Sloping in Control Room

Hey all,

I was hoping some of you might be able to give me some advice here. I had read in a couple of different places (wish I could remember where, I can't seem to) that sloping your ceiling up in the back of the control room provides some extra help in removing reflections and overall improves the accuracy of your mixes. So that's what we did in the control room.

But I just had a studio owner who I trust tell me that it's really the opposite of what I should be aiming for. Doh!

Here's what we've done with the framing of the ceiling in the control room:

As you can see, there's a bit of a flat ceiling in the very front (maybe two feet out from the front wall) and then it begins a steady slope from around 12 feet high all the way up to 15 or 16 feet high.

A few questions:

1. Could I get some feedback on whether or not this is a good approach, and why? I've heard it both ways now.

2. Can anybody make some suggestions, if this is a *bad* approach, on how to modify what we already have to make the best improvement to the ceiling? We don't want to tear down what we already have if possible, but I'd love to hear all perspectives on this.

If the slope is indeed problematic, we might as well fix it now while it's just a frame and has no sheetrock on it.

Thanks!!

Matthew

I'm having a new control room designed by Wes Lachot and my ceiling is going to be lower in the front and higher in the back (the walls will be more narrow in the front and wider in the back).

Its a pretty common way to build a RFZ mix position.. so I'm sure you're safe.

From looking at your pictures is your control room not going to be totally symmetrical?

Cant wait to start one of these pages for my control room build..

I might be seeing things...but you need to get 2X4s underneath your headers against the door/window frames.

Am I just missing those? If so, I appologise.

Matthew,

The sloped ceiling helps break up room modes either way. However, if you look at my attached drawing you can see that the first ceiling reflection travels a shorter distance when the front of the room is the shorter end. Longer reflections are better. From this perspective, having the ceiling slope down towards the rear is preferable.

Btw, this graphical method of mirroring the room across a wall/ceiling is a convenient way of determining the reflection points. Just draw a line from the speaker image to the listening position. Where it intersects the wall/ceiling is the first refection point. These positions are great places to put broad band absorbers, or perhaps diffusers.

Haven't posted an update in a while, we've been so busy stuffing mineral wool I haven't remembered to bring my camera.

Here's some fairly recent shots. Whole place is nearly stuffed. Resilient channels are up. We've got the windows in, and the sliding doors, and big heavy-ass doors to the live room. Although in these pictures only one of the window panes is in so far ... we're doubling up all the glass and that was already done after these photos were taken.

You can also see the steep hazzardy stairs leading up to the loft, and the iso booth with mineral wool inside of it.

Sheetrocking, here we come. We're getting tired and bitchy.

Very nice. I must say that I am very jealous at this point in time. I have been working on funds for my 'would-be' studio for some time now. It is taking a lot longer than I anticipated - seeing pics and posts such as this really help pick my spirits up!
Thanks for sharing with us!

Hey, thanks guys. Yes, we're really, really excited about this place. Of course, it always takes longer than expected, but so far we've done really well at keeping our building costs reasonably low. It's still a lot of money for starving artists like us, but we're going to make it.

That said, this kind of a process is certainly not for the faint of heart, we're finding. Poor Jeff, who due to his talents has most certainly bore the brunt of the labour, has so far scratched his cornea with mineral wool and put a nail-gun-nail through his forearm. And beyond those injuries, it's just plain exhausting, the do-it-yourself approach is.

But I know that once we're done it's going to be the most rewarding thing either of us have ever undertaken, and that's what keeps us going.

Thanks for all the words of support!!

Resilient channel, and then we're hanging sheetrock on that, and then building some custom basstraps/diffusion where necessary at what will hopefully be some clever angles.

And yeah, those scaffoldings scare the shit out of me ... I won't even go up there. Jeff hangs off of them like Tarzan. The man has stones.

Thanks for the kind words boys and girls.

Geeting good drywallers will save a lot of time. I may know someone that can help PM me with your phone number and I have them call you if they are not too busy.
Are you going to be using double 5/8" drywall with staggered seems and sealant between the layers?
Also I can't tell from the pics are those 2x4 or 2X6? walls?
are the studs 12" OC or 24" OC?
Nails or Screws? are the walls floating or bolted to the floor?
Sorry so many questions ... Just curious.
