Thread Starter | Screen Recording Tutorials with Pro Tools Audio
OK, so I've searched GS and Google high and low and have not found a solution for what I'm trying to do. I'm looking to create screen recording tutorials using QuickTime, while demonstrating some pro tools mixing, editing, recording techniques. Someone on suggested using a program called soundflower, which actually worked for playing back audio from Protools to the screen recording, but that eliminated my vocal mic from working and also limited the number of inputs I could use from my digi002. I'm wondering if the digi002 is the culprit since aggregate mode is not available with the 002. Here's what I'm using:
MacPro OSX 10.75
Pro Tools 10
Digi002 BLA Sig Mod
(Trying to get SoundFlower to Work)
Here's what I want to do:
1. Do a screen recording with Quicktime (Figured out and works)
2. Have audio from pro tools go to QT (Figured out and works) 3. Record my voice or instruments through mics hooked up to digi002 (Can't seem to figure out)
Thanks in advance for your help with this. Here is an example of what I'm looking to do. Not the best example, but you get the idea.

Hey man! I pretty much have the exact same setup as you (002 PT, Quicktime, etc). What I do for my videos is use the RCA (red, white) outputs from the 002 and put those into the 1/8" mic input on my computer. Then in Quicktime, select the 'Computer Line Input'. Then you are good to go. All the tracks you playback in PT will be recorded in Quicktime, and you can run a talkback mic on an Aux track in PT and record that at the same time. Here is an example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O8SDqcQNfRY
I look forward to seeing your videos!

Yeah, you're not going to be able to do this internally. erictarr's solution is probably the most painless.
The problem is that when you're using the 002 as an actual Pro Tools interface, it doesn't play nicely with using the DAE engine to route individual inputs and outputs out of the Pro Tools application. The LED's will perpetually say "working..." when Pro Tools is in the background. Do you have an alternate interface of any type that you could use in tandem with the 002 in standalone mixer mode? That way, you can at least capture the audio at a depth of 24-bits.
By the way, I am the training director for the Boston Public School system, and have to make tutorial videos all the time. I tend to use ScreenFlow 4- it's fantastic, for whatever it's worth.
Keep us posted,
Goobs

Thanks guys. I'm going to try the simple set-up with RCA cables today and see if that works. Sounds like the easy solution. ScreenFlow 4 looks pretty darn cool as well, just really can't fork out the dough for it right now. More gear needed. I'm actually starting to build tube amps and working on my first Fender Tweed Champ 5F1 clone right now. I'll definitely share my videos when I get things working right.
Thanks again!

I look forward to seeing your videos! | Hey, quick question. What do you have your system inputs/outputs set as? Seems like when I do this set-up it starts up the Avid Core Audio manager automatically. Then when I open quicktime I get an error. I know I'm missing something here.

The CoreAudio manager starts up automatically with a 002 whenever you boot a 3rd party application which would normally try and use the CoreAudio drivers for the 002.
What order are you booting the applications? I think if you boot Pro Tools first, then the DAE will take over the FireWire buss, and you won't have this problem. After Pro Tools is already using the 002, then boot QuickTime X, and set your audio preferences.
Let us know if this works.

By the way, the System Settings should be set to the built-in sound card for both input and output. The DAE uses a different audio engine.

There you go... that should work nicely for now!
After you've done a bunch of these, you'll begin to want to make them fancier (screen zooms, highlighting mouse clicks, spotlighting the screen, overlays, transitions, camera integration, etc.) in which case you can start to look into more advanced screen capture software.
My only question is- would you want to have the the voiceover narration have its own track so you can adjust levels independently? For example, what would you do if you did a whole recording, and then went back and decided that you wanted to adjust the level of the talkback mic in relation to the amp?

Yes, being able to adjust levels after would be great. What are your suggestions?
