this is not a summing thread

At least I don't think it's about summing, probably more about hardware inserts, but I'm new to analog gear but I'll give it a shot anyway.

Currently I track with an Apogee Duet 2. Love it, simple and effective, and I rarely need more than 2 I/O. I will be upgrading my interface soon tho because I'd like digital I/O (I'll be buying either a Kemper or Axe FX II and would prefer SPDIF).

I also plan on buying a pre... not because the Apogee's are bad, but because I'd like another 'color'. I thought choosing something like a BAE 1073MP or a Chandler Germanium might be a good way to liven and thicken up my guitars and bass. I've also considered a pre along the lines of Vintech.

Then I got thinking (dangerous) -- I do quite a bit with soft synths, mostly omnisphere and Absynth... it might be nice to occasionally send those out to the pre and back in for girth, or flavor or grit or what have you. Same with the drums (mostly done in SSD4).

A single channel for the bass or guitar isn't and issue since I don't track them in stereo. But if I'm sending out a synth's stereo signal into a single channel pre, I'm starting to see a problem.

A really good single channel pre at $1000-$1300 is at the absolute wall of my budget; spending $1800+ on a dual channel is definitely outside my budget.

Am I right to assume that sending a stereo out into a single channel pre is out of the question (I know, this seems so basic). Am I missing something? Am I spot on?

What caused my initial confusion was this line from BAE's info page on their 1073MP:

"There is also a line input feature for adding depth to 2-bus mixes..."

If you really wanted you could pass each channel at a time, just make shure delay compensation and stuff like that doesnt make for timing/phase difference between LR. (of course you wouldn't be able to do this while playing)

I had considered that, then wondered how feasible it would be. Thanks for raising the phasing issue, as I hadn't considered that.
