Ableton Newbie..

Hey guys,

Just got all my gear sorted.. audio interface, monitors ect. Purchased Live 8 yesterday but I'm not quiet sure where to start..

What are some good tutorial websites? Free and paid?

Am I going to need plug in's to start off with? or will Ableton itself be enough to make something with?

Cheers.

Live has some built-in tutorials and the manual is very nice - I haven't really ever watched any external stuff, only looked up certain things (and 90% those usually are in the manual anyway). Live's built-in plugins can take you pretty far, they're very flexible. So basically you've got all you need - start making music!

Sonic Academy as previously mentioned if you're into electronic styles, Groove 3 or Mac Pro Video for more generic ones, are the usual suspects.

Did you get Live "Suite" or? With the instruments and extras Live most definitely has more than enough to make any style of music you're into. I would suggest learning the basic ins and outs of Live first, figure out your workflow and settings before getting into other plugs and hardware. I've been using Live for many years and honestly learn something new about it almost every week or so... its really an amazing DAW.

As for the videos. Obviously Ableton would be the place to start for basics and then try Youtube etc. if that aint working, then consider buying a course or two from the schools. Try not to get stuck on one "this is how we do it" technique though, because the more you mess around on your own with it, the more you'll develop your own tweaks and style. Live is capabale of anything and everything. Good luck!

I just got the standard edition.

Yeah, I've noticed.. So much to learn, pretty cool working with the program and finding new things as you go on.

You only have 2 instrument's, limited number of tracks, scenes and devices, but the good thing is you got almost all effects and for shure important effects like filter/ 8band eq(also Mid/side eq), delay, compressor and reverb.

You must be confusing the standard edition with Live Intro. The standard Live 8 is functionally exactly the same as Suite (ie. no track/scene/device limitations), Suite just adds some instruments, effects and sample content.

I have loads of free tutorials and resources for beginner-intermediate level Live users, that's what my site is primarily about.

My number 1 tip for noobs - Info View! Keep it open, hover over things, and see what it says. You can even write your own notes in it!

You can learn half of Live just by reading it.

Not sure what genre you intend on making but some really good tips for electronic music can be found YouTube! Search for illgates, Tom cosm and Dj vespers. I am on logic and wish I had learnt on ableton. Good luck!
