it's not his actual job. He IS quite a genius with that stuff too. Our drummer has been helping out and he's good with his hands, he's building houses right now so he knows what he's doing. And we've had some friends drop by and help, so it's been really a community effort. Really blown away by all the support we've been getting!! Thanks for the compliments.

Hey George, I suppose it's a matter of taste then. I've had multiple omnirax desks and I find them to be an incredible value. And we looked at Sterling, Argosy, and Omnirax -- and Omnirax had the best options when it came to rack space and layout to start with. We're going to be chopping it up and customizing it to suit anyways.

I'm quite convinced that the Omnirax desk will be quite.... real.

Anyways, thanks for the support!

Thanks Steve, means a lot comin' from you and your experiences! I agree, gear is least important at the moment. The console will happen in a couple of years, and for now we've got a spectacular outboard collection that will sound just as great. Just might not look as cool ;-)

I remember I sold you something, but I don't think it was an ATC-2, was it?? Regardless, I'm glad whatever I sold you is happy. I hate to doom gear to unhappy lives....

More photos coming this week, thanks Richard...

Hey Cody, nice to see a fellow cowtowner here. We're half way through with painting at this point anyways, and because of our near madness levels we hired a friend with a sprayer to do it! But thanks for the nice sentiment.

When it's all done, feel free to come down and have a tour of the place. We're really excited about it, I think it fills a nice middle-ground niche in Calgary where there isn't all that much competition!

I have been talking it over with my fiance and that's what I figured; Calgary has room for mid level project studios. I was thinking of doing a "go to you" type service, but I need to make a couple small upgrades to my portable rig (some new pres, new converters). Down the road I hope to build my own space (I got the a-ok from the wife to be! ), but between times I want to get some more experience. Just curious, have you/do you work at any of the studios in town? I already have a full time job, but my work is in the media already and I'm thinking I could slowly phase myself into the audio side of things (as opposed to video production). I'm just wondering how to get into this market!?

(sorry, a bit off topic)

Anyways, when she's done I'll be sure to drop a line and get the coordinates to the base! Also... any ideas what you're naming the space?
