Bouzola or Mandouki?

I cant believe the GS "existing threads" came up with some suggestions for this title!

So anyway I have a new toy being made by a luthier, who is referring to it as a shortish scale octave mandolin.

The instrument is being made with a 23" scale and a narrower neck than most 'zouks.

So have I invented a new instrument and if so what shall we call it?

And I am now wondering what tuning it will like best. C G or mutant banjo....

Success!

Well the Mandouki arrived with a 22" scale by mistake but it is a really odd instrument.

Suppose I will have to do recordings and photos or it doesn't exist, right?

Oh and google now admits there is such a thing!

Back in the late 90s I was the monitor engineer for an annual Irish music festival up in eastern Massachussetts, and every year someone would show up with one of those things

...and every year I'd ask them what that instrument was called, and every year I'd get a different answer!

bouzouki
Irish bouzouki
mandola
mandocello
cittern
octave mandolin
"this ****ing thing"
etc.
