Question on audio interfaces, please help!

Hey Ladies and Gentlemen,

This is my first post on Gearslutz, so first off thanks for having me.

I am trying to set up a home recording studio primarily for voice over work as well as ADR for film. I also am relatively clueless when it comes to audio gear, so I was hoping you guys could help me out.

The mic I'll be using is a Sennheiser MKH 416, and I will be purchasing either a Macbook Pro or an iMac. The only part of the equation that I have no idea on is everything between those two objects.

I also own a used (but in good condition) Shure FP42 mixer which I purchased for use on film shoots to run the 416 and two lav mics into a Zoom H4n. I don't know if this would be useful for my set up, or if it would just be unnecessary.

I'm looking to spend $300-$500. Would this be enough to fully utilize the capabilities of the 416?

Thank you so much! Sorry if this is a bit of an open-ended question, I know very little in this area and I truly appreciate any amount of help and/or insight on this!

Since it's just voice over work I'm assuming you'd only be recording one mic at a time? Therefore you need one mic pre and then some way of getting that signal into the computer. Since you are getting a mac that will most likely be firewire I'd assume. Your mic pre is where your sound quality will mostly come from. You have two options. Most interfaces have mic pres built in, you can use this pre and it will sound anywhere from not terrible to decent depending on the quality and price. But generally an outboard preamp is going to sound better. So you can then get a single channel preamp and connect that to a single channel firewire interface. I can't really make any recommendations on specific preamps or single channel interfaces though.
