Ney - Middle east instrument

I play the kaval, which is a lot like a ney. It is a bitch to record. The only way I've found that works well is to put it in a good room and mic the room. Unfortunaltely, I don't have access to a good room right now. Does anyone have any suggestions for micing this type of instrument?

man thas a very interesting instrument.

i kno its a wartorn area, but bigups in the middle east, being that im an israelite, but i got love for all middle easterners, we gotta meld with the music u kno?

Probably you have, but experiment with micing 1-2 feet away in front, try a wide cardiod pattern if available. The idea is to get the sound that is coming from both the mouth end and the finger holes.

But for live, I usually settle for micing the mouth end only, as it is the loudest, although a somewhat rougher sound than the finger holes. I've seen players live place a mic in either place. Also by moving the instrument across a mic from the very bottom end up past all the holes and back while playing, a cool phasing effect can be made!

hello.. Neys and Kavals dont give sound from their holes..first node of this reed is sound box,sound produce here.Thats why,to mic this instruments, you have to put your mic's front,looking to instrument's first node.(node that you blow)
maybe 10 -15 cm far.

All wind instruments give some sound out of the holes, though the volume is less (unless it is reed instrument, in which all sound comes from the holes). You can get some interesting tones from the finger holes.
