How to separate audio from video

I've been pulling my hair out trying to figure this out. I have a movie in avi format that I would like to get either wav or mp3 audio from.

I use a Mac. I've read several things about using VLC or Quicktime, didn't work. I tried dragging it into Logic and selecting "Separate audio track" and nothing happened. iMovie gave me some codec error. I'm fiddling around with Handbrake, but can't seem to figure this out either. nearly everything I've searched on google came up with some obscure one-off program that I have to download or buy to do this.

Am I wrong to think that this is a simple task that should be an option in one of the programs I've mentioned above? I feel like an idiot. I've had friends suggest I get something like Premier or After Effects, but that just seems like overkill. I have no interest in video editing, I just want to get the audio. Help?

Get Quicktime 7 Pro.

Select your movie and open it.

Go to Window > Show Movie Properties.

Select and highlight the Sound Track.

Extract it then go to File > Export As.

Choose from available options...

It's only £20 and it is very useful.

Other than that you could import the movie into your DAW and just bounce or export the audio?.,,

^ what he said, and im no video or post guy, but, couldn't you just record a send? i understand that might be time consuming based on the project though. so to the best of my knowledge your options are pretty much what Noiseflaw said, the send thing or a software specific program like this. I hope that helps or you find a better option.

Download this:

JACK | connecting a world of audio

It's free. You can use it to route audio wherever you want.

I'm a pro tools guy, but when I want to capture audio from random sources I use jack and route it here:

REAPER | Audio Production Without Limits

it's also "free".

i split my mac to run windows on a partition. and to the best of my knowledge the software will not port through and/or communicate, so bouncing files gets very annoying. I was hoping jack would allow me to record into/from the windows side from/into the mac side.

Atube Catcher. May work for you. It's free, I used it to get some songs off of YouTube and it got just the audio. It's been a while but I know it will work however you may have to upload the video to YouTube to get it. A little work but its free.

Or...

Connect your soundcard outputs to the inputs, load up logic, arm a stereo track for the inputs, pull the fader of the track down, press record, then open the film in vlc or whatever.

This should work, requires no further software, though you have to let the film play out in real time to get the whole audio...
