Thread Starter | inlinemastering - rebuild thread
Hi fellow gearslutz and mastering guys...
as promised I'll try to give an insight on the rebuild off my mastering-room....
after 3 years working in my room it was time to take the deep plunge to straight out the room and make the room the best suited possible for mastering...
main problem is... all the gas/electricity/air-circulation is centered into he middle off
the current room... so dividing this space in to much small areas ... there was a vocal-booth/guitar-room, office/desk-space and control/mastering area... I used to record/midi-stuff and do classic location recordings before focussing on mastering for the 100% ..
also the washing-machine and drying-machine were built in.... and with a family off three little kids... you can guess the dust and inconveinice...
ok basic off the plan :
get the gas/electricity/air-circulation to the side .. get rid off the washing-machines
, break down all the inner-walls and create one open space off total 8M x 5,50 M
well I've hired two different firms/builders who can help me to work quickly and they now so much better.... it's costing a lot off cash .. but it feels so good!!! not to worry... and we can work quickly... because all has to be done in 4 weeks from shutdown (which was yesterday)
one off the firms is doing the private part off the house .. the other is doing the business side/studio off all ...
we had some amazing busy mastering month in 2007 ... so it was pretty hectic to get to all the deadlines and delivering the masters before shutdown.
well were already pretty much on our way ( 2 weeks before shutdown ) ... all the gas/electricity/air-circulation is removed (we had to drill through 20cm concrete) and the started with the bathroom .. so we can move the washing-machine ..
the bathroom is getting a total make-over .. cause were planning to move the washing machine and the dryer in that bathroom … I love my wife for OK’ing on that … well we had to redo the children’s rooms for that .. I guess we all now the trick off the trade …
yesterday we packed all the equipment and brought it to a safe storage where also the nautilus 800 and the sterling mastering–console is stored … still waiting for the croockwood ….
After bringing all the gear away .. we broke down the room … we will be busy breaking-down
Until the first off may … then the builders are coming to do the new walls and floating floor ….
there wil be an upgrade on electricity, some 5300 watts airco, sterling-modular-masterinconsole-C, all cabling down the wooden floor, some silent 19inch PC/HD/UPS rack which will have the heat suck out by the central-air-system ... the nautilus 800 and levinson-amp will be placed ..
after that the room will be measured by a accoustic-expert and we will apply the bass-trapping/diffusors etc. etc.
we will have a lot to do and have some fun ...... hope you enjoy reading/watching .. and drop in with
any kind of comment ... :-)
Okay .. watch the old volvo it has done almost 500.000 KM .....
Greeting wim/inlinemastering

Onwards and upwards for Wim!
Looks like you bought the Wiess EQ-1 and DS-1, nice yeah? Parallel compression on the DS-1 is great for beefing up whimpy kicks and basslines. I'd wouldn't mind the Tube-tech multiband you have at your disposal. Peace.

btw we had that same grey Volvo wagon in the '90s, put about 300,000 miles on it.

Thread Starter | ceiling and sizes
some info on the ceiling which is on one side pretty high 3.50 Meter and running to zero in two different angles .... well its no box .. I think this is pretty good for accoustics .... the ceiling will be used for diffusion/absorbtion
also nice is the space behind and around the B&W nautilus 800 ... behind the 800
we will use the space for some bass-trapping, using the existing construction ..
included 3 more pictures from the wall construction .. |

Thread Starter | working on the floor
today - friday - we worked on the floor ..... it's done for almost 70% .. so I have to finish it this weekend ...
there will be two more layers on the floor .. one thin about 8mm cardboard - sound-absorber and on top I'll still have to choose ... I prefer a wooden floor and would hesitate to put on laminate .. wood is much more audio-friendly .. any opinions on what to use ...
I still can access the cable-lanes ..
you really can see were the B&W will come .. we made sure it's strong unther there ....
enjoy the pictures ...

Thread Starter | new electricity
I've been pretty busy the last day's
the room is getting along the floor and walls are ready ..... yesterday we had the electricity done .. main reason was the airco-unit which needs his own group .. and I wanted 3 groups for the equipment and amplification ....
tommorow they're going to plaster/stucadoor the walls etc. etc. .. they should have done it today .. but someting came up .....
also the wooden floor is coming tommorow .. so we can be busy again making the floor and painting the room ...
all electric en UTP cabling is done so when the floor is in we can start putting up the equipment ...
on may 21 there is an appointment with some pro-movers for bringing up the nautilus 800 on the two stairs ... I decided that because these guys are insured when the drop them .. I did not want to put my friends in a stress over that ...
slowly starting to order the last equipment pieces .. Yesterday I orded the RME HDSP AES-32 and the break-out box BOB-32 ...
it will be the main PC-card .... I will have two workstations .. one main on which the playback/capture is being done and the other
for editing/webdesign/mail etc. etc. Both workstations will have access to the same HD's in the GB network.
all computers will be in a silent 19-inch rack .... so I had to get ( 4 ) 10 meter high-Q VGA cables for running the 2 double screens on each
workstation ... also the firewire/usb cables will be run down the floor ...
thinking about 2 small 10 to 12 inch VGA screens which would be nice on the mastering-console .. so the won't be in the soundfield ..
but they're hard to find or expensive ... mayby some car lcd/vga could be the solution ... otherwise some normal 15-ichh TFT will do at first ..
again some pictures ...
greetings wim

hi, i got some 9" lcd touchscreens from ebay, direct from hong kong. Great screens, windows mac and linux drivers. There are loads on ebay. I never thought to use them in the studio, i use them as an itunes jukebox in my kitchen but it would be great to use them as a transport.
Looking good,

Okay, back again .. worked for four days like mad I think .... until late in the evenings .... my son had his birthday .... so no time to update the thread ... but we did manage .. to get where I wanted to ...
first the answers ... Andy next week I will know more or have orded like macleod said .. Ebay is full .. Ill have a go with a german firm .....
Mischa : remember the room is in my house ... the house has to be able to sell in a few years ..... the design is my own .... i've read the studio-design forums until my head hurts .... ( JOHN SAYER'S - FORUM IS GREAT !!!! )
after the basic walls and floors are done .. the accoustic expert comes in ...
it's Toine from SoundScapeS -- Akoestiek Thuis .... it's not a "BIG" name but he will assist me in the process to tune the room to the speakers ... and advise on diffusors/bass-traps/ etc. etc. He did some more masteringrooms and is well known in the HIFI world
I have got some ideas on diffusors I like to design myself .. but in close contact with the accoustic expert ...
the wooden floor is in ... and the guys came to plaster the walls etc. etc. they were working with three guys so the did it in one day prep. and one day actual doing the plaster ..... they were amazing ... I'm very happy with the result ....
after that I did paint the wood which is supporting the roof .... and off-course carried with a friend the wood 2 stairs UP ....
okay .. pictures please ....

I had to do the floor on my own ... relaxed some coffee, radio .. and here we go ...
it took some more time because off the cable-lanes in the floor which should be able to be opened .....
not used to real physical work I got my share on back-pain, hands are hurting .. getting up about 2000 times ...
looking for the tools ...AAARGHHHH .. but I really enjoyed .. NO PAIN - NO GAIN ....
it really feels good again working with my hands ....
